Ed Wade says he will wait to see how Jason Michaels rehabs from his injury before talking to him about re-signing with the Astros. I can only guess at the reaction around here if the Astros re-sign Michaels. That would be funny.

Wade will corner the market for 5th outfielders...

Did you see Steve Campbell's article about Paredes and Barmes?
Basically, Wade said that while we’ll try to bring back Barmes, Paredes could be moved back to SS if necessary. As much as a bummer as that might be, I guess it’s better than the alternative (Sanchez).
It’s worth noting that what the Astros can do in the off-season will depend on the ownership situation. So, I suppose that may mean that if Selig draws out the approval process, we can look forward to Michaels as the team’s free agent signing.
I probably would prefer to suffer through Sanchez rather than ruin Paredes’ career. Paredes should start the season in the minors if he is going to learn how to play shortstop. Paredes has only played 31 games at shortstop in his 5 years as a professional (and he committed 20 errors at shortstop in those 31 games). It doesn’t seem responsible to expect him to learn how to play shortstop at the ML level. That said, I didn’t get the impression that Wade really wants to convert Paredes to shortstop—I think Campbell is sort of playing it up for news value. Wade said that he doesn’t want to make Paredes convert to another position after Paredes spent so much work last year learning how to play 3d base. And Wade said that Paredes is his starting 3d baseman right now.
For what it’s worth, it appears that Paredes has been playing 2d base in the DWL. That’s not surprising if there are 3d baseman on that team’s roster.

And when you consider he was playing 2nd in Corpus befor Altuve got promoted it makes
sense that if hes on a team w/ ML 3rd basemen stick him at 2nd where hes played before.
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
I don’t know, I see those comments as Wade preparing the fans for a disappointing offseason, as McT is pretty much a puppet of the front office. If they really do think there’s a chance Paredes can play a passable shortstop, I say go for it. The main disappointment there is that if they don’t sign another SS then Sanchez is all but guaranteed a spot on the roster. This is the roster I’d like to see:
CF Schafer/Bourgeois
2B Altuve
LF Martinez/Shuck
1B Lee/Wallace
RF Bogusevic
3B Johnson
SS Paredes/Downs
C Castro/Quintero
While that severely limits the defense, it allows for the most capable array of hitters.
Sigh…if they don’t add a middle infielder we’re screwed.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Astros revisit trade talks with the Rockies for Wandy. Is this something that Wade could do before the ownership transfer goes down.
I know that some people have lost faith in Wades trading ability after the anatomy of a trade article, but if his asking price was Rosario, Pomeranz, and the contract then good for him.
by conroestro on Oct 30, 2011 11:45 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
I don’t put much faith in the asking price he gave Colorado in the summer. He usually starts off with a high asking price (e.g., Minor and Delgado in the Bourn trade), and then settles for a much lower trade price. The advantage of an off-season trade is that a GM can try to get a broad bidding war going. But will Wade do that…or will he just zero in one trading partner, which seems like his pattern?
by clack on Oct 30, 2011 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
True. Good points. He does seem to zero in on one partner and only deal with them.

Me & Sean
Have been kicking tyres on Tim Wheeler since June. Kick in $8m and I’ll buy high on Tim Wheeler and low on Christian Friedrich. Possibly kick in a third ‘project-type’ prospect.

If we do trade Wandy
I know there’s a lot of debate on his worth, but could we see an organizations top 5 player in return or would we have to pay a lot on his contract?
by Its Gonna Happen on Oct 30, 2011 4:39 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
That would be a fair deal.
I really like Bettis, but who knows.

We could have had him had we just signed him back in ’07
by Woodlands'stro on Oct 30, 2011 5:33 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Yeah, would have been nice. Plus he was dominating the competition that college players are supposed to dominate. Next year will be a big year for the guy.

