Why I will not miss the Astros
Pirates fan here, just kinda checking out other blogs and figured I'd write a little article as I pondered the Astros. I have compiled a list of why I'm glad the Astros are leaving for the AL West.
- Jim Crane - He fired Ed Wade. That right there is enough to convince me he will be semi-competent owner. I personally expect him to be even more than that.
- Jeff Luhnow - The dude looks like he knows what he's doing. I think Astros fans will be pleased that he is their GM.
- Jose Altuve - The dude is awesome. Who cares how tall he is. He will be a good ballplayer for many years
- J.D. Martinez - I like him immensely as well. He nearly carried my dying NL-only fantasy baseball team to a crown in the last several weeks
- George Springer - Very good draft pick. I'm very high on him.
- The Rest of the Farm System - It's weird, I almost think I'm more passionate about advocating for the Astros farm system than the Pirates farm system. I'm a big fan of the Astros farm system, love its depth of interesting players, especially positional guys, and think its vastly underrated
So that basically sums it up. As the Pirates attempt to crawl from the cellar of the NL Central, I'm very glad we don't have to claw our way out against the Astros.

Although
you get the unenviable task of facing Pujols again in-division. Sorry, I really am.

We can always hope for the free agency curse
where he signs a huge deal then gets hurt just enough to never be the same player again, which in his case would simply bring him down to average. I could live with that.

It’s really nice to read things from other perspectives. Good read.

Thanks for the post.
I also enjoyed your writeup on Drew Cumberland as a potential rule 5 pick.
I am excited with the changes that are taking place and also with the fact that there is finally a clear cut direction that is being taken. You were also probably right about the farm system being interesting right now. There are a lot of promise still in guys like DeShields, Folty, Ovando, Houser, Armstrong etc. That if a few of those guys figure it out then the system will look more promising.

Unless they do it next year
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
Nooooo
I’m tired of finishing 6th!

It probably won't happen though
Look who has Clint Barmes now. Not us..

Nah
They have us and the Cubbies to keep them out of the six or even the fifth spot. With Fielder likely gone and the Braun mess the Brewers could even give them a run for it… heck the Cards will be weakened and with a few good breaks the Pirates could be in the hunt going into October.
Ok was not too upset about leaving the NL before I wrote that because I figured it would take us the better part of a decade to be a true contender again in either league…. but one might not have to be all that good to make the playoffs in the NL Central next season.

My good point was in response to joe that with the Astros out of the central the Pirates will never finish sixth again.

Anyone can win this division this year.
I just really doubt the Astros have a chance. The Brewers are in dispensary, losing Braun for 50 games and Fielder, the Reds are rapidly improving through trades and signings, Pirates are improving and trying as hard as they can to improve through signings, the Cardinals lost Pujols, and the Cubs are the Cubs. It’s anyones’ division.
Well
with the Latos trade, I think the Reds are the clear favorite at this point.

I thought the Reds were the "clear" favorites in 2011
and they finished way back (though honestly I thought Reds would battle Brewers for the division – I picked Cardinals to finish a distant third).

If Fielder leaves the Brewers and Braun gets a 50-game suspension, I would pin the Reds up as favorite.

I was assuming this, which I shouldn’t probably..
