Jason Castro faces foot surgery
Astros' catcher Jason Castro, already trying to come back from knee surgery last year, injured his foot in winter ball and will undergo surgery. Castro believes that the stress of coming back from the knee injury contributed to his foot injury. If all goes well, Castro is expected to resume action sometime in spring training.

This could be a blessing in disguise
Not everybody agrees with me when I question whether Castro is ready for the ML. Some say the best way to prepare him is to get him in there and let him learn. But I was thinking, you know who doesn’t like to rush prospects? The Tampa Bay Rays. They seem to favor the slow approach and its worked out pretty well for them so far. Hopefully this gives the FO an excuse to allow JC to work his way back up. Here’s hoping whenever he does come back he’s healthy and ready for big league pitching (both hitting and catching)

At least we signed Craig Tatum
The savior of the universe.
Can you say Tatum verbatim?

I always liked Theriot
I would be fine with signing him, if the price isn’t too high. I think he is due for some positive regression to his batting average and I think he’s probably an average defensive shortstop despite defensive metrics the last couple years (certainly a lot better than Sanchez).

He’s also going to be way more expensive.

I would certainly rather then allocate that money to Jorge Soler or Yoenis Cespedes, but I don’t know if Crane will open up the pocketbook enough for either of those. How much will Theriot actually cost? A few million?
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
That’s at least a couple million more than Sanchez is going to cost. Theriot isn’t going to be a significant improvement over Sanchez. Plus Sanchez is getting into his prime years so he could actually improve upon his numbers from the past two years.

I just really don’t like the idea of what Sanchez’s defense could do to our young pitchers.
http://www.crawfishboxes.com
Theriot isn’t a wiz at the position either. In fact he’s more likely to decline further defensively due to his age. At least Sanchez will be heading into his prime years.

He's not a whiz, but I've always felt he was underrated defensively
I think he would be a substantial upgrade over Sanchez, though not as good as Barmes was.

Time to buy Castro a bubble-wrap tuxedo.
Gotta protect that investment.

We should start calling him Jason Glasstro…
…since he’s so fragile? Get it?!

Rangers news
So there not division rivals, and a lot of this is speculation, but I read this article on LSB that suggests the Rangers don’t have much more payroll flexibility this offseason suggesting that Crane and Cuban raised the purchase price to high, and that the club has to buy out Greenberg. The Rangers were thought to be players on Prince Fielder and Yu Darvish, but this speculation suggests that they may not be able to take on those type of commitments anymore.
by conroestro on Dec 13, 2011 1:21 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Or they could just be taking the smart analytical road to those two players. I saw something that suggested Yu Darvish isn’t going to pitch any better than Colby Lewis who pitched in the same league as Darvish with similar results. Committing a lot of money to Fielder is not the brightest idea either.

True. You never know how Darvish’s performance will translate, and Fielder is destined to be overpaid.

This may or may not be related to Castro's injury.....
but it’s worth noting that the Astros’ re-signed Quintero t a $1 milllion contract. I’m glad; I had begun to think that the Astros might non-tender him. Quintero’s defense can more than pay for his salary.
Yeah that's a decent deal for us
Especially with more questions about Castro surfacing.
I wonder if the Astros will look at Mike Zunino for first overall depending on how things pan out leading up to draft day. Right now he is looking like a top 5 pick so it’s not a stretch to think he might push his stock up farther with a good season. He looks like more of an all-around sound pick than any other college position player to me. A lot may come down to how Mark Appel performs next season, though. He could elevate his stock to a Strasburgian level or sink to the later stages of the first round.

The more I think about it
the more I see us going after a pitcher in the first.

Appel, Gausman, McCullers, Giolito
Plenty of options in that area. I would prefer a position player, preferably a college position player, all else being equal, though. They have lower “got injured and their career was never the same” rates.
In general, I think BPA rules the day. For me, the best player available is wide open right now though. There may be as many as a dozen names in that conversation. We’ll have to see how much things narrow down as draft day approaches. Hopefully one guy steps up as being head and shoulders above the competition, whatever position he may play.

Castro
Tough break for him. Do all these injuries impact his long-term future at catcher?
They dont help
The foot thing is no big deal, Kepp had it last year and made a full recovery after giving it time to heal. The torn ACL might effect his mobility/quickness and can definately be a factor depending on how he heals. I wouldn’t consider him injury prone though.
by Its Gonna Happen on Dec 13, 2011 9:09 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Opposite lower extremity injuries are extremely common after a significant surgery in the knee. The large majority of people with ACL surgery subconsciously favor the opposite leg. The injury of in Castro’s foot is most likely attributed to increased long term stress in the foot. I think that this is likely due to Castro’s work ethic of trying to get back as soon as he could and he just wore his body out. I’m not going to call him injury prone because he doesn’t have a history of it until this year.
