Astros Minor League Recap: POTW

It's Sunday so you know what that means!  Players of the Week!

Hitter of the Week: David Flores

I prefer giving this award to the real prospects but he had a very nice week.  JD Martinez would have been my other choice with his ridiculous walk total for the past week.  But, Flores was the most exciting player at the plate for Lancaster this week with his four home runs (three in one game).  He collected twelve hits, four of those falling for doubles as well, and two walks while striking out just twice.

Pitcher of the Week: Jonas Dufek

I also thought about giving it to Folty given his struggles for the season and then breaking out a nine strikeout performance, but it doesn't top twelve shutout innings from Dufek.  Dufek allowed just six hits and walked two while sitting down seven on strikes.  He has allowed nine runs on the season and those were in two starts while his other four have been shutouts.  He's been a nice surprise in Tri-City this season but he's going to have to strikeout a few more guys if he's going to make it as a starter.

Nice to see Javaris Reynolds with a multi-hit game.

He’s one of my favorite prospects.

He’s only 18, and his walk to strikeout ratio this year (so far) is very good: 11-15.

He’s also 7-10 in stolen bases.

If he can just continue to make good contact, his average should go up.

I still can’t believe we got him in the 7th round of the draft. He’s got a lot of upside for a 7th rounder.

I think .178/.341/.192 is one of the strangest batting lines I’ve seen.

its a real head scratcher!

Same thing I was thinking.

The biggest thing for me is his great patience and maturity at the plate when he’s only 18.

Yeah

I put a lot more weight on the BB/K numbers at this point, like you said. I just thought that batting line was very unusual-looking.

2012 Draft

I know everyone is enamored with Nick Williams…but let me introduce you to Trey Williams!

Thick athletic build, very strong legs. Arm and range for 3B. Has a prototype frame.

Capable of 35 HR power while hitting .300! He is mature at the plate and has a good eye. He’s not just tools, he actually has skills. I’m just saying, we have a lot of OFers and no real 3B prospects. I know you don’t draft on need in baseball, but I love this guy!

I’m not big on scout.com but it was first actual written report I found on a quick search. I’ve been looking at video at him mostly.

Ive been eyeing him too.

We definitely need a power hitting 3B and he definitely fits the bill.

by YohannDookeyblue on Jul 17, 2011 11:25 AM CDT reply actions

with his eye and maturity and build, he’s not a guy you have to wait to develop a long time either. He could have a college athlete type ascent through the system. I love this guy.

Dont know how much stock you put into John Heyman

But hes reporting new owner wants payroll down to 60 mill

Hmmm… I say trade Pence. You’ll get as good as an offer as youre likely to get.

Looks like Lancaster didnt learn from Greenvilles mistake

I didn't forget

Great first inning – Barmes ended it defensibvely with a webgem.

Keppinger and Pence combined to score in the bottomof the first.

Meanwhile I was railing against Brocail for ordering Wandy to IBB the eighth man in the line up to get to the pitcher. Bad things happen if a picther stays in after an IBB . It throws them off their game. Sure enough after 2-1 count the Pitcher doubled home two runs.

I then took off to watch the first half the World Cup .

When I returned I see Keppinger continued his great game with a 2-run homerun to tie the game .

Game on?

In Houston? I didn’t know they still had a team!

"Hats for bats, keep bats warm."

by El Speverino on Jul 17, 2011 2:47 PM CDT reply actions

We hear some things from Peter Gammons today

One GM told him the Astros are asking as much for Wandy as the Rockies are asking for in exchange for Ubaldo Jimenez. That doesn’t even make sense and I hope Wade isn’t being that difficult to work with—we heard earlier today that the Rockies only have about a 25% chance of actually trading Jimenez so presumably they’re asking for a huge amount.

The Nationals are still after Michael Bourn. Wonder if they’re still laughably lowballing us.

by OremLK on Jul 17, 2011 2:52 PM CDT reply actions

I generally take what Gammons says with a grain of salt; its usually wild speculation. I would expect the Astros to do their due diligence and ask a lot for Wandy, but I doubt they’re being THAT difficult.

I don’t see a match with the Nationals when it comes to Bourn. Most of their notable prospects are either guys that would be too much to give up for Bourn, or too little. There isn’t much in between. I would ask for Brad Peacock in a deal.

You mentioned the Nationals giving lowball offers for Bourn in the past; do you happen to know what they might have offered before?

by Stupendous Man on Jul 17, 2011 3:43 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

If I remember right there was some rumor floating around they were trying to pawn Pudge off on us in exchange for Bourn.

So if the Astros only go after four more draftees, and assuming they sign 3 out of the 4, how did this draft fair in numbers? Did we sign more than usual, less?

I’m hoping that all the guys that signed quickly will see it pay off next season and we can point to that next year when drafting guys and hopefully get more quick signings

Lucas Harrell

I know that there hasn’t been much desire to watch OKC on milb.tv with much of the focus on Corpus, but I watched the game today, and it was a good game beside a rough outing from Fernando Abad.

The guy I wanted to talk about was Lucas Harrell. As far as I know this was his first outing since joining the Astros organization and he did not disappoint. He only went five innings but did not give up a run. He was a little wild at times and seemed to rely heavily on his fastball but overall this was a good outing. I was impressed and will watch as many of his starts as I can. Maybe he could be an in-house innings eater if Wade went crazy and started trading starting pitching.

J.D. getting back to his career norm .340 batting average

I s’pose that hammy injury caused him to hover around .310 and singles hitter.

Lol, I love J.D. Martinez!!!

He's 1-19 in CS attempts at CC this year

He was good at lower levels throwing out baserunners. I don’t know if I should look so much into it yet, but it’s somewhat concerning.

its probably the fact that everyone in AA has a better idea and there baserunning is alot more polished for most players

Or its bad luck

If i were Arnold Rothstein id pay Ryan Braun all the money he
wants to stop going on homer streaks against the poor Astros....

am i the only one?
