First, an update on the voting for the Astros' first base prospects. As of 8:15 am central time on Friday, Telvin Nash has 35 votes, Kody Hinze has 31, Chase Davidson has 11, Koby Clemens has 3, and "other" has 1. It is a close race. The poll remains open until Saturday evening - 10 PM central time.
Now onto second basemen. The Astros have some good 2nd basemen throughout the system, but I think that three stand out above the rest:
Jimmy Paredes (22): After skipping high A ball, Paredes has 9 HR, 26 SB, and a .755 OPS in the AA Texas League. He has made 16 errors, playing mostly second base but some 3B as well since Altuve arrived in Corpus.
Jose Altuve (21): He received a mid-season promotion and has turned in a 4 HR, 5 SB, .942 OPS at AA Corpus, with 3 errors, after 5 HR, 19 SB, a 1.057 OPS, and 5 errors at high A, offense-skewed Lancaster. He currently leads the minors in batting average and hits. Yes, he is short (5'6'' - give or take an inch).
Delino DeShields, Jr. (18): In his first full year in the minors, DDJ has 6 HR, 20 SB, and a .615 OPS. He has made 13 errors as the Lexington Legends' (nearly) every day 2nd baseman.
Other possibilities: Enrique Hernandez (19) - very little time at 2B this year, Jean Batista (19) - I think I'll include him among the 3B options, since he has had some time there, and the competition is not as strong, Jose Carlos Thompson (24), Ben Orloff (24), John Hinson (22), Joshua Magee (19). If you choose "other," you might want to mention your choice in the comments.
I may need to include Paredes in the 3B voting as well - feel free to let me know whether I should do this - I have heard a report (Levine) that the experiment at 3B wasn't working out.
Voting for 2B is open until Sunday, 10PM central. Vote after the jump.
