Last place in 2011 is not the end of the world....I've heard that's in 2012....RIGHT!!
We all understand that the Astros are a bad team with bad components from the (Current) owner down to the towel guy, and I'm ok with that. I think we all should be as long as they stay bad in 2011. What we don't need; and I know this sounds insane, is another late season run to get to the middle of our division. It's time for the Astros organization and the fans to accept a last place season. Not just in the Central but in the MLB. This will benefit the organization as a whole. There's no shame in getting the #1 pick in the draft.
Having the first pick does not immediately translate to playoffs. But being able to stock up on top of the draft talent can help a farm system recover quicker than drafting in the middle of the pack each year.
Be bad, stay bad, play the kids from AAA, lose 100 in 2011..........but let's see what can be done to keep this from happening again any time soon.

Agreed
I want that first pick and too see some young triple A guys get an opportunity at the ML level.
If we continue on the pace we've been playing lately...
losing 13 of the last 17 or something …. it won’t matter if we go on a late season run…. we’ll still be the worst team.
There are no “young” triple-a guys that could help with the exception of Brandon Barnes and maybe the bullpen. Barnes hits for power, but cannot hit for average. Maybe Clemens, but he has the same issues as Barnes. Both of these guys would probably be below average right now.

Yea are triple a is trash
The only good thing we had there is already at the Majors ( Lyles )
Carptenter could be a legit pen guy by the end of the year so that is the only other true guy that could make a long term impact at the majors and with our pen now i think its a matter of time before he gets here.
As for the rest of the minors i think once all the all star games are over which i think will be the end of this week i could be wrong tho. there will be alot or at least some movement. I think JD is soon to be on his way to AAA which mean he is going to be the next guy that is right there waiting to move up. Guys like Hinze and maybe even Chris Wallace have been rumored to be making steps up if not jumping levels and i even heard Meir could be headed to Hi A soon.
Next year there will be alot more talent to draw from at AAA with most of the guys from AA moving up. At least 2 pitchers in Keuchel and Cedeno will be at AAA waiting for a chance. Yea they will be 24 and 25 respectivly but its better than the 27 to 30 + year olds we have in that rotation now.
Last but not least the number one pick is gonna be big for us one way or another. I kno it is not any sort of deep draft but that makes that number one pick even bigger because it will prob be more clear on who the best player is. We need that pick and i think we will get it
Firesale! Everyone must go!
I don't disagree...but
I gotta ask you this; WILL there be more talent at AAA. If you tell me that the guys that appear to be ready will be moved up, I agree with you. Since we don’t know how Crane is going to run the show…I just don’t know. The current leadership has miss-managed this organization so badly that I don’t know anymore. They didn’t sign high picks over the past few years and that’s going to hurt. But more important than that is the fact that they leave these kids in A and AA why too long and it hurts their development.
Well this FO has deff not been shy to move guys up fast.
Castro Lyles JD now we get into the Chris Wallace talk and Altuve and Villar all getting pushed aggresivly. I thnk next year you could have at least during the course of the year 4 or 5 guys that are prospects that could be at AAA
JD
Keuchel
Cedeno ( not as much of a prospect but if he does well next year he will get a look)
Altuve
Wates ( could possibly get to AA soon and might impress enough to start at AAA next year )
Hinze ( rate he is hitting if that carries to AA thats a no brainer he will be at AAA next year )
maybe Cwallace? idk
all this is excluding guys in the pen
But like i said thats a jump from having just one legit prospect at your AAA level to at least 5 buy mid season next year that are at your AAA level that could all have a shot at the majors. Not to mention the guys who could be added to AA or AAA this year threw any trade that has yet to come. Things are finally looking up in my thoughts

What?
They’ve probably been pushing kids a little faster than average now. They’ve been signing pretty much all of their top draft picks and the highest pick we didn’t sign was a 3rd rounder we just signed a couple weeks ago. This isn’t the front office that scorched the earth. Having said all that, I’m still pretty ‘meh’ on the whole lot of ’em.
well, i could see the same thing happening in 2012
especially if the front office doesn’t do anything monumentally risky/stupid.
yea but eventually the talent in the minors will grow and get to the ML team

agreed
Despite having some pessimism about Villar and Wikoff, I like our minor league growth, and I think there could be quite a few prospects that emerge as decent, average, or above average regulars in the bigs. And at that point, I’d like to see some big free agents signings to bolster the solid lineup, but I don’t see the practicality in signing any remotely old (like even 28 or 29) to a long term deal at this point. And without a big impact free agent signing or two, or a heck of a lot of luck, we’re in store for another significantly below .500 season in 2012 I think. As you’ve said, 2013 is probably a good target year for a major transition…one where we should probably expect/demand/whatever a .500 type team (assuming neutral luck), and hope for maybe an 86-88 win team with an outside shot at sneaking into the playoffs. I just can’t see a path where the Astros can make the playoffs before 2014 without a tremendous amount of good fortune in one way or the other.

having said that
i’m optimistic in general, and somewhat glad that the team isn’t lucking into more wins than we should be getting, forcing management to stay in denial about the team’s chances in the short term. the simple act of paring down the roster is a good thing IN ITESLF, forgetting the fact that it will bring a few prospects that might be of some use – maybe one or two that is a real impact player, help the team save some money to re-invest in some way, help the team get higher draft picks which may turn into huge impact player, give some borderline prospect types a chance to prove themselves as useful contributors at the major league level, and lower fan expectations to that point that we can start rooting for the future and for an underdog that should continue to make forward strides instead of a mish-mash of well-below average veterans that are on the downswing of their careers, that might fool enough of us into believing they’ll all have career years and allow us to play close to .500 ball. rebuilding is W-W-W-W-W.

I agree with alot of what you said
next year could be just as bad but you are missing one key element to that which is even the same team could arguably be better next year on a few fronts. For starters i think we can all agree our biggest prob this year is the Pen. It is a very young and raw group of guys and with the addition of carpenter at some point will only get better next year. I dont see how they could take a step back. 2 you have a more experenced bret wallace and yea if Hinze turns into a legit 24 25 year old prospect by the end of next year than wallace might also be fighting to keep his job.
Another huge diff to next year is a bad team next year could be more fun to watch just based on the fact that if recent minor league showings continue guys like JD and Altuve might force their promotions either at the start or soon after next year. Yes it is super exciting to watch Lyles pitch because we all love that we finaly have a young guy on this team that we love but that is every 5th day. If JD and or Altuve make it to the Majors next year ( lets face it both could fall flat on their face before they get the chance ) thats guys you get to see day in and day out so even loosing your getting to see a better future than some of the AAAA guys that take the field now.

Well
The same team could be a little better next year – that is true. But if we do commit to a rebuild, Bourn, Wandy, and Pence might all be gone, so the strides the bullpen and some positional players might make is unlikely to add up to a significant amount more value than the loss of those 3 (plus others maybe).

I don’t really agree that the bullpen is our biggest problem. That’s an easy thing to fix, as relievers are kinda up and down and people emerge, people fall off a cliff, and so on. Our biggest problem is that our offense can’t get on base and can’t hit for any kind of power. That is not an easy thing to fix.
No doubt, but I think it’s easier to fix a bullpen. Look at what Tampa Bay did. They lost their entire bullpen, picked up a bunch of draft picks and then just patched it back together. Getting good everday players is pretty difficult and expensive.
Both can be expensive in the end. Our BP is rather young and
inexperienced. I would think this year of experience and maybe a healthy Lyon and maybe another vet in there might help next season. Man do we need Arias back and healthy.
Texas Rangers
have gotten back to prominence drafting in the middle of the pack.