I'd like this deal
Wheeler projects more as a corner outfielder even though he’s played CF in the minors.
So…
2B Altuve (RH)
LF Martinez (RH)
1B Singleton (LH)
CF Springer (RH)
RF Wheeler (LH)
DH Nash (RH)
3B Paredes (SH)
SS Villar (SH)
C Castro (LH)
1 Cosart
2 Appel?
3. Norris
4 Clemens
5 Lyles / Hallock / Armstrong / …?
One thing that concerns me is that if we trade Wandy away, what’s going to become of the depth of starting pitchers in the minors? Our offense projects to be pretty good in the future, but our rotation is looking pretty weak. We really need pitching and once we don’t have anybody else to trade away for pitching, we’re going to have to sign FA’s or even trade away prospects to get a staff ace. Just something to think about.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
Not competitive until 2014 at this pace...
Likely rosters by year:
2012:
Schafer
Altuve
Martinez
Lee
Bogusevic
Paredes
Sanchez
Castro
Bench: Q, Bourgeois, Downs, Johnson, Shuck
Rotation: Myers, Norris, Happ, Sosa, Lyles
Bullpen: Escalona, Lyon, Abreu, Carpenter, F Rod, Lopez, Melancon
2013:
Schafer
Altuve
Martinez
Singleton
Bogusevic
Paredes
Villar
Castro
Bench: Bourgeois, Shuck, Downs, C Wallace, Mier
Rotation: Norris, Lyles, Cosart, Clemens, Happ
Bullpen: Kuechel, Aneury, Abreu, Carpenter, F Rod, Lopez, Melancon
2014:
DeShields CF
Altuve 2B

Santana LF
Paredes 3B
Castro C
Villar SS
Rotation: Cosart, Norris, Lyles, Foltynewicz, Armstrong
Bullpen: Clemens, Keuchel, Aneury, Abreu, De Leon, Melancon, Stoffel
We’ve come a long way, but there’s a long road ahead. Stay the course.
Bench: Bourgeois, Downs, Wallace, Mier, Martinez

What happened to Oberholtzer?
by Woodlands'stro on Oct 30, 2011 9:13 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Waht about Austin Wates?
"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"
I hope to be proven wrong this coming year, but at this point I don’t see Wates being an everyday player. He certainly could slot in as a bench OF instead of Bourgeois or Shuck, but I don’t think he’ll have the defense for center or the power for the corners.
by Snake Diggity on Oct 31, 2011 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions
Of course there’s tons of subjectivity at this point and my own prediction would differ from day to day. Oberholtzer projects as a #4 at this point, so he could be in there instead of Folty or Armstrong in 2014, or even instead of Clemens or Happ in 2013.

I saw Busta mention Appel up above, and it really wouldn’t hurt my feelings none if the Astros took a pitcher number 1 overall whether that be Appel or someone else, but for that to happen they should at least be part of the discussion as best player available.

Just saw this!
10:18 AM ET 10.30 | If new Sox general manager Ben Cherington wants someone who is familiar with the team and had a firm hand with the players when he was here, will Houston manager Brad Mills be considered? Mills has been part of a painful rebuilding the last two seasons in Houston, where an ownership change is also about to take place. “If it’s requested, we’ll deal with it as an organization,” said Astros president Tal Smith. “Brad is a terrific manager. We absolutely love the job he’s done for us.” But as of late last week, there had been no contact.

Get this.... Tony LaRussa announced his retirement.
That’s unexpected. I wonder if it changes the odds of Pujols returning to the Cardinals?
Dave Duncan would be an amazing pick up
Just look at what he did for the Cards bullpen over the season…blank check…
Pujols is worthy of owning the largest contract in baseball. Yankees and Red Sox don’t need him (doesn’t mean they’re not interested), Angels and Rangers might be able to afford him, Cards make the most sense but with Holliday’s big contract will they be able to meet his demands? If they do re-sign Pujols will they have to sell other pieces or just let their other FA’s go in the coming years?
