Lance Berkman - Should He Return to Houston? Do You Want Him Back?

It's hard not to notice how incredible Lance Berkman has been this season.  He looks like a new player in St. Louis this season with 15 dingers and an OPS of 1.080.  It's no coincidence he's near the top of NL Ballots as an All-Star starter and is a big reason St. Louis is cruising atop the NL Central standings.

Still, do you think he would come back to Houston next season if Jim Crane fired Ed Wade and begged on hands and knees?  If so, do you even want him to return and possibly finish his career where it all started?

Add me to the camp that wants him back.

Here's a few reasons why I like the idea:

1) It'd be a nice story.  Let's face it:  Berkman is an Astro.  He's a Texan, loves the city of Houston, and is one of the most popular players in the history of the Astros franchise.  Berkman has clearly shown that 2010 was just an abberation and that he can still play.  The Astros really need a #4 hitter and Carlos Lee is not that person.  If he was open to the idea of finishing his career in Houston at, say, 24 million over 2 years, that might be enough to get him back to finish his career here.

2) Chris Johnson = Morgan Ensberg 2.0?  In other words, a guy who has the tools to be a good player, but for whatever reason, cannot seem to do so on a consistent basis.  If Berkman returns at 1B, Johnson is the odd man out on the Astros infield.  He'd provide nice depth at AAA, or might even make an intriguing trade candidate, but I don't think he's going to be an answer in the long term.  If there's one thing 2011 has shown us, it's that Chris Johnson's 2010 was a fluke and that he's a replacement level player--at best.

3) Brett Wallace isn't hitting for a lot of power, but he's proven he can be an everyday player.  Neither Wallace nor Johnson will be great defensively at 3B, but Wallace was also groomed to play 3B throughout much of his time in the minors and strikes me as someone with a much higher ceiling than Johnson will have.

4) Albert Pujols and free agency.  If you're the Cardinals, you simply cannot afford to let arguably the greatest player in the history of your franchise leave via free agency.  They will need every last free agent dollar to get him re-signed after the 2011 season which means there's probably a good chance Lance Berkman isn't retained.

Even though he didn't leave on the best of terms, there's certainly a possibility Berkman could always return at the end of this season.  I don't think this move makes the Astros a substantialy better team, but it does make them better for 2012 and helps to solve the revolving door at 3B.  Additionally, Berkman gets to finish his career with the team he's most associated.

Meh

Crane could probably win some sentiment from the fans by releasing Carlos Lee and bringing back Berkman to play left field for the last year or two of the Puma’s career, but I don’t know that it would actually be the best move for the franchise. I don’t think it would be horrible, I just question what its purpose would be.

Berkman

1) Berkman tried to come back in the offseason but ownership said no due to all spots being taken up. I would love him back but we cant with el buffalo and his bloated contract grazing in LF and the young wallace at 1B. Like OremLK said its probably not best for berkman to come back due to younger players getting close. I would love Lee to go away and bring Berkman in for a year to man LF but whose to say he has the same kind of year like 2011.
2)Its too early to write off Johnson, no one expects him to hit .300 again but they do expect .270 – .280 from him which hes not far from last i saw he was at .230 and it was climbing due to him starting to hit to RF which is what hes best at. Ensberg got power happy and started trying to pull everything which is why he fell off the earth. If by the end of the year hes still hitting in the low .200’s then maybe theres a red flag thrown but for now we need to stick with him, or would you like pedro feliz back, because we have no young 3B close in the minors.
3) yes i have also noticed wallace’s power numbers or lack thereof, but he still a kid its his first full season and power usually develops later. My concern is him chasing balls in the dirt and not being able to turn on the inside pitch. Everyone pitches him in and when they miss he makes them pay (with singles), but when they do make their pitch he looks like hes lost at the plate.

also Berkman would only want 5 – 8 million a year because of our hometown discount as he stated last year, Berkman is not the player who chases money.

Chris Johnson is far from anything Morgan Ensberg was

The only problem with signing Berkman is that he’s not going to produce anything close to what he’s produced this year. Let’s not forget he’s 35 this year and will be 36 next year, he’s in the twilight of his career and it looks like this year will be his one good year for this part of his career.

