The Marlins' High-Rolling Could Be Good For Us
The Florida Marlins have changed their name to the Miami Marlins and altered their logo in order to win the Ugliest Logo in the Majors Award. They make these changes because they are on their way into a new stadium which they finagled out of some politicians. So the misfortune of Miami-Dade County school children, who will go without books for a thousand years so that adult millionaires can have an up-to-date playground, opens up an opportunity for our Astros.
Just like the Astros when they moved into Enron Field, the Marlins expect to generate more income which they will put towards increasing their payroll (allegedly). The Marlins have been linked to Jose Reyes, Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, and Mark Buehrle. Supposedly they won't just trade away all their free agent acquisitions after they win a World Series this time. I'll believe it when I see it. The two free agents that have been linked to the Marlins that I find most interesting are Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder. Personally, I hope Pujols signs a 10 year $300 million contract with the Cardinals so that in a few years they can have an albatross contract that dwarfs Carlos Lee's, but as far as Prince Fielder goes, I really hope the Marlins sign him.
Now, I don't hope the Marlins sign him because I am a Marlins fan. I hope they sign him because he will be a fixture at first base in Miami for the next 7 years or so. If they do sign him, I hope Ed Wade gives them a call and says, "So that Buehrle fellow is a fine pitcher. I see why you want him in your rotation. That is an absolutely brilliant idea. It's really too bad that so many other teams want him. Boy, I bet the Yankees have driven his asking price through the roof, and you did just spend a huge chunk of change on Prince...oh, well." Thoughtful pause. "Hey, you know what? I got this pitcher that has been fairly similar to Buehrle over the past few seasons by the name of Wandy. And he doesn't get paid as much. Do you still have that loud mouth Logan Morrison..."
Maybe there are other prospects in the Marlin's system that would fit the Astros better, but I wouldn't mind having a young power bat even if there is a bit of a traffic jam forming around first base. So I hope Ed checks in with Larry because the Marlins could match up in a trade of Wandy Rodriguez.
Spend, Marlins, spend!
Spend, Marlins, spend!
Go, Marlins!

Awesome Post
I agree, While we are down we want other clubs to over spend. LoMo would be a good fit for the Stros, just too bad we don’t have a say in what the Astros do.

Wandy for Morrison?
That’s probably fair considering the salary the Marlins will be taking on. Not sure how many long term problems it solves in Houston, but at least it adds another legitimate major league starter to the team. And somebody interesting to the clubhouse. I’m in favor of this, even if I think it would have little impact on the Astros winning percentage in the next 3-4 seasons.
Matt Dominguez at 3B…defensive wizard who can’t hit much. At SS they had Osvaldo Martinez (also nothing to get excited about), but he got traded for Ozzie Guillen. Which is hilarious.
I don’t see the Marlins trading any young pitching prospects….it’s been their M/O to keep their pitching prospects to keep their costs down, then trade them off when they get expensive.
That said, they have a new park, they look like they want to spend, and who knows how they’re going to act going forward.
FWIW, scuttlebutt is that Dominguez will be the starter in Florida in 2012. I don’t think he’d be on the table anyway. My understanding is that the Marlins’ farm system is not very good.
I'm surprised he is supposed to be the starter over
Emilio Bonifacio. I always kind of liked him. I wonder if they’d give him up. He could play short or third and lead off better than Schafer.
I wouldn’t give up Wandy for Bonifacio. He may be better than what the Astros have now, but I don’t think he is a long term starter. He had a career year in 2011, and I question whether he can come close to repeating it. He had a .372 BABIP in 2011, which screams regression.
Now that I look more at their prospects
Morrison looks the most interesting. I wonder if he can play first better than left.
Yes. He is a real first baseman. His fielding problems arose because the Marlins switched him to LF in order to keep Gabby Sanchez at first base.
I bet LoMo would be upset if he got moved here.
He looked so happy in his Miami Marlins uniform unveil.
I wonder if he’d vent on his twitter.

I think their new Logo & Uniforms look great.

3rd Batter Strike out looking on 94 mph fastball
Overall, his command and control was lacking. His stuff reminds me of Henry Sosa’s.

Jake Goebbert having a nice nice in AFL. It's televised on MLB network
3-3
2 singles, 1 double
Looks like he’s got some line-drive power. Throw him in the mix for next year for RF.
RF Candidates:
Brian Bogusevic
Jason Bourgeois
Travis Buck
J.B. Shuck
Jake Goebbert
Nick Stavinoha
Sadly, I don’t think the Astros wanted quality, they just wanted quantity. Perhaps they are trying for the needle in the haystack approach.

Marlins reportedly are close to signing Jose Reyes
Hanley Ramirez would shift to 3d base. Perhaps that forecloses the Marlins from signing Pujols. But, if it doesn’t, a team with Ramirez, Reyes, and Pujols around the infield would be pretty good.
