The guy crams his research so that he can find out that Bill Hall is the only hitter on the Astros who can cause him problems.

ya not speedy Bourn or Hunter Pence. I have a feeling Carlos Lee’s rating was down from his 2010 season.

That hurts me to the quick

A Commercial for a baseball TV Gameshowed how a high school music teacher won $1,000,000 for being the first person to pitch a perfect game on the machine once the season started.

He studied up, practiced , reviewed statistics etc for two weeks.

Then the killer . . .

He said that he figured his best chance to win was to have the pitcher Roy Halladay pitch against our mighty Houston Astros . It took three games tfor him to throw a perfect game against the Astros. The only batter he feared was was Bill Hall!

thinking about it now Bill Hall probably had a good rating from his 2010 season.

The choice of Halladay isn’t bad, though not creative. Lincecum or Lee might be better though.

Picking the best team against the worst team, on the surface, seems like a good idea. But it seems to me that you want to select a “bad team” with the lowest batting average, or even lowest OBP, since that bears most directly on a perfect game possibility. The Astros are a relatively good batting average team (top quarter of the NL), which means they are more likely to get a hit than the Padres, Giants, or Pirates, which are the teams with worst BA or OBP.

by clack on Oct 28, 2011 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he went with match-ups. I think part of it was playing within a franchise season. So you couldn’t just pick the Phils verse the twins, it had to be an actual game in a new season.

He did but that was the best match-up of a new season.

Intangibles reach a peak in the World Series, it seems. McCarver talked about Furcal’s intangibles. During the first game of the WS, McCarver had an orgasm over Michael Young’s intangibles. Early on in the post season, there were a bunch of articles comparing Michael Young to Derek Jeter and saying he should get into the Hall of Fame based on his intangibles. I notice that talk has died off since Young has had a brutal last few WS games on defense. I saw an article a couple of days ago where some baseball guy said that you need “money ballplayers and not moneyball players” when you’re in the World Series.

by clack on Oct 28, 2011 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

what’s that last statement supposed to mean?

Follow my ramblings on Twitter .

by Timothy De Block on Oct 28, 2011 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

He equated moneyball players with hitters trying to take a walk, and money ballplayers as hitters who are clutch and aren’t afraid to swing away in the big arena. He gave Kirby Puckett as an example of a money ballplayer but not a moneyball player. It was all pretty stupid and reflected a lack of understanding of “moneyball.”

by clack on Oct 28, 2011 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Ironically, in this game so far, 3 of the 5 runs that scored got on base via the walk.

Well, at least an interesting nickname. Camden Chat calls him “Tater Tot.”

Doesn’t seem like Orioles’ fans are broken up over losing him; from the same source:

Craig “Tater Tot” Tatum was claimed by the Astros, so he’ll be (not) mashing taters for another team next year.

Too much talent.

On their MLB roster…. and even after our trades this season they have about double the talent in their minors that we have in ours.

If you gave me the choice of three packages to take over a team pick a staff from top to bottom and have full control within a set budget…

a) Nolan Ryan/Andrew Friedman

b) Jon Daniels

c) Alex Anthopoulos

I would take option “b” every day of the week…

How drained to the Rangers have to feel right now?

6243 AB’s
1595.1 IP
188 regular and post season games…

All for nothing.

I am a bigger football fan than baseball but I personally believe that MLB has the most mentally emotionally draining affect on its players. So many games played and so many individual moments throughout the season during which one player can make a difference in the fate of his entire team… and even putting forth all your effort you can make a few miscues at the end that can render all your team has accomplished meaningless.

Now the question becomes will there be compensation?

There will likely be a new CBA in place very shortly… and if hard slotting becomes part of the draft then it has been suggested that draft pick compensation could be on the way out. Personally I hope not but it is a possibility.
