Astros Minor League Recap: The Cycle!

The big story for last night lies with none other than Tommy Manzella!  Last year's opening day starter at shortstop is back in AAA this year after the trade for Clint Barmes and the decision to go with Angel Sanchez to start the year.  Well, after a hot start at the beginning of the year, he has cooled off a bit recently, except for last night.  Manzo did what every hitter dreams of, but few ever get the opportunity, to hit for the cycle!

Batting in the eight hole, he didn't ge this first at-bat until the second inning when he hit a double.  His next at-bat was in the fourth when he hit that most difficult triple and followed up with a single in the sixth inning.  Then, in the eighth inning, he came up for his fourth at-bat with just one hit left to go for the cycle.  The home run ball!  The home run was the perfect way to cap off his cycle.

Congratulations to Tommy Manzella!  I really hope he gets another opportunity to play in the majors.

Bio Mist is still walking. That’s pretty impressive. Its also good to see Manzella hitting good. Now if Barmes can start hitting and raise his value a little bit then Maybe the Astros flip Barmes at the deadline if they are out of contention. Out of all of the players the Astros have that could be traded, I think moving Barmes is one where it wont affect the team as much because Manzella could slide in there with similar production.

Bio was suppossed to be Jio Mier

I thought it was some new nickname that I didn’t even know about.

If they do flip Barmes and bring up Manzella I'd like for them

move Sutil up from Corpus to OKC and see what he can do against AAA pitching again. SS and 2B in this organization are beginning to look very interesting.

Sutil and Manzella

Are pretty much AAAA players now. Limited upside. I’d rather see Wikoff promoted, as he is prospect age, and hitting better than both of them.

I agree with that but you can't ignore the fact that Sutil is hitting ALOT better

this season than he ever has. If he has finally put it together let’s see what he does against better competition.

Agree; excited about Wikoff’s resurgence. How could he do so poorly in Lancaster last year and is now tearing the cover off in AA?

by Snake Diggity on May 11, 2011 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Part of it is luck

Yet his strikeout rate, walk rate, and ISO have all improved (the latter is not saying much, he has almost as close to zero power as you can have).

I could see him winding up with some wacky OBP-heavy line like .300/.400/.400 at season’s end if this keeps up. At the major league level, that would be a star player at shortstop, but it’s doubtful he can hit .300 in the majors, even with his contact skills.

bill hall, etc

it doesn’t take long to get tired of bill hall. he isnt doing anything much to help team. he doesnt seem to have much range as 2b…i thought that both hits off lyons in blown save should have or could have been caught by hall..was he just slow? out of position? lots of hits go thru btwn 2nd and 1st. he sure is not a clutch hitter. in pressure spots..this guy swings at a lot of bad pitches and he gets no good results.. is it possible to trade him? downs is good, vasquez also, or manzella…. i would send johnson down to aaa FOR A WHile…when rebuilding why add parts..?? why did we add barmes and hall? waste of $$. if i was new owner i would be more disciplined. choose your path and stay on it… i think bpen will be ok eventually. someof the minor league relievers look pretty good. rebuilding takes time/patience. hope new owner sticks with plan.. mike h

starters?

what is wrong with myers? he looked good after he gave up 6 runs. concentration? the three middle guys happ, rodriguez, and norris are looking good. anuery r looks good in my opinion..he did good in second start after he gave up some runs…hung in there…pence is a major league star… bourn and bourgois also… boy are they two fast guys…catchers are hitting better than expected.. clee..is put down by some, but i think he is an ok defender and that he is on way to 100 rbis…as usual.. how many natl leaguers get 100 rbis each yr? about 20?…i would have bourgois at 2b…clee in lf..downs or vasquez at 3b barmes at ss.. really he looks pretty good…use both catchers…Q and towles…wallace at 1b…the hitting machine…mike h

Not sure this is the only answer, but his fastball is down about 2 mph according to pitch fx data.

Sutil

Has cooled off quite a bit lately. Altuve is still going strog though and hovering around .400.

by conroestro on May 11, 2011 12:25 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Guys I'm impressed with

Clemens has cooled down, but it still doing better than I expected.
DeLome is hitting very well despite irregular PT.
Wes Wright seems to be settling in.
Brandon Wikoff’s game has taken off; remains to be seen if it’s sustainable. If so, look out.
Arcenio Leon has impressed me. Urckfitz and Robinson have good numbers but may not sustain.
Hinze is showing great power, even for Lancaster.
Altuve continues to shred.
Grant Hogue is doing better than I expected.
Jake Buchanan is killing high A, which is impressive.
Pitkin is showing life as a lefty reliever.
Kirk Clark continues to do a good job closing.
Of course Chris Wallace has done extremely well, but there are a LOT of guys impressing in Lexington (Mier, Kvasnicka, Bailey, Adamson, King, Orloff, Burnett are all hitting very well).
Tanner Bushue is doing well amongst a very disappointing Lexington rotation.
Chowning, Streilein, and De Leon appear to be doing well.

MiLB Standings :(

OKC is in last place.
Corpus Christi is in last place.
Lancaster is in 2nd in their division, 6th overall. They have a losing record.
Lexington is tied for 1st in theird division, but 8th overall. They also have a losing record.

Have things ever been this bad?

If I’m the GM/Owner/etc of the astros, one of hte 1st things I would do is stack the lower level teams and create a winning atmosphere.

by Snake Diggity on May 11, 2011 1:04 PM CDT reply actions

Its definitely been worse. Oic just split a series against the first place storm chasers and have been playing good of late. Corpus is definitely struggling right now. Lancaster just swept a series over the weekend. Lexington has been decent. At least you can say they are tied for the top of their division.

by conroestro on May 11, 2011 1:14 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Easily not the worst, in fact most of the squads usually don’t have close to .500 records. Although win-loss records mean nothing.

OkC lost one of it’s best bats to the majors in bogey and their best reliever is his second stint in the majors.

CC’s two best players are on the dl but are slated to return this week in kuechel and JD.

Lancaster did have a winning record and will bounce back.

Lexingtons pitching staff has been bad but it has a lot of good arms that will come around.

by Subber10 on May 11, 2011 2:32 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

CC is in the TxLeague where the few team in it face each other over and over.

These teams get to know each other rather well. A lot of familiarity there. so the record isnt really that important.

I am rooting so hard for Carpenter to succeed beyond expectations

Just imagine it. “Hey Cardinals fans. We got an elite young closer from you. In exchange for Pedro Feliz.”

I like the idea of Manzella at 2nd base and Barmes at SS

Would be very good defense but unless Manzellas bat is really on the rise like he’s showing, we would be in trouble offensively. On second thought its hard to be worse than what Hall has shown so far.

by Its Gonna Happen on May 11, 2011 5:40 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

At this point

I think you have to put the best defensive team on the field that you can. By doing so you allow the pitchers to attack more in the zone, knowing that BIP will be converted to outs, instead of hits/errors.

I would start playing Downs more at 3rd, and get Johnson more cage work.
