Adam Wainwright is heading back to St. Louis to have his right elbow examined, and right now the team expects the worst. "I can say just based on the initial evaluation from our training staff, things do not look encouraging," said GM John Mozeliak according to Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. ESPN's Buster Olney says (on Twitter) that it appears the team is expecting their ace to have Tommy John surgery, which would keep him out for all of 2011.
*I don't see how more people can't recognize the correlation between poor mechanics and serious arm injuries.

I see with my baseball eye
an inverted W

Apparently, later version of McCoy’s report were changed and the Gomes description was eliminated. But the description of Dusty Baker’s reaction is almost as bad.
Now there is some dispute about the accuracy of McCoy’s description of what Gomes said. Gomes denies it, and says he is a friend of Wainwright. A mlb.com reporter who was there also says it didn’t happen that way. See comment 20 at this BBTF thread.
At the Vivaelbirdos site, a couple of pitching mechanics gurus posted photos of Wainwright’s inverted W, like baggs did, pointing out that they had predicted this would happen. A lot of commenters at Vivaelbirdos took their frustration out on the mechanics commenters, cursing them, and almost blaming them in shoot-the-messenger fashion.
WOW...
Huge blow. Carpenter’s always an injury risk and now Wainwright might be out. With Jaime Garcia and Westbrook leading their rotation they look like a 4th or 5th place team. Even with Carpenter there (and no Wainwright) … it’s hard to see them topping the Reds or Brewers.
It's a shame...
But there’s no denying that it’s good news for the rest of the NL central teams for 12-18 months. I’m sure he’ll be ok with the $15 mil he’s made over the last few years. Some people think this could, in part, push Pujols to leave St. Louis next year. We could be witnessing the fall of the Cardinals into mediocrity.
