Fire Brad Mills now!

Once again the Astros snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by blowing a 6 run lead at home. A big reason for this is Brad Millsnot making moves when he has a chance and making foolish moves late in games when he should stand pat. It was obvious that Brett Meyers was struggling in the 5th yet he got through only allowing 2 runs. Brad Mills has the opportunity to get him out of the game but instead leaves him in to allow 2 more runs. This insistence of Mills to leave pitchers in, use the same pitchers in later innings regardless of the situation and not making defensive substitutions late in games (ie Carlos Lee to the hot dog stand where he excels) is exactly why he should be fired. I had hoped that when Brad Mills came to the Astros we had a "thinking" manager. But instead we got a young Jimy Williams.

Mr. Crane!!!.....How many games will you allow him to miss-manage before you show him the door?? I hope not many and I truly hope he is your first termination as owner.

I didnt get to watch the game so i dont know how he looked before the second HR but

Honestly with our our mid relief guys are in the pen who do you truly feel best with in that situation so early in the game. Other things i can agree on but sometimes you have to show some faith in your starter especially when its still pretty early and up until then it was his best game in awhile i feel like.

Idk i have liked him as a mang. but maybe thats just me

I want to like Mills.......

But I can’t sit idly by and watch him mis manage this team. No, it doesn’t have top talent and no, it doesn not have a good bullpen. With that said, why doesn he keep bringing in the same guys, in the same situation to fail each time. Just because you say this is my set up man doesn’t mean you have to go him every 8th inning unless he absolutely a lock. We don’t have that. I understand that talent is a luxury Mills doesn’t have. To me that’s all the more reason to shake things up and use guys in different situation tyo see what to actually have.

Last thing; if he sits Wallace again against a lefty I think I’m going to throw up. He’s proven he can hit lefties so stop the foolishness.

Are we really going down this route again?

Here’s a couple of things that are bigger problems for the Astros than Brad Mills:

1) An inconsistent #1 starter (Myers).
2) A young bullpen (Escalona is good in limited doses, Melancon can be effective if not used too often).
3) Carlos Lee.
4) Bill Hall’s loss of power (seriously, what happened?)

I disagree. I think Brad Mills is a good manager, particularly when the job is making chicken salad out of chicken sXXt. The manager’s influence on a team is probably 90% in the clubhouse and off-field communications and 10% making moves on the field. Before the fact, you can make reasonable arguments for just about every possible in-game move like pitching and pinch hitting decisions, but after the fact, if the moves are unsuccessful, everybody jumps on the manager, even though the best moves can turn out badly. If you are a manager who has a deeply flawed team like the Astros, the second guessing will build up because every in-game option has a high probability of failure. In the case of Myers, I fully understand why Mills wanted to ride him for another inning—-it’s the bullpen and the fact that every additional inning pitched by the bullpen risks a full fledge melt down. Fans who haven’t noticed that haven’t been paying attention. Even after Myers was removed, Mills attempted to avoid the middle relievers by bringing in Lopez earlier than normal. But Lopez wasn’t the answer. Outside of Melancon, this team doesn’t have any trustworthy relievers.

Mills lacks strategy and most of all this is an undisciplined team

I agree with you Clack about the management on and off the field but this team has to many base running mistakes. We have way way way to many base running mistakes and that is on the manager when it continually happens again and again. They have to many mistakes at the plate, in the field as far as not knowing were the ball should go when it is hit. Lopez had no play at the plate last night that ball should have went to first that is the high percentage play. How many time’s this season have we seen two walks in a row and next batter swings at the first pitch. That is on the manager. I dont have a problem leaving Myers in last night for the 6th and Mills had him on a short leash I thought. Sending Bogey down Mills should have fought that tooth and nail.

Mills is a pretty bad a manager.

He has 1 guy in his bullpen that was called up 10 days ago from OKC, and he hasn’t used him once.

Mills will be gone within 1 year after Crane takes over.

by Neil Leininger on May 28, 2011 11:22 AM CDT reply actions

Would you bring Fernando Rodriguez into a critical situation? I know, I wouldn’t. And if Mills did, everybody would say that was a terrible move after it blows up in the Astros’ face. F-Rod is unlucky to the extent that the team has played close games and hasn’t had blow out type situations to bring him in. F-Rod is a 27 year old Quad-A relief pitcher; you wait to ease him into a low leverage situation.

by clack on May 28, 2011 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Dont care about the bullpen guy but I dont think Crane is going to stick with Mills next year. I personally dont think the team looks sharp on a daily basis and some of his moves or lack there of just dont make sense.

by Nado2036 on May 28, 2011 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.

