I have been a die hard Astros fan since the early 90's. I grew up idolizing the Killer B's and enjoying the greatest moments in the franchise's history. However, over the past several years I've become incredibly disenfranchised with the organization. The ownership and management's blatant ineptitude for running a major league baseball team has begun to take its toll on me. It has gotten so bad recently that I have begun to question my very fan-hood.
The other night, I wasn't able to sleep so I started to think about various things. Naturally, after some time, I got to thinking about why it is that I still follow the Houston Astros. After spending approximately an hour processing this, it occurred to me that I didn't have a good reason. The franchise that I grew up loving and supporting is long gone... The last of the Killer B's retired 5+ years ago. Management traded away our future for temporary gains. The owner ignored obvious signs clearly indicating that a rebuilding stage was necessary in order to try and continuously field a playoff team while driving the organization into the ground in the process. The Astros, in just a matter of a few years, had gone from a very successful team to the laughing stock of the MLB. Their farm system had rapidly deteriorated, becoming one of the worst in baseball. The only hope I had was that a new owner would swoop in and save the day. Instead, the Astros were bought by an immoral, sketchy, cheap ass businessman in Jim Crane. As a part of this sale, it's appearing that Crane will approve a move to the AL West ending years of tradition and rivalries. Hello 9 pm start times and tougher competition. Goodbye NL. Oh how things have changed in such a short period of time.
It occurred to me while lying in bed the other night that there is nothing left of the Astros that I grew up loving. The Houston Astros are a professional baseball team that is expected to perform well (or at least try to do so). Why should I continue to support such a poorly run organization? At this point, I am leaning towards finding a new team to follow for the 2012 season or quitting following professional baseball entirely.
