Greedy Woman Steals Ball From Little Girl " CBS Houston
This is unbelievable. During a recent game between the Astros and Diamondbacks at Minute Maid Park, an unknown was woman caught on camera taking a ball from a sweet little girl. I had this happen to me when I was younger. A ball player threw me a ball it bounced just out of my reach and landed behind me some lady snatched it up. This brought back those painful memories.

I'm happy to hear
That wade is smitten with Altuve as well. Now if they could just promote hinze and Villar could figure out any way get on base we’d be in good shape. I wish we could find a solid third base prospect to target but after sorting through prospect list it doesn’t seem like there are many out there on teams that may want one of our trade chips. So I assume any package for our vets will be centered on starting pitching prospects…which is good. Maybe we can find an offensive SS that can move to third.
As far as sending a team to the AL west, everyone says Astros but the diamondbacks or Rockies could go over just as well and then the Astros could move to the NL west. I know some of you have mentioned it before. I like the NL better since they play real baseball there but I don’t care too much. The DH sucks but it would be cool to play the Yankees and red sox every year. I don’t think rivalries matter much. With time new teams will piss us off. I already don’t like the mariners and the As are pushovers since the rest of baseball has figured what they were up to.

Oh
And I’m really looking forward to following Greenville since they have Ovando and Moon on the roster. Is it likely that Springer will go there as well? it would make checking box scores easier. Like now it’s fantastic that Altuve, JD, Villar and Paredes are all on the same team. If I’m lazy I just have to check one box score to see how most of my favorites are doing.

Good “no doubt” third base prospects always have been hard to find. That’s why Longoria and Zimmerman are worth their weight in gold. For some reason, third basemen seem to have short aging curves, and a lot of them end up with short careers like Ensberg.

I don’t expect a no doubter but would be nice to add 1 or 2 guys that have a solid glove at third and have a chance to contribute anything at all with the bat. I’m starting to wonder if most people view third base incorrectly. Maybe it should be viewed more like SS or even 2B. Everyone wants power at third and if the glove isn’t good enough the player moves to first. I know speed isn’t as valuable there but maybe look for a guy with altuve’s batting profile yet tall enough to snag line drives. I mean, if you only wanted SS with power there would be 2 or 3 SSssses…how do you pluralise that? Maybe in the non steroid era we need to find a different offensive tool to put at third yet still retains defensive value. Cammy was my favorite even premvp I also loved what Spiers brought to the game at third.

Hardball Times had an article several years ago on the evolution of the 3d base position. Up until the 40’s, third base was primarily a defensive position, with fast athletic players who were more like the shortstops of today. Bunts were a bigger part of offensive strategy and teams wanted players who could stop the steady stream of bunting.
In another related non sequitor, Fangraphs had an article (Dave Cameron, I think) several years ago questioning baseball teams’ decisions on deciding whether a player is a second baseman or third baseman when they first enter the organization. He believed that teams have a stereotype of second basemen as smaller physical players and would move otherwise good second basemen to third base because they think that they are too tall for second base. Cameron argued that third baseman should have athletic skills similar to a second baseman, and thought that teams could be unnecessarily limiting their WAR by using size criteria to define second and third basemen when they enter the minor leagues. I’m not sure I agree, but it is an interesting notion.

You got me interested in looking for nearly ML-ready third baseman for trading purposes. The Padres and A’s have good third base prospects in the Texas League. The Mariners have a very interesting third base prospect from Italy (Liddi) in AAA. A trade with these organizations doesn’t seem likely, not to mention that the Padres, A’s, and Mariners want to keep their third base prospects.
As I look at it, Paredes may be as good a prospect at third base as we can find.

obviously I am omitting Moustakas from the Royals, by the way, since he has already made to the big leagues.

Paredes is looking more and more viable. The contenders that I found that had young 3rd basemen also need those third basemen this season and beyond. The studs aren’t blocking anyone. And the other teams aren’t looking for veterans. Maybe Paredes can become the Bourn of thirdbase. Anyone know what his arm strength is like? I see the Yankees tried him at SS and 3rd so I assume it’s good enough.
by ntn on Jun 19, 2011 9:52 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
His arm strength for 3B is just fine. Maybe above average but havent been to a
game in person since he was moved over there. Ive only seen him on TV. I believe CCIslander went the other night so mught have better insight then what I do.
That’s a nice story on Astros’ draftee Lee.

Yeah I did like the story on Chris Lee. Also, I liked Astros County’s take on the Segura versus Altuve debate. Seems like alot of people out there are still hesitant to jump on the Altuve bandwagon even though he is having an incredible season.
by conroestro on Jun 19, 2011 11:27 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
If Paredes works out ... Then great!
But I hope they are able to draft Kenny Diekroeger next year. He’s the SS for Stanford but scouts say he will play 3rd in the majors. He had a down year with the bat this year but is still considered a good hitter and apparently is a very bright hi character guy.
Also, if we happen to hire Friedman as our GM…..Friedman drafted Diekroeger in the 2nd round in the ’09 draft so we know he views him highly