This team sucks. There’s no way around that.

By Sharp I mean they dont play good fundamental baseball

Even bad players can play fundamental baseball. They dont know where the ball is going when hit and hitters make no adjustments at the plate. Also playing fundamental baseball is a philosophy and I dont see that with this team. I am for giving Mills another years but if stros keep losing these close games jnto the begining of next year he will be gone.

Joe Torre is a bad example he has been below average outside of the Yankees teams and his Dodgers team nutted up on him.

by Nado2036 on Jun 3, 2011 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

That’s why it’s a good example.

by MadMartygan on Jun 4, 2011 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

There are no critical situations when

you are the worst team in the NL.

Besides how do you know what the guy can do if you never use him. Not too mention that Wallace sits in favor of Carloss and Michaels against every lefty. Or the fact that Carloss is still batting 4th when he should be batting 6-8 since he has to play.

by Neil Leininger on May 28, 2011 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

He didn’t sit against Ted Lilly.

by MadMartygan on May 28, 2011 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, if the manager isn’t trying to win games, he should be fired. And if want to win games, you need to use your best pitchers in the highest leverage situations. That’s pretty basic. With a guy like Fernando Rodriguez, you put him in low leverage situations, and if he performs well there, the manager moves him into higher leverage situations.

by clack on May 28, 2011 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

yes, Wallace sits only against certain lefties, either because they are very tough lefties or because Wallace is due for a day off anyway, and he might as well get a day off when a favorable platoon can be arranged. Look—- Mills isn’t doing anything that 95% of the managers in baseball would do on these decisions.

by clack on May 28, 2011 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I was being extremely sarcastic to the call to fire him. The FO is asking him to enter a

Pinto in the Daytona 500. Mills is only able to use the garbage he’s been given. Get him some better talent and Im sure he’d make decisions that looked better.

by StrosSouth on May 28, 2011 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I know you were

I understand about the talent being bad but if you were a new owner taking over a losing team that has been losing for the past 5 years or so what would you do. You would evaluate and you would make moves that would excite fans. One of those moves would most likely getting rid of the manager. It shows that you are trying to make changes and wil buy you a year or two to be competitive. If I was Crane I would get a high energy guy that excites people its not always about reality but the perception that you are making changes.

by Nado2036 on May 28, 2011 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I completely understand what youre saying about perception but I have the feeling

that if Mills is given some talent to work with he will be a good manager. He just doesnt have anything worthwhile to work with except for our commodities.

by StrosSouth on May 28, 2011 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Sarcasm......I recognize that

The sky “fell” 3 years ago. But I believe even with the talent that the Rays have Mills would miss-manage the team.

- He stays with starters far too long.
- He uses BP pitcher in the same roles over and over even when they have consistently failed in those roles.
- He pinch hits in situation where a pinch hitter isn’t remotely justified.
- He’s still playing Lee like an everyday starter instead of getting Bogusevic (we still don’t know what he can do with more AB’s) and Michaels more playing time. Lee should play every 3rd day. He’s WAAAY over the hill and a disaster in the field. Which brings up teh next problem;
- No defensive replacement for Lee late in games. It hasn’t bit us yet but it will.

Those are just a few problem. the biggest concern is that this team isn’t ready to play every day (See Gary Kubiak).

FRICKIN' MILLS!!!!

Mills should have taken Lyles out after 7 VERY successful innings but no….not Mills.
Lyles should have been out after 7..NOT SENT BACK OUT IN THE 8TH!!!! Now Lyles can lose this game. He doesn’t get to leave with a good taste in his first start he gets pulled once he’s in trouble. Lyles should have been watching this game in the 8th.

FRICKIN’ MILLS STRIKES AGAIN!!!!! YOU CAN HAVE THIS PIECE OF CRAP!!!! I’M PAST FED UP WITH HIM!

And if the bullpen blows it for Lyles, you also blame Mills.

The man’s never going to win, in your eyes.
