Astros Minor League Recap
The lone Australian in the system (as far as I know) seems to have figured things out. Ryan Rowland-Smith has now strung three consecutive solid starts together. Hyphen last three starts combine for 19 1/3 innings pitched and has allowed just four earned runs in that span. He has allowed four walks and eighteen hits in that span as well but his seventeen strikeouts over those three games makes all of that look a lot better.
With speculation running around that J.A. Happ could be struggling with injury or needing some time off, Hyphen makes that a little more bearable. Without any other options in AAA, a DL stint for a starter likely meant an early call to the golden arm of Jordan Lyles, and that spells disaster. Could Lyles handle it? Sure! Is he an injury risk? Sure, not as bad as any other pitcher his age because of his clean mechanics and lack of an injury history, but that track record for kids his age in the majors is nasty. So, hopefully Hyphen has this figured out and his name will get the call in the event that any rotation pitcher lands on the DL.

5th Starters
so who all could they bring up before Lyles in case anything happens? Obviously Figueroa might still be an option, Hyphen, Douglas Arguello? Sergio Perez? anyone else?

I’d go Hyphen, Arguello, Perez. Please no more NF.
Are Barnes and Goebbert actual prospects? I’ve liked what I’ve seen from these guys numbers-wise the past few years. Looks like Barnes might be getting his strikeouts under control.

Barnes was drafted in the 6th round in 2005, and has flown under the radar since. He’s a plus athlete with average to plus power, but struck out too much to be considered a real prospect. If he had a lower career strikeout rate and/or could’ve stuck at 2nd base, he’d probably be much more highly thought of. That said, as a 6th rounder out of HS, at some point someone thought highly of him; his offensive #‘s are decent and he’s risen steadily. He turned 25 last week, so I’d say he’s got at least this year and next year to prove himself at AAA and put himself on the map for a big league future. I could easily see him as a reserve outfielder who has plus power, plus corner defense, average speed, and the ability to play 2nd base and 1st base in a pinch.
Goebbert was a 13th round pick in 2009, so he’s only had 1.5 yrs of pro ball before this season. He did really well in A ball (a traditional pitcher’s league) last year, and was doing pretty well in Lancaster before he got called up to AA to replace the injured JD martinez. It remains to be seen if he’ll stick in Corpus after Martinez returns, but he seems to be strictly a LF (not sure why he hasn’t played any CF or RF), which lowers his value some. I would say he profiles as average at every tool. If he can show more power, or improve his on-base skills, he could be an everyday LF prospect. He’s age appropriate at 23, so if he keeps up what he’s doing at the AA level, he’ll jump guys like Gaston and Steele in the pecking order of possible successors to Carlos Lee and/or Hunter Pence.

If I'm a middling outfield prospect in this system.
I’m taking infield practice at 2nd and 3rd base every day.

Manzella with a HR?!! Maybe he’s tapping in to his man power…hhmmm…
Chowning 4IP-8Ks?!!! Nice! I didn’t think he was a strikeout pitcher.
David Carpenter…(no need for explaination)
Honorable mention…Ben Heath, T.J. Steele, Adam Bailey. Still expecting a lot from the A-Balls, expecting a championship.

Andy Van Hekken
you mentioned he was so terrible in the rotation last year, you’re kidding right? he was top five-ten in the league, strike outs, innings pitched, era etc. He and Josh Banks were head and shoulders above the rest of the rotation.
