SB Nation Houston Editor's Pick
C'mon In! New Owner, New Menu!
So as long as MLB approves the owner and Uncle Drayton approves the deal, we have a new guy at the top. I am not gong to go on about whether Ed Wade or Brad Mills or the guy in the Orbit costume will be around next year (do they still do Orbit? No? Bummer.) but I will say this. There is a large number of free agents next year, pitching in particular, that will be available most likely. The Astros have a small group of players that are worth keeping around if a new owner, should choose to go the route of putting together a good team. Most of this group is young.
My thing this season is this. Trade anyone who gets hot that does not fit in with plans for next season. Wandy gets hot, trade him. Myers gets hot, trade him. Pence, Bourn, Norris, Wallace, Happ, those type of guys, they stay. Everything else must go, trade for lower A prospects or whatever the best yield would bring, and include in that trade strategy, chunks of players at AAA. There are guys at AA Corpus who seem to make up better than what is in Oklahoma. I would promote them soon, and move the dead weight place holders out. I am sick of the coddling attitude-bring them up and see what happens. Yeah, if they struggle, that happens. Long time solidified vets struggle too. I would rather see someone named Paredes fail than someone named Hall, both of whom play second base.
I would trade any veterans and marginal performers like Sanchez, Michaels, and the like basically, cut and trade. The reason I say lower prospects is higher long term upside, maybe.
The potential free agent class next year will represent an odd and often stupid decision time for the new owner. There is deep starting and relief pitching that may be available. There are a number of old contract options that were signed a few years ago that now are overvalued all around not desirable. There are a number of veteran sluggers and good position players available, some of which have not yet met that magic age of decline of 30. If one were to build on some of the younger players the Astros have, and be willing to spend a decent amount of money for a group for say a one to three year period and give the minors time to produce, then well, all hope is not lost. I'm not talking about Russ Ortiz or Kaz Matsui, but Brandon Phillips and guys with the names of Oswalt and Buehrle and Garland and Carpenter or if you will, Berkman, Infante, Hardy, or Swisher. Bell, Broxton, Capps, Cordero, Papelbon, Valverde. Or Kubel, or Donner, on Dancer....
There are a number of possibilities, and frankly, since the 2007 season, Uncle Drayton has not provided a good club and has hamstrung his GM, who in turn, did not help things much with guys like Pedro Feliz and a few others. At the end of the day, I'm an Ed Wade fan mainly because he has tried to turn the Astros around more from the ground up. At the top, he probably could not trade Roy and Lance-period-until it became obvious it was up to the owner. Uncle Drayton rode the nostalgia car until it ran out of leaded gas. If anything, Tal Smith needs to go, and Wade should get to stick around or at least be given a promotion of sorts. Not for the Astros we see playing now, but those we will hopefully be seeing in a couple of seasons. Uncle Drayton, after getting burned with Carlos Lee, Woody Williams, Jason Jennings, (okay, Purpura) wasn't spending shit. Uncle Drayton only slapped that scoreboard up for the same reason one gets a car repainted before it is sold or a roof is replaced on a house before it is put on the market.
The Uncle Drayton era is looking at sunset. The next owner can spend some money, evaluate some of the in house, MLB-ish ready talent, and put a competitive team on the field that can score and pitch. I see constant references to "lack of power" on various clubs by the sports media, the national types in particular. Got news for you-those people are living in the past or are Yankees fans. Power hitting now relies on the Braun's and Werth's, that have sweet swings, or the Adam Dunn's and Prince Fielder's that are well, big dudes that can smack a ball. Speed, defense, pitching, plate discipline, timely hitting, situational hitting, that is as potent sometimes as two guys on and swollen 270 pound guy at the plate. Those guys will be fewer and farther between until MLB teams learn to recruit young athletes better. Averages are down. That 36 year old just cannot catch up with fastballs like he could ten years ago, because he's not using PED's (or as much). Check out the free agent types for next season. A resourceful GM could probably put together a potentially good team, by fitting available free agent types to the young nucleus of pitchers and position players, that the Astros sort of have. If I owned the team, that's what I would do, and with the market shift, as it were, not doing that if you aim to field a good team would just be stupid, especially when considering that the free agent depth will likely be nice.
I would not make off season trades with the little minor league talent available that did not yield an impact player. Not that the Astros are in a position to do that. I'm just saying. It looks to me that if the new owner wants to make his mark, it must be with two starters, a closer, and three or so hitters that are expected to be impact hitters. If that does not happen over the next year, the Crane Era will open with a fizzle. Out.

