Who Wants Some Sloppy Joes. Astros win 9 - 6
This was not a very pretty game, but lucky for us Astro fans "Your Astros" came out on top. The Astros collected two errors will the Brewers collected none. However the Brewers helped the Astros with quite possible the worst base running I've ever seen.
Here's my description of that play from the game thread:
guy at third got in a run down, out.
guy at second got in a run down, out
guy who hit the ball almost got tagged out.
That would of been a SportsCenter top play my friends.
But that wasn't the only thing of note, the Astros did go into extra innings, winning the game by way of some unlikely sources.
Before we get to that though I would like to note that Carlos Lee hit his second home run of the season a two run blast off Shaun Marcum in the first inning, to put the Astros up by three. The Astros were able to maintain that lead, even tacking on a few runs until the ninth inning, when Brandon Lyon came on and blew the save. He however would redeem himself.
Brett Myers did not have his best game going 6.1 innings allowing 10 hits and five runs, while walking 1 and striking out 4 batters. In the seventh inning he would give up a homerun to Ryan Braun, his seventh, essentially ending his evening. Fernando Abad, Jeff Fulchino, and Mark Melancon all followed with scoreless outings, which opened the door for Lyon's fifth save of the season. He promptly shut that door allowing the Brewers to tie the game.
But maybe that was part of the plan, as Humberto Quintero hit a two run double in the tenth to put the Astros up by two runs, followed by an RBI double by yes Brandon freaking Lyon, his first Major League hit. To be honest he looked pretty good in the batters box, and Mills might consider letting him hit if the opportunity were to arise. After running the bases Lyon finished the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th inning.
Not the prettiest win by the Astros, but it was certainly entertaining.

Looks like I missed a good one.
Crazy ending. So, does Valdez or Melancon close tomorrow?
Super Bowl XLV Champions, the Green Bay Packers!
Tough spot for Lyon
Although maybe I’ve just lowered my expectations too much. Clinging to a one run lead, he’s got to face their 2-3-4 hitters. Thought he pitched Braun real well, who did a remarkable job of extending the AB until he got a pitch he could put in play. Then they guessed right on a hit and run and Braun was able to score all the way from first (just barely) on what would have been just a single down the line from Fielder. Braun might have scored on a fly ball later in the inning, but maybe not. Good play by the Brewers more than collapse from Lyon, I thought. Again, maybe I’m going easy on him, because I doesn’t ever expect him to go 1-2-3, especially through the heart of their order.

Mills should be concerned about Melancon’s work load at this point. (JD was concerned about Melancon’s FB suffering with excessive use.) Between Friday’s and Saturday’s games, Melancon has thrown about 35 pitches. If Melancon is used in the game, I am guessing it might be a partial inning with Abad getting the other part of the inning. I have my doubts that Melancon would be used in the closer position (assuming the Astros are in a position to win the game).
I think Fulchino would probably be used as closer. I don’t know if Mills has enough confidence in Valdez to use him in a closer situation yet. Valdez had a rough outing on Friday.

Fucking crazy day at work...
I missed everything after the 8th and that’s probably for the best as I would have crumbled under the pressure…
What did I tell you guys? First we work on the win then we work on winning the series now we work on back to back series wins…then the winning streak comes alive!

Big AB by Brett Wallace
fighting to get that double to spark off the 3-run rally in the 10th.
Hall as well had a good day at the office.
Tough call
On the high curve that looked like a third strike on Braun, right before that home run. Never saw if they showed the Fox Trax, or whatever it’s called to see if their fancy doohickey thought it was a strike or not. Would have been a much different game. JD mentioned early in the game about giving the Brewers extra bases and extra outs, and sure enough, the Astros gave them both all night. With the exception of the almost triple play (which came right after a keystone cops moment on what looked like could have been a double play), the Brewers played a much cleaner game. It’s amazing the Astros came out on top of this one. Doesn’t feel like the greatest win, but would have been an awful loss.

The Fox Trax showed it was a strike. JD said the ump must have thought it was high.
Brett Wallace has an extra reason of thanks that the Astros won this game. His misplay, just before the Brewers’ base running gaffe, would be running on continuous loop at ESPN if the Astros had lost.

Is it time to start asking
How much rope CJ’s second half of last season buys him? He has looked, and been, miserable and confused out there.

True. The predictions of regression have materialized with a vengeance. And CJ seems to be letting the frustration get to him. I have wondered whether sending him back to AAA would let him get into a groove like it did last season. But I doubt that the Astros would do that yet, thinking that they should give him more time.

mid-may…that’s when barmes and keppinger return, right?
why not drop cj to 7th (or even 8th) in the order and play him through the end of july? are we in win-now mode?
has his defense been that bad?
let’s see what he’s made of long-term…
Pedro Feliz is a FA right?
let’s pick him up.

Downs can play 3B, right?
But yeah, I agree he deserves more time to turn things around. Question is how much more.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
yeah, I would think that Downs would be the logical choice to get more time at 3d base. Keppinger can also play 3d base, as well as Bill Hall.

I also wonder how Keppinger’s range will be affected by taking a bone out of his foot. (His range was bad to begin with.) Could it turn out that Keppinger’s defense is limited to playing 3d base? Pure speculation, since Keppinger just now will begin to work out in the field.
