Max Ramirez or J.R. Towles?

Did anyone else notice Max Ramirez was removed from the Rangers' 40 man roster this past week?  He was quickly claimed by the Red Sox, which you can read about here, and I couldn't help but think "Man, what a shrewd move!  Where were the Astros on this?".

Well, I'm guessing the Astros weren't able to make a claim because the team designating the player for assignment gives priority to their league first (which in this case was the AL) before then opening the claim to teams in the other league.  (If I'm wrong on that, please feel free and correct me!)

Anyway, it's a moot point now, but if you were the Astros and Max Ramirez fell in your lap on waivers, would you remove J.R. Towles from the 40 man roster to sign him?  Ramirez posted a .298/.396/.476 line in the minors, but that hasn't translated to the majors so far.  Also, he's not really known as a good defender nor does he have a great arm.

Towles, as most on here know, showed flashes of brilliance as a late season call-up in 2007 but has struggled in limited time at the major league level ever since.  Do you the Astros should show more patience with him or is it time for the Astros to move on?

Who has the better chance of contributing at the major league level?  Who would you rather have on your team?

I would rather have Max

his ML OBP is 340 and JR’s recent MLB performance makes Max’s .217 career BA seem good.

Yes, you are right about waiver claims going to the team’s league first.

I don’t know if I would remove J.R. Towles from the 40 man for Ramirez (actually, I think there is a vacant postion on the 40 man now), but I would remove someone if I had to. I don’t see any harm in continuing to see what Towles can do. Sometimes catchers develop slower than other players, so who knows.

I always thought the Astros never gave Towles the opportunity to deserve, but I’m also not in the clubhouse or a scout, so maybe there was something there.

Just when you thought this story was over...

Now the Cubs have claimed Ramirez!

Details are a bit short, but it appears the Red Sox claimed Ramirez and then immediately tried to pass him through waivers again (since there were no spots available on the 40 man roster available). The Cubs, now with spots open on their 40 man roster after the Matt Garza trade, then made their claim.

It’s possible the Astros may have also wanted to make a claim (as I eluded to in the original post), but since the Cubs had a slightly worse record than Houston, they were able to make a claim first.

Who

was the young/youngish catcher we picked up off of waivers early in the offseason? I can’t remember his name. Will he be in AAA this season or will JR or both? As I recall I liked him, but I think I like Ramirez better.

Carlos Corporan. I like him.

I see him and Towles probably splitting time in AAA, although there really isn’t a surefire everyday catcher set for AA (Heath, Fixler, Hernandez, Curtis, and Esposito are possibilities), so one could end up in Corpus with the other the OKC guy.

Double A

I look to see Hernandez and Heath at Double-A. When the 2011 Season starts he still has part of a 50 game suspension to serve.
