The BTB catcher defense rating article turned out to be disappointing when I read it. After describing the improved methodologies which have been developed, the author then says he uses a simplified approach which excludes pitch framing. Since pitch framing turns out to have one of the highest impact values, that is a substantial omission. I am also skeptical of the simplified approach to measuring pitch blocking. That said, maybe we should be happy that Tatum rated that highly.
I agree. I thought I’d have to re-do my post on Craig Tatum when I read it, but then I saw the methodology was based on errors, passed balls, and caught stealing rates – all things heavily affected by official scorers and the pitcher.
I tried to find Tatum’s results in some of the pitch framing studies. The only article I found which included spreadsheets that also showed the result for Tatum was in Baseball Prospectus at the end of the season. In part time duty over a couple of years, Tatum was +6.1 runs due to pitch framing. That’s pretty good.

I can't believe that George Springer didn't crack MLB.com's top 10 Astros prospects.
He’s been in the top 3 in every Astros list I’ve seen so far. Do they exclude players who were drafted in 2011 from their rankings?

I don’t think they have added new drafted prospects (on the MLB Prospect Watch)

That’s the first thought thing I noticed. Then again he wasn’t exactly a standout in his debut (small sample size)

I don't know if I trust MLB's ranking system.
They seem to be a little sketchy on their justification sometimes. Like explaining that Jonathan Villar’s strikeout numbers will get better when he sees better pitching.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
What?! lol
Better pitching will help his strikeout rate??

I don't understand the catcher ranking list
but Pudge Rodriguez 17 and Brian McCann 105 seem way out of kilter under any standard

Very uplifting view on DDJ
After reading this I’m not as down on him as I was and am reminded that he has plus plus speed with good bat speed. Those two tools should be enough to give him a boost next year but if he improves his swing he could be a real breakout. Now if only Mier could breakout with him, we’d have a new found hope for the future again…
