Astros Minor League Open Thread

Oklahoma City is sending Andy Van Hekken to the mound tonight at 7:05 CT.  He has been noticably better this year.

Erik Abreu is pitching for the Hooks tonight.  He should get plenty of run support with this team.

Lancaster is playing at 9:05 CT and the starting pitcher hasn't been announced.

Folty is going for the Legends and has already pitched a scoreless inning.

Nick Tropeano already has two runs of support for Tri-City.

The promising Jamaine Cotton has an early lead for Greeneville.

The Gulf Coast Astros won already and Adrian Houser rocked!  He picked up his first win as well.

DSL Astros are off today.

DDJ led off with a double. Seems like he’s at least getting a few hits lately.

lets go folty!!!!!!!!

If i were Arnold Rothstein id pay Ryan Braun all the money he
wants to stop going on homer streaks against the poor Astros....

am i the only one?

3 K’s through two innings…no walks and two groundouts, I like!

Good deal.Folty needs to just have a dominating outing.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 6:42 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

make it 6. Wild pitch let him get an extra one in the third.

by MadMartygan on Jul 14, 2011 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I was thrilled to check GCL’s site earlier today and see Houser’s line. He may end up ahead of his fellow statesmen and little leaguers (Bundy and Bradley) in terms of development and adjusting to his pro career this year since those two probably wont sign until the last minute. Credit Wade, Heck, and co for getting his deal done quick. He’s my favorite player drafted this year.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 6:48 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Very rough start for Cotton.

4 er in 1.1. Looks like he had some bad defense backing him up.

by MadMartygan on Jul 14, 2011 6:48 PM CDT reply actions

I thought Chris Lee was scheduled to pitch for Greeneville today.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 6:52 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I guess they switched it up, but yeah I had seen that earlier.

by MadMartygan on Jul 14, 2011 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Hopefully he’s not injured.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 6:57 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I really like Cotton. From what I’ve seen, he has a good fastball. Surprisingly, he is still 20

by Subber10 on Jul 14, 2011 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions

He’s one that I don’t know that much about.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 6:58 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Hard throwing pitcher. couldn’t find much else.

by Subber10 on Jul 14, 2011 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

i see altuve has the night off for corpus

goebbert batting 3rd; gaston 5th ahead of wallace to split up righties i presume…not sure i agree with that

by strosfan31 on Jul 14, 2011 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

I’ve been a little down on Folty this year because I was so high on him last year, but as pedestrian as his numbers are, they are not that bad. If he puts up a good second half then he should regain his spot as one of our top prospects in the system.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 6:54 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I think peoples expectations in general were high because his fastball is so much better than Lyles and he dominated the Sally League. But, being a cold-weather pitcher, we shouldn’t expect those type of results til a year or two later. They take longer to develop.

by Subber10 on Jul 14, 2011 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

assuming folty posts a solid second half, do you think they’ll start him at lexington again with a possible mid season call-up to corpus? it seems like the organization wants to avoid sending more highly regarded pitching prospects to lancaster.

by strophi on Jul 14, 2011 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised if he repeats, but I also wouldn’t worry about him in Lancaster either. He has a great groundball rate which will allow him to be successful.

by Subber10 on Jul 14, 2011 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey Subber. I meant to comment earlier about it, but how good do you think Buchanan’s last start really was. You made the comment a while ago about unearned runs, and even though only 1 run was charged to him he still gave up six.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 7:01 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

He had a rough first inning. He should have been out of the first earlier, but he gave up a home run that was unearned, but he still threw out a bad pitch and paid for it. Overall, it was solid, just a bad first inning that was exacerbated by errors.

by Subber10 on Jul 14, 2011 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Gotcha. Good to know.

by orangeblood kid on Jul 14, 2011 7:04 PM CDT reply actions

Folty

So do you think the Astros risk sending Folty to Lancaster, or do they skip a level with him, or does he repeat a level, or does it depend on his second half. If Lancaster is where mechanics are fine-tuned/overhauled, then I have heard that Folty has clean mechanics so that level may not be as important to him.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 7:08 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

He could skip, I doubt he will to start the season, but the main concerns of giving up a ton of HR’s isn’t as sever with him since he is above average at inducing groundballs.

by Subber10 on Jul 14, 2011 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

He is definitely cranking it up. He may force himself into Houston’s plans by sometime next season if he keeps it up.

