Another day another Astros loss. Astros 2 Braves 3
Maybe this is how the Astros are supposed to lose.
The last two loses have been with the Astros up by runs and quite frankly they've been exhausting. In this one the Astros lead early thanks to a Matt Downs homerun, he would also tie the game later on a double. The offense just never really showed up though against Atlanta Braves starter Tommy Hanson who went 7 innings, struck out 10, walked 1, while allowing 2 runs in the process.
Brett Myers also only allowed 2 runs in the game, however it could of been worse. In the first two innings of the game Myers loaded the bases, but managed to escape unscathed. He went 6 innings, striking out 6 and walking 1 for the no decision.
As I teased earlier Matt Downs collected the only two runs batted in for the Astros, homering the first time and driving in Carlos Lee the second time, who also had two hits on the day. And that's it for the offense, no one else collected a hit Clint Barmes had a walk.
Fernando Abad took the lose allowing a the go ahead run to score in the 7th inning on 1 hit and two walks. Atlanta's closer Craig Kimbrel came in to close out the ninth allowing one hit and striking out three.
Not really much else you can say about this one, hopefully Wandy picks us up tomorrow.

Was late to that one...
I like Downs as an option for our future 2nd baseman. He has potential. And his southern accent is awesome! Id start him just for that…

I remembered why I stopped looking at the standings...
We’re 3 games behind the Pirates, who have lost 6 in a row.

Super Bowl XLV Champions, the Green Bay Packers!
I can not wait till the trade deadline so that we can shake this team up. I want to see some young kids hungry battling to make the team next year. This I think would excite more of the fans. I think we would sell more tickets if we had the young guys out there now
I like the idea of bringing in some more Wallace/Melancon types with a couple more A ball guys for the future. If we had any depth in the minors at SP I would be up for trading Myers/Wandy and currently can see the silver lining on trading Bourn/Pence if JD can keep it up.

There is enough depth on the team now and in the minors to fill Bourn’s and Pence’s spot in the outfieild. Bourn and Pence will cost the Astros to much to stay here and we will lose Bourn in FA. Trade these guys now and get some more young guys that have alot of upside at AA AAA. Someone that can maybe be called up this year or be an invite to spring training next year.
I don’t know if blowing up everything now is the right way to go. The Astros are already heading down a rebuilding path a constant trading of anyone of value could send the Astros into what the Pirates have been feeling for the last two decades. Trade anyone of value and hope the prospects you receive in return work out.
It’s a big risk trading those guys for young prospects, because they’re a proven commodity, the prospect is not. The Astros also have the advantage of payroll so while they re-stock the farm system, they can still pay for some quality players at the big league level.

I wouldnt pay for Bourn or Pence unless they want to give us a hometown discount
Pence needs to be sandwiched between either speed or Power but his numbers will start to decline if he doesnt have someone to protect him. You have Bougeious, Bogey and Shuck to be a stop gap at center until you figure that out. For a lead off guy Bourn Oba sucks
Isn't Hunter Pence in like an 0 for 10 streak?
Astros need his bat,

Fernando Abad
I like Abad and think that he still has potential to be a solid bullpen lefty, but until he gets hisissues worked out, Mills needs to stop using him in close ballgames.
In other news Yankees have lost six in a row and the starting pitching has struggled. With CC being the only lefty in the rotation does anybody else think Wandy may have a new home by the trade deadline.just spitballing here.

it’s kind of tough not to use Abad when the rest of the bullpen is unreliable.

JD had some good points about Abad. He thinks that Abad has been hammered so much in critical situations that he is afraid to throw his fastball in the strike zone. With the memory of HRs past, he tries to get hitters to chase his fastball, but ends up in bad counts because the hitters won’t chase it. That leaves him throwing his change up and breaking pitches in the zone.
Timmy is right that Mills doesn’t have many choices which inspire confidence. I would favor sending Abad back to AAA….if the Astros had a good replacement in Oklahoma City. If Abad is replaced by a RHP, then Escalona will move up to more late inning situational lefty spots, and I don’t think that would end well.

The Braves announcers seemed to think he was telegraphing pitches last night.