Yeah but there is alot of starting pitcher depth after this season
It would be nice to get a quality bat also
I’d honestly just like to put every bit of money in player development. I don’t think the team is near contending and free agents probably just get us at most 10 extra wins. 1 year deals would be what I’d look for, and you can’t get much for that.
Im with James below
I dont think if we pick up a couple of free agents that will take money out of player development. If we go get a starting pitcher, a reliever and maybe a impact middle infielder like Reyes or Brandon Phillips and get them for 3 to 5 years. I also think you fire sale the team I would keep Wallace, Cj, Norris, Melancon, Happ off of the current roster I would get rid of everyone.
I think you have to determine how much you can actually get for a player (in trade) before deciding whether it’s worth trading them. I don’t think it’s a slam dunk that you will get a lot in return for Myers and Wandy, for instance. Both players are in multi-year contracts, which automatically reduces the pool of potential buyers. Unless the trade return is really good, I would keep Wandy. Myers’ contract is shorter and more affordable, which might make him more tradeable if he returns to 2010 form.
I more or less agree but...
I would imagine that it would be a measure of insanity if the new owner messed with the draft or shirked on player development, so I am taking that as a given. In that regard Wade and Heck and his guys look like they are doing an okay job there, and McClane already had started shelling out money for good draft picks the last two seasons. I was trying to think as a new owner who wants a team that has a chance and also wants butts in the seats, which in Houston is what happens when the team wins more often. (like most places)

Trades
He needs to go on a fire sale. everyone must go except wallace (pence and bourn) for now and try to get as many high ceiling prospects as possible. We have done a great job the last few years i feel to start stocking up our talent threw the draft but we could use the boost threw trades. If we could get 2 or 3 top 100 guys that would be awesome. My true hope is that Myers will heat up so we can get something for him and i think Wandy if he keeps up needs to be for sure traded. I love Wandy but he will bring back the most in return in my opinion.
Pence and Bourn can stay for now but if they can still play this way in 2013 and we are still 2 years away from contending then they also could be good trading peices. I deff wouldnt be surprised if one of them got traded this year tho cause i could see them bringing back some good to great prospects.
Hopefully Crane keeps his powder dry at first
there is nothing in that pool I like. Bar Grady Sizemore, but the Indians should pick up his option for 2012.
I think the new owner will be under intense pressure to field a competitive team next year. On the other hand, the available options aren’t great. It will be an interesting puzzle.
Some have characterized him as one who desperately wants to boost attendance
Some have said he’s a player development guy. I think this year’s trade deadline will be illuminatory on his philosophy and should be very interesting (assuming the deal gets done by then).

I’m not certain that there is a conflict between the objectives (boost attendance and player development). That will depend on the new owner’s strategies in each area.
It’s not hard to believe that a new owner would place a high priority on attendance. It’s critical to the profitability of the enterprise. I would be surprised if a new owner didn’t make this a high priority. Also, I would speculate that ensuring the profitability of the new regional sports network would be important to the new owner. And the new owner can have an immediate impact when the new RSN is launched.
Now:Trade everyone!…(Maybe Minus Pence)
Next season(After a quick glance at that list):
Jose Reyes
Carlos Beltran
Raul Ibanez
Roy Oswalt
Scott Kazmir
C.J. Wilson
Try and work a trade w/Texas for Catcher Taylor Teagarden to platoon maybe with Castro…Same thing for Pitcher Jake Peavy.
Keep signing ALL draft picks…ALL OF THEM.
Thoughts?
NO on Ibanez and Beltran.
YES on Reyes.
Maybe on O, Kaz, Wilson, Peavy…depends on price.
2012 Roster I’d like:
1. Bourn CF
2. Reyes SS
3. Wallace 1B
4. Pence RF
5. JD Martinez LF
6. Johnson 3B
7. Bourgeois 2B
8. Castro C
Bench: Shuck, Bogusevic, Downs, Sanchez, Towles
Trade/Release: Q, Keppinger, Hall, Barmes, Lee, Michaels
Rotation: Oswalt, Myers, Happ, Norris, Lyles
Bullpen: Abad, Wright, Del Rosario, Fulchino, Lyon, Lopez, Melancon
Trade/Release: Wandy
Demote to AAA: Escalona, Valdez, Arias, Aneury