What’s the story on him.

by conroestro on Jul 14, 2011 7:21 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

25th round draft pick in 2010

Fastball touches 96, sits in low 90’s. One of his coaches said before he was drafted he could have ended up being a first rounder if he had waited a year. His ceiling could be top of the rotation starter if he continues developing his breaking pitches.

Mid 90’s FB, capable of hitting upper 90s. Mechanics are a little violent, and has a feel for off-speed stuff. Has great upside, but likely a bullpen arm at the ML level. Although, I’d like to see him get a shot in the rotation.

by Subber10 on Jul 14, 2011 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Has he pitched for Greenville yet?

Id definitely like to see him in the rotation. We need a few more power arms.

by MadMartygan on Jul 14, 2011 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

So Paredes is having a nice season at CC

and is just 22 years old. Scouting reports I’ve been finding on him are generally dated but have him anywhere from a toolsy utility player to a starting 3rd baseman with power to all fields if he becomes more patient. Surely he’s playing his way into the future plans for the Astros?

by Astrofan on Jul 14, 2011 7:28 PM CDT reply actions

It will be interesting to see how long Parades can ride this hot streak.

the concerning thing about paredes is his walk rate. it has stayed at the same level throughout his minor league career (between 4 and 5%).

Now that we can safely say that JD has recovered from his knee injury he has nothing else to prove in Corpus. Might as well get him to OKC soon.

Anybody else agree that Paredes should be hitting 3rd and Altuve 2nd? ESPECIALLY with Jimmy’s recent power surge

by strosfan31 on Jul 14, 2011 7:54 PM CDT reply actions

It goes back to the argument that about whether your best hitter should hit 2nd or 3rd, personally i feel like a hitter with altuve’s profile should hit 2nd

by PeteyNhtown on Jul 14, 2011 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

True about Altuve over Paredes for the three hole. Parades also has nice speed that would bode well for him at the top of the order.

So

Altuve at 2nd and
Its looking good for Paredes at 3rd.

Not bad. Id even go so far as to say if Paredes continues at this pace or close to it for the rest of the year hes a top 100, maybe top 50 prospect. Thats 2.

Plus JD Martinez.

And I also think that is Chris Wallace were tearing it up like he is in NYY system he would be getting major buzz, and is comparable to Austin Romine.

Pretty sure granger won’t sign. He seems set on community college to get a better draft position. I think it’s biggerthan money. I think he feels insulted by his position in the draft.

He said he sits 90-92, with potential to add more velocity. Also has a power hook that was too much for high school hitters, but his attitude is ridiculous. He apparently tried to dictate who he would pitch against, and regularly cuss out his coaches and on occasion the umpires as well.

Fastball / Slider combo. Probably too old to be tried as a starter though. Would be a nice addition to big league pen sometime in the near future.

If the Astros could show any sign of being ahead, rather than being behind the competition, maybe, just maybe the Astros will be good in the future.... Maybe

Everyone needs to wear those Bagwell style wrist guards.

I guess Bags actually had it on his hand, now that I think about it.

Hinze 2 doubles tonight

Van Ostrand pinch running.
Probably will be O-stranded as TJ Strikeout up to bat.

Hinzes starting to hit in AA

When you ask Carlos Lee what his favorite place to play is, and he anwsers with the words, anywhere with a Buffet. You know theirs a real problem.

he’ll come around soon enough, he’s got a good approach, and has drawn some big walks. In the games i’ve seen him he’s had some long outs too. Won’t be long.

Awesome 6th inning for Lancaster

Wates with a triple and Meyer and Flores with home runs. Flores’ 2nd of the game.

by MadMartygan on Jul 14, 2011 11:31 PM CDT reply actions

Flores is the definition of the Lancaster effect. 1.022 OPS at home .587 on the road.

Those were his first road homers of the year. I think it’s nice to see that Wates doesn’t have outrageous splits. His OBP is actually the same home and away.
