Astros Weekend Minor League Recap
A few things have happened since the last post on Friday morning. First, Ben Heath has dominated in his limited playing time in Corpus. Timmy's head might explode from his man crush on Heath next season if he gets off to a hot start. The second is Tri-City's playoff situation.
Tri-City only won a game over this three day span but the playoff race in the Stedlar division of the New York-Penn League went down to yesterday. One of two things had to happen yesterday in order for Tri-City to win the division; Tri-City wins or Connecticut loses. Tri-City lost but luckily Connecticut did too in extra innings. This is a big step for the the system. The last Astros affiliated minor league team to make the playoffs was Class A-Advanced Salem in 2007. Tri-City last made the playoffs the year before in 2006. Coming into this season there were concerns that the Astros were at risk of losing some of our affiliations because we weren't placing enough talent on the rosters to compete and that in turn was forcing those teams to lose revenue from reduced ticket sales. Performing to this level shows that the Astros can put enough talent there to compete while still developing prospects. I'm very confident that these guys in Tri-City will move on to help Lancaster and Lexington both compete next season in the win/loss columns. Congratulations to the ValleyCats and good luck in the playoff game Tuesday!

Nash
Glad to see that Nash is mashing so far at Tri-City. Now, if we could just see him cut down on those K’s.
Will the real Shane Loux please stand up
9 innings of shut out ball this time ; drummed last time. Trying to pinpoint his abilty is like playing pin a tail on a donkey while wearing a blindfold .

Ross Seaton
We were so excited about him last year. What happened this year? Is it pitching in Lancaster?

Yeah
His home/road splits are drastic, but it’s more like he’s been terrible at home and just vanilla bad on the road.
To be fair, there were warning signs last season, in particular his low strikeout rate.
He’s still a prospect, mainly based on his projectability, but his stock is down and he really needs a good season next year.
Well you still have to consider his road splits as inflated too. The Cal league in general is a hitters league, the exact opposite of the Sally league which is a pitchers league. High Desert actually has a higher singles and doubles park factor than Lancaster while they have the same triples and home run factor. So, really you just can’t look at his road splits.
The thing I have to look at with Seaton is that he’s getting his velocity back up there. There have been reports that he’s getting it back up into the mid 90s but there are times he’s high 80s. So the potential is still there, but the consistency isn’t. It wouldn’t surprise me if the days he actually puts up good strikeout numbers are the days his velocity is up there. Another thing is that he improved GB% and his GO/AO from last year. Improvement is what has to be looked at when looking at Lancaster numbers.
