Keppinger traded to SF

Jeff Keppinger has been traded to the San Francisco Giants for right handed pitchers Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel. Angel Sanchez to start tonight at 2nd in place of Jeff Keppinger. Altuve is due into Houston sometime later this evening. It's finally happened and the Mighty Mouse will be making his pro debut soon for the Astros. It only took our front office long enough to promote one of the two best hitters in its system to big league club.

alysonfooter The Astros traded Jeff Keppinger to the Giants for RHPs Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel. Jose Altuve called up. And away we go...

Trading a utility IF for two pitchers

is not a bad thing.

You really think Keppinger was going to bring back a A prospect?

by Neil Leininger on Jul 19, 2011 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Not an A prospect but a B- one.. yeah.

I wish Wade wouldve held out more. He LOVES his freaking Relief Pitchers and it really does nothing to help this crappy team.

Shitty trade Wade. Shitty trade.

Indians got CARLOS SANTANA for Casey Blake from LA

I should expect a high upside pitcher or position player for a player very similar (better) than Blake form a GM that isnt an idiot.

Well, we’re not trading with Ned Colletti. It’s too bad that the Dodgers aren’t buyers this time, because I would like to have seen the Astros make some trades with him.

by clack on Jul 20, 2011 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Saw that and my first thought is...WTF

Did we really just trade one of our more valuable trade pieces for a long shot (Stoffel) and a never will be (Sosa)?

Starting with Stoffel, he was the 4th round pick for SF in the 2009 draft.

Pros: Good K/BB rate, good HR rate, is still relatively young at 22.

Cons: Probably not the highest ceiling and 9.1 H/9 seems high.

As for Sosa, jeez…this guy has horrible numbers (a 2.400 WHiP this season!), a walk rate that has skyrocketed (although he still strikes out guys at a decent clip), and he also turns 26 in a week and a half. In other words, he’s a throw in so Ed Wade can say “Hey Drayton, I got two players for Keppinger just like you asked!”.

by ToyCannon on Jul 19, 2011 5:36 PM CDT reply actions

This is why you call him up

There is no pressure on Altuve to perform with the playoffs on the line. If he struggles you can always send him to AAA. There is no down side to letting Altuve play 2nd for the Astros, instead of moving him to AAA.

by Neil Leininger on Jul 19, 2011 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm generally with not rushing guys but it's not like Andersen Hernandez or anyone else in

this system is lighting it up at 2nd base. So why not bring him up? Besides you know Angel will get his fair share of playing being a more verterany player now for Mills.

by StrosSouth on Jul 19, 2011 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

This is what John Sickels had on Stoffel on his 2010 SF Top 20 Prospects List prior to last season

9) Jason Stoffel, RHP, Grade B-: 5.01 ERA, 55/16 K/BB in 41 innings for High-A San Jose, 43 hits, 1.48 GO/AO, 21 saves. I think he has the potential to improve a lot next year.

I think the Oswalt trade was pretty fair

Amusingly, it might be looking better right now if we had held onto Gose instead of flipping him for Wallace (a move most of us liked at the time). Gose has advanced himself to top 100 status I think. Villar was borderline and scouts are apparently still gushing over his tools.

Lets not forget that he is not a great fielder, he does not take walks and he is on most playoff teams a very good bench bat/Utility guy.

Lets not expect the world for a guy that will be back om the bench when the Giants regular SS and 2B come back healthy…

Stoffel is the centerpiece

I think Sosa is mostly just a throw-in.

One B- prospect and an organizational arm sounds about right for Kepp. I just wish the B- prospect was anything other than a relief pitcher

by OremLK on Jul 19, 2011 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Stoffel isn’t a B- prospect. If he were, I’d be better with it. He wasn’t a top 20 in their system going into this season. C+ guy

Firesale! Everyone must go!

by astrosfan1989 on Jul 19, 2011 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Stoffel is not, I repeat not, a B- prospect.

He was last year. This year he has dropped out of the Giants top 20 (Sickels) into the marginal C category. You can try and spin it anyway you want – we got screwed. Now watch next year we he goes into free agency and the Giants get a late first round and a supplemental pick for him.

by kdm59 on Jul 19, 2011 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions

That was before this season

I would argue that he’s advanced himself back into, at least, strong C+ range by performing decently well at AA ball this year. Really I would have expected a strong C+, weak B- for Kepp. Kepp’s perceived value is low. It’s not like Pence where everyone knows he’s going to require a huge haul to pry away. Teams view Keppinger as a bench player.

