Baseball Beginnings » Strasburg’s Deal with the Devil Comes Due

This was an eye-opening article from John Klima. First, he makes the case for long-term scouting at the local level. In the article, he traces Stephen Strasburg's progress from a bad-body guy to the No. 1 overall pick. He also justifies his comparison of Strasburg to Brad Penny with the injuries.

It's a little startling to read such vehemence from him regarding hyped prospects. We all know what kind of hype machine followed Strasburg through his selection in the draft to his major league debut. It's not a new phenomenon, but Klima has such strong feelings against hyping prospects, it's a really good read and a good lesson for those of us who follow the minors. Scouting the Sally made a similar point about avoiding consensus scouting, but his felt more like it was about respect.

Klima also very subtly suggested that Strasburg's meteoric rise could have been due to some pharmaceutical enhancements. Make no mistake, that deal with the devil he talks about is partly about some sort of steroid. No one has said anything about this before, but we've reached a point in this era that I'm never surprised by suggestion of steroids. Will this catch on? Will other people run with Klima's suggestion? I'm not going to hazard an opinion either way, but I'm very surprised he was was bold enough to make the claim.

Reading Ensberg’s blog piece, I think it speaks highly of the Astros that they have had so many coaches at the minor and major league level who have gone on to other teams and earned the high respect of a guy like Ensberg.

Mike Hampton will be joining the D-Backs’ bullpen for the Astros series.

A few teams prove a team can draft 6 or more "stars" a year

Check out the top seven teams (Astros were not in the top 7)

1.Dodgers 13 Billingsley, Russell Martin, Broxton, Kemp, James Loney, and Carlos Santana.
2.Marlins 11 Hanley Ramirez, Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, and Dan Uggla
3.Angels 14 Howie Kendrick, Jered Weaver, and Kendry Morales
4.D’Backs 11 Upton, Stephen Drew, Carlos Quentin, Carlos Gonzales, and Mark Reynolds
5.Brewers 12 Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, Gallardo, Corey Hart, Alcides Escobar, Nelson Cruz
6.Twins 8 Francisco Liriano, Jason Kubel, Matt Garza, Denard Span
7.Red Sox 10 Jon Lester, Papelbon, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Clay Bucholz

Where did you get that list?

Hanley Ramirez came from the Red Sox system. Dan Uggla was drafted by the Diamondbacks.

by Timothy De Block on Sep 3, 2010 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

yes, only one of the Marlins (Josh Johnson) on the list was drafted by the Marlins. Ramirez acquired in trade from Red Sox, Uggla acquired as a Rule 5 pick, and Nolasco acquired in trade from the Cubs. Also Kendry Morales was not drafted because he was a Cuban defector. I would be hesitant to call all of those players “stars.”