I think Pence is your most valuable guy to trade and I dont think this season is going to be a trend
You are wrong and right
This season for Pence, could be valuable trade commodity. This season is not a trend for Hunter, it is matter of fact. Please go through the trouble to look at things like statistics and the like, before making baseless assertions that are obviously some ignorant “I called that shit” remark. Hunter Pence has hit 25 home runs a year for three years straight. He has made decent progress at reducing strike outs. He also hit .282 the last two years and is now hitting .288 or so. He is a very good number two or number five hitter, and is being misused. I would even bat him fourth right now and bench Lee or move him down in the order to five or six. His defense has been good, and will steal a few bases. Pence has been the most consistent producer at the plate the last few seasons. Let us recall that Berkman and Lee were not hitting anything last season, and the season before there were constant holes in the line ups. I still blame Carlos Lee getting hit by a pitch from Bronson Arroyo that broke Lee’s hand for screwing him up as a hitter. He has yet to return to form from that injury. Pence is the only player on the Astros the last few seasons to distinguish himself from one year to the next. He also is under team control for a couple of more seasons that will see him turn 30. You really need to not make such nonsensical statements to be taken seriously. Just saying.

Pence will not be a part of the future for the Astros
Pence is shaky at the plate and in the outfield. If he would have some control at the plate and not just swing like a mad man at everything in his eyes or every breaking pitch that is thrown I would agree with you. If Pence could learn how to walk then he would be worth keeping on this team. We have way to much depth in the outfield in the minors and would like to see the Astros get something for Pence. I love Hunter’s hustle but the guy needs to learn to use his head a little more
25 HR/85 RBI/170 H/.285BA/12 SB/.986 Fielding %
I agree he needs to reduce his strike outs and ground outs on low and away pitches. If he walks more and could hold back on a slider low and away, his BA goes up, his OBP goes up, and his stolen bases go up. He is more of a #2 or #5 hitter for me, but he is a power threat. He’s a Jason Werth/Corey Hart type outfielder, and the guy has a cannon for an arm, sorry. I saw him throw a ball from the corner to third, the base of the base, Blum caught it on the ground, a perfect throw. It wouldn’t kill me to see him go, but I’d rather him stay. We have depth in the minors with outfielders, yes, but most of the organizations major league caliber players are in Corpus, not Oklahoma, the lower minors, not AAA, which likely means, 2013 and on. I could care less about the business side, but he is also a fan favorite, the ladies and kids love him, and he sells jerseys.

No. Not Really.
Yes to Jose Reyes, Roy. Hell no on Peavy, the guy had experimental surgery to get him back to even try to pitch. I don’t care if he wins the Cy Young award this season, no. CJ Wilson is not going anywhere. He’ll be a Ranger for years more, he and Uncle Nolan have a mentor/student relationship. Kazmir has not pitched too well since 2008, no. Ibanez, old, no. Beltran, no. Beltran maybe, but not as an everyday player. Him and Jose Reyes both. If Towles hits okay this season then him and Castro will be the guys next year. If they both hit, one of them will play somewhere else, and they both have the athleticism, especially Castro, to play elsewhere. Taylor T is not needed.