I Love Lancey, but

any Million that we spend on him which could be spent on the next Ariel Ovando is counter-productive to player development in the farm system. Even if he does keep on hitting like he is this year, it would be money wasted since we won’t be heading toward a world series title anytime soon.

A rose with no fragrance is like a baseball player with no average. *cough* Joe Inglett...

Delusional Post

Berkman’s on a team competing to win a world series. If he REALLY wanted to come to Houston b/c he likes it and he’s a Houstonian I wouldn’t want him on the team. I would want a winner that isn’t comfortable with losing.

Huh?

You wouldn’t want him because he likes it here?

Berkman has been a winner his whole career. The guy is going to be a borderline HOFer—what’s “losing” about that? It’s not his fault if the GM/owner can’t build a winning team around him.

Really, the only thing you can fault Berkman on are his injuries, but I think it’s delusional of you to say that Berkman is “comfortable with losing”.

On these two conditions...

1. He stays in shape, like he finally decided to do for St. Louis.

2. Carlos Lee is traded; there’s no way Wallace should be sent to the minors or benched (he is not a 3B).

Agree

About number one and part of number two. If Lee hits, and likely only if he hits next year, no one would really take him without the new owner eating a great deal, likely majority if his contract. Also, unless he is hot with average and power, I just do not see there being a huge traders market for him this year, I’m sure there is a few other teams with some better trade options, including the ability to run or play defense. Definitely agree on Wallace man, I’ve liked that cat since they got him. His struggle last season was because he finally made it and he seemed like someone that would have plate discipline, something sorely lacking on recent Astros teams.

Lance and Roy

I still think there is enough free agent depth coming this off season to reasonably remake the team in to a potential contender, and these two could be a part of that, preferably both. Roy is having a great year too, and if these guys are healthy at the end of the season and leading up to the next, get them. Them and someone to play third base and, I would even look for second impact bat for the infield or outfield. Bench Lee, and have Berkman split time at left and first but only to give Wallace a day off or have Wallace make a handful of starts at third to break the third baseman, that kind of thing. Of course they would need a second reliable and good starter along with some bullpen pieces but again, there should be many arms and bats available after this season. My thing with keeping Lee around as a bench player is I want a guy that can come in as a pinch hitter that has power that makes the pitcher work more, at least when he doesn’t ground out on the first pitch. I think being a more situational hitter would force Lee to use more discipline at the plate, at least one would hope. Same could be said of Berkman to an extent if used slightly more as a bench guy to keep him in better playing shape longer. There will need to be progressive and solid free agent moves the next two seasons along with other things for the Astros to either one, be competitive or two, building for a run in 2013 or 14. I don’t think they need to wait that long. Houston is a good baseball town and if the new owner bolstered the payroll and turned loose on some quality players they could put it together. Think of Bud Norris being your number three starter behind two really good pitchers and Myers and Wandy filling out the back. The Cardinals are going to hurt if they sign Pujols because he will be eating money, they have four impact players that are or could become free agents next year, Carpenter, Wainwright, Molina, and Berkman, that are not named Pujols. Matt Holliday’s signing was a bugger as far as timing with Pujols coming off the books unless they planned to keep both and build around them down the road, the uh, road that ends in the fall. Good post ToyCannon.

Seriously? An $18 million pinch hitter/platoon player? And then sign one of the Cards' ageing players?

Save the money and play the younger guys. This team needs to use its money in a better manner such as signing and developing better talent through the draft and IFA. Signing guys to win like the ones you mentioned is what got us into this predicament along with piss poor FA signings and trades.

Can someone please explain to me?

Why so many people on here seem to be so down about Berkman? I think it’s really a shame that we traded him in the first place. The only thing that made me happy about trading him was maybe he could be on a team that might go somewhere this season. Every time the Cards come to Houston (or we go there) I giggle about him hitting HR off of our pitching in almost every game…I know he’s in the latter part of his career, but come on, he’s still good!

PS: Y’all calling Carlos Lee “El Buffalo” cracks me and my Dad up…XD
