Tuesday Liftoff Links

While the Astros were kicking back on their flight to New York City, I was putting together some high flying links for your entertainment.

Minor Leagues

Legendary day for Lexington sluggers | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball
Want a pick me up from Sunday's loss? Look to the minors where Chris Wallace and Telvin Nash went absolutely off. Each had three homeruns, a double and four runs scored, in an 18-9 victory over Asheville.

Corpus Christi Hooks packing an early punch " Corpus Christi Caller-Times
Joel Roza of the Corpus Christi Caller Times presents a strong case for why, if you live anywhere near Corpus Christi, you should buy a ticket and check out the team playing there. J.D. Martinez, Wladimir Sutil, Jimmy Paredes, Dallas Keuchel and the remaining two pitchers from the Lexington Five, Ross Seaton and Kyle Greenwalt. Quite frankly he make me want to fly out there just to check out a game at ol Whataburger Field.

Homer keys Mier's productive night | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball
Jiovanni Mier looks to make his way back into relevancy as an Astro prospect. So far he's off to a great start.

Agreed with wanting to see the Hooks in action.

I watched both Keuchel and Seaton pitch on MILB.TV and was impressed with both. Keuchel more so than Seaton because Keuchel had control and was inducing ground balls left and right.Seaton looked like he had decent stuff, but his location was off.

The hitters for Corpus have been ridiculous. I am working in Corpus in 2 weeks and will definitely be checking the schedule to see if they are home.

Question about the draft

I know that Wade and co always say that they take the best player available even though it seems like they draft for need, but I was wondering how much the current state of our farm system will affect this years draft. For the last several years the Astros have lacked prospects with good bats, both power and average, but this year they seem to have players that have both. If some of the guys (Nash, Wallace, Heath, Altuve, Paredes, Austin, Villar) continue to hit good up until the draft do you think that the Astros would focus on a different area. They need power arms for the rotation and this years draft has some.

With the amount of players in the MLB draft, BPA is very subjective. It seems like they have drafted guys who fit into a position that the system lacks, but at the same time, it could be a guy that Bobby Heck truly believes is the BPA. Now there is the situation where Tal Smith made his plug and told Heck that we needed a college bat with the supplemental pick, which changes some things. With the way things are beginning to look, I really don’t think they will draft a need. I see them taking a pitcher, just because there are so many that have such high ceilings, and several fit the projectable mold that heck likes. Although, there are some high school bats that are moving up boards that look like guys that Heck would like as well. I really think they’ll take the best available this year.

Might be a good year to pick a polished college arm

But yeah, I do think you mostly have to stick to BPA. Especially since the team only has two blue chip prospects at the moment (Lyles and Villar—although others are making their case for that status in the early going).

I would love to see Crane buy the team before the draft and keep the same personnel in place for the draft, and just go crazy with the draft budget this year and sign everyone. Wouldn’t that send a positive message to fans as the new owner. I know the purchase wont be settled by then but its okay to wish. I hope Drayton doesn’t go cheap on the draft with the thought process that this isn’t his problem anymore.

I read that also in regards to Crane, but I figured it was just something that he could chalk up to being taken out of context or were false claims.

I’d like to see them draft either a high ceiling pitcher or an infielder who is highly developed (Rendon).

There is no possibility if rendon, but the pitchers will be available. Take your pick, there’s plenty to choose from

I like it. Im a pitchers kind of guy.

Late may early June I’m going to get some profiles up of some of the potential picks I’m sure Orem and David will too just like last year