Stop Bi***ing & Get Pitching
I do not want to see the Astros drafting a lefty in the 1st round.
A rose with no fragrance is like a baseball player with no average. *cough* Joe Inglett...
More Realistic Targets
This is the roster I would think about pursuing.
RF Hunter Pence, R/Lance Berkman, S (days off only)
CF Bourn, L/Bourgeois, R (straight platoon)
LF JD Martinez, R/Carlos Lee, R/Lance Berkman, S (match ups, Martinez getting more starts)
1ST Brett Wallace, L/Lance Berkman, S (for days off only)
2ND Omar Infante, R/Bourgeois, R (days off for Infante)
SS Jose Reyes, S/Marco Scutaro, R
3B Aramis Ramirez, R (platoon/regular time off)/Infante, R.
C JR Towles, R/Jason Castro, L
Bench
Scutaro, R
Lee, R
Castro, L
Berkman, S
Bourgeois, R
Rotation
Roy Oswalt, R
Bud Norris, R
Jon Garland, R
JA Happ, L
Jason Marquis, R
Closer
Heath Bell, R
Set Up
Frank Francisco, R/Jon Rauch, R
Bullpen
Wilton Lopez, R
Damaso Marte, L
Call up’s
Jordan Lyles
Jimmy Paredes
Koby Clemens
Wladimir Sutil
That would be about what I think is possible. Roughly.

How many of these guys are you going to have to sign to multi year deals to get them??
Bourn and Pence will cost a fortune
Likely not many.
Heath Bell, Omar Infante, maybe Reyes and Ramirez, but the reason I am keen on the latter two, as well as Oswalt and Marquis, is that they are talented but they have also had trouble staying healthy, or in Berkman’s case, is getting older. Older players are not making the kind of money or getting mega multi-year deals like they used to, at least sane teams. There has been a noticeable shift in how older guys are getting treated, that is one reason why Albert Pujols contract is such a gut wrenching decision, because the Cardinals know that if they gave Pujols an 8 or 10 year deal (assuming that is what he is after) that they could take a bath pretty much any year. I wish baseball was like football and you just release someone and not owe them every dime on a bad contract. Jon Garland hasn’t had a home since he left Chicago. Marquis and Garland are sinkerballers. Garland has been an innings eater his whole career and is money down the stretch and in the playoffs. With the make of the players I selected, I was emphasizing versatility and the ability to keep some power bats in the line up as well as open a slot for some outfielders perhaps, as you had noted above, that is where we have a glut. I have the minor leaguers tagged as replacements in case someone gets hurt or struggles, ones who might be legit. I do think Jordan Lyles might get called up and he might pitch well and he might not. If he does, scratch one starter off the list. I understand that Ramirez may have some issues. Last year his average was down, but he still hit 25 HR in only 124 games. He would be given regular time off, as would all of the older veteran players, to help minimize the chance for injuries. This year, his long ball has not come around but his average is back up. Ramirez and Garland might want to get out of LA and Chicago anyway, the former is a disaster and the latter, well, Chicago. Drama drama drama there. Plus, what would you have the new owner do? I don’t mind watching a young team, but we’ve been watching scrubs the last three or four seasons. They got some good players that are young and might come around, bring on some good veteran players that could maybe be starter caliber instead of straight up bench players. If they just straight up promote a bunch of players that’s fine with me too, I just don’t know if that is the answer either. I neglected to mention Melancon, yeah, keep him, thank you for pointing that out to me.

I DO NOT WANT TO SEE LEE ON THIS ROSTER NEXT YEAR.
Do you get rid of Melancon? Aramis is 32 years old and has declined the last two years. Would rather keep Wandy than get Jason Marquis and dont you think Jordan Lyles will start the season out on the 40 man roster next year??? Jd wont get called up until next June at least
Yeah, I’d probably change mine a bit.
Yes on Oswalt, Berkman and Jose Reyes. Try and sign CJ Wilson. Try and trade for Jake Peavy. Try and trade for a catcher ((?)Rangers-minor leaguer Taylor Teagarden—or one of the Reds catchers, or Reds minor league catchers—or someone else…I don’t know).
That might make for a pretty solid team.