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Jul 19, 2011 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I tend to agree that that is how they view him.

But if that is the case, take a gamble on his free agency return.

by kdm59 on Jul 19, 2011 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Well if the giants get into the playoffs, and they offer Keppinger arbitration my bets are he will except it and they won’t get that supplemental round pick for him.

I have to say

We got Kepp and only gave up Drew Sutton who was also not a top 20 Astros prospect at the time. But we got Kepp for several cheap years when his value was a little higher than it is now. AND some people thought we gave up too much. I don’t think we needed to do this deal, and seeing Altuve up right now is downright horrific in my view, but the value for Kepp is almost non-existent.

I would say at minimum Pedroia at best Joe Morgan. lol Seriously though, this kid has what

every big leaguer should have, heart and hustle. Reminds me of Pete Rose in that regards. Hits the ball pretty damn hard and has deceptive speed and power. As far as his fielding he has better than average range and a good arm and can play 3rd if needed.

I think his realistic ceiling

Is a bit higher than Eckstein, because he has more raw power than Eckstein ever did. But realistically, yeah, probably closer to Eckstein than Pedroia.

Maybe something like Howie Kendrick as a more realistic best case outcome.

This an UBER AGGRESSIVE by the FO. And I love it. Altuve is just 21, but he has shown the ability to dominate. I think in 2 years time he will be as good if not better than Pedroia. We’re talking a franchise 2B staple. But, I do expect him to go through some rough patches.

I also think this sends a loud message to the George Springer’s and other high draftees and IFA’s that we will promote very aggressively if you earn it.

I’m perfectly fine with the deal. One of the guys could make the bigs and produce for a few years and the other is just an organizational filler. Kepp wasn’t gonna help Houston for much longer or help us make the playoffs or anything so no biggie. Besides like someone said Kepp is someone who is a role player. It’d make no sense to trade away a significant prospect or player for a rental role player. I’m stoked but scared that Altuve was called up. I am having visions of JR Towles entering my head and I don’t like it at all. Both started in A ball and ended up in the majors at the end of the year. This scares me but Tiny could do it

“Over the last four years we’ve talked about creating an express lane in

"We saw Jason Castro do it coming out of college and being in the big leagues in June of 2010. And we’ve seen Jordan Lyles’ ascent to the big leagues this year in the same fashion and we think Jose is made the same way."

On Sosa & Stoffel

Sosa has been a starter his entire minor league career until his early season promotion to AAA this year when was converted to relief. His number at AA as a starter have been excellent – an FIP in the 2.00’s, high K’s and low BB’s. However as a starter and reliever in AAA his FIP is just under 6.00, not very good.

Stoffel has only made it up to AA and over his minor league career he has never had a FIP over 4.00. 25 saves in 2010 (A+) and 13 so far this season (AA). High K/9, average BB/9 around 4.5.

Unfortunately, pitch analysis data isn’t readily available for minor league players.

by super_shredder on Jul 20, 2011 9:38 AM CDT reply actions

In the end, I think Houston got a decent setup man and a spot starter/long relief guy for Keppinger. The ceiling would be a #3 starter and a closer. The floor would be 2 fringe relievers. When I look at it like that, it’s not a bad return. I was just hoping for more highly touted prospects.

by Snake Diggity on Jul 20, 2011 10:36 AM CDT reply actions

In the end, I think the weak trade return for Keppinger is due to the fact that teams are unwilling to view him as a full time starter. Keppinger’s lack of power and mediocre defense puts him in the utility infielder category in the eyes of most teams. The difference is important in terms of trade value. The Giants sent a Top 50 prospect (a former first round draft choice) to the Pirates in order to acquire Freddy Sanchez (an injured second baseman whom Keppinger will back up). The Brewers sent a return similar to the Keppinger trade when they acquired Felipe Lopez from the D-Backs in 2009. (The Brewers sent a C type minor league pitcher plus a non-prospect minor league outfielder.) Lopez, like Keppinger, was having a good offensive season at the time, but was viewed as a utility infielder / part time player.

by clack on Jul 20, 2011 11:49 AM CDT reply actions

This is how Im seeing this trade too. Keppinger was a bright spot on this dreadful team. I

think that is why most fans here are upset that we didnt get more in return for him. With Sosa I’m hoping that pitching coach extraordinaire, Burt Hooten will be able to correct what ever it is that has bothered him the past two seasons. If he is able to do so this kid could be a steal as he has a mid 90’s FB which is something this starting rotation could use more of. With Stoffel he’s still young enough that there is time for him to get back on track also.
