Why the 2011 Astros will be good
Webster's defines lackadaisical as lacking spirit, liveliness, or interest.
That sounds like the 2010 Astros up until the All Star Break. After the ASB, the impending trade deadline seemed to put a little bit of life into those that were rumored to be on the trading block. After all, everyone likes to be wanted by others and if you're a player wanting out of town and think you're being scouted, you'll want to put your best foot forward.
For the past several years, I think the "old, aging, veteran Astros" were just too experienced to be bothered with some of the little things that make a good ball club. I'm not blaming them as I would have probably been doing the same things that come with making millions of dollars and being held on a pedestal in hopes of bringing a Championship to Houston.
Speaking engagements, endorsements, financial planning, investements, cattle ranches, charity work, and the like start taking one's time as a player once you make it to the big leagues, especially if you're a perennial All Star.
- Who wants to be bothered with showing up at Spring Training early, especially when it's your 10th season and you've got a guaranteed contract and a guaranteed starting position?
- Why show up to Spring Training on time when you have a coaching staff that accepts your lame excuses about forgetting what day it started or the pilot of your private jet had an expired license or you're showing a bull at the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo?
- Who wants to work on their hitting skills in the off-season especially when there's 162 games, you're starting job is safe, and you know you'll get your timing eventually?
- Who wants to take those long bus rides in Spring Training to play a game when there's some young guys that need to pay their dues and get their work in?
Well, I think I can honestly say that the guys on the team right now could answer "I do" to every one of those questions (except Lee). Hardly anyone is guaranteed to make the team right now and nobody knows what's going to go down during free agency.
I think CJ, Castro, Sanchez, Hernandez, Wallace, Bogey, Bougeois, et al will be EXCITED about Spring Training and will be working their butts off in the off-season in order to be prepared for Spring Training to win a job.
I think Bourn and Pence will feed off of that excitement and come to Spring Training ready to play (I hear Pence has colored sliding glass doors at his Spring Training home now).
I think Kepp, Blum, Michaels will work hard and be ready in Spring Training since they have all these young guys trying to take their jobs.
I think the pitching staff is pretty solid as we've seen lately and I HOPE they're ready to go.
Mills now has a full year under his belt and should have a much better plan moving forward. I assume he was operating off what he has always seen done - now he knows what he'd like to do for his own reasons.
Carlos Lee is the only player who may still prefer to rope cattle, chill in Panama, and not have to worry about his job because of his contract. He's getting paid no matter what.
Take all the above into account, add a FA acquisition or two in the off-season, and that translates into an energetic team that wants to play in the Majors, is ready to play on Opening Day, and we won't have to endure another slow start that we've been accustomed to the past few years.
I think this team has a new attitude and the ability to go a long way next year and be very competetive.
What do you think?

It sure was nice to see them catch the Brewers yesterday in the standings. I’d like to see a strong finish and go into ST next year building off the momentum of a third-place finish in the NL Central. This year Baseball America picked them in the season preview issue to win 63 games and they’ve got a whole month of baseball left and have already just about reached that win total. After a miserable start, they’ve exceeded just about everyone’s expectations.
their record since June 1st, 45-37 is a good sign, and they have owned NL Central opponents, bar the Reds.
Given the horror show start to the season, they have recovered well, but need to play better outside their division in 2011. If Myers, Rodriguez, Happ and Norris can replicate what they’ve done over the last month over a full season, we’ll do ok.
Middle infield needs a bit of work during the winter.
The Astros and Brewers are 6 and 6 on the year.

I really agree with most of the above post but I really think Lee does care and will probabky be excited to come to spring training especially if he is moved to First base as he will need to work to improve defensively, as I dont think Wallace is quite ready yet to handle the Major league pitching talent just yet at the plate.
They need to make a free agent acquisition for Left Field. They shoudl go after a player who can provide 25 plus homers a year and can still run a bit as well and be in the under 30 age range so they can be signed to a long term contract with out breakign the pocketbook. They also need to look for a type A starting pitcher to go in the rotation. Figueroa is going to be 38 next season and his better years are behind him. The miriad of others that have gotten a shot have not impressed enough to try again, so they need another solid starter for a long term deal. someone young enough to build on for the next 4 years or so.
Here is a look at what I profect should be on the team next season with somwhat projected numers fro this year…

Now granted some of these players may not be in the mix or may be used for a trade to get ons eof the key parts to this puzzle, but there is a chance for this team to do some gtreat things in 2011 if you put the right pieces on this team.
additons
I did manage to leave off a couple of players fro my list
Chacin RP 1-3-0-4.88
Villar RP NO stats
Arias SP been injured all year
The thing to remember is the ages of these guys. Next year Moehler will be 39, Byrdak 37, Figueroa 37, Blum 38, and Lee will be 35. The rest of the team pretty much falls under the 32 and under catergory. Lee still has 2 years on his current contract so why not move him to first where he can and has played alittle in his carreer and find us a quality late 20’s type of OF with power and speed. IN addition to a starter in his late 20’s who could be had long term for only a couple of mill a year.
There are several players on this my list and still in the minors who could be used as trade bait to possibly work a deal like that for a young player with star talent. if the Astros pull the right strings this could be an exciting 2011.
You typically want to go for that young star outfielder when you’re ready to contend. The Astros while playing good ball now still have a ways to go before they’re competing again. Signing or trading for a player who is going to require an expensive contract does nothing to help this team in it’s current state.
The Astros are in rebuild mode, and will be in that mode for at least the next year or two maybe even more. Taking on a another big contract would be a step in the wrong direction for this organization.

I mostly agree, especially about not spending big this offseason, but if Houston is in the hunt next trade deadline, I wouldn’t be opposed to going out and getting a young all-star shortstop. I think there are enough high ceiling guys in the outfield on teh farm that it would be dumb to go buy a corner OF bat.

2011
next year looks good. i think carlos lee is ok. what you see is what you get. He will hit about 250 to 300…20 hrs…90 to 100 rbis… actually this yr is an off year for him. i think he gives good effort. if we are stuck with him, use him.. put him at 1b..have him bat 6th..Pitching staff is good. we could use and may get one big time starter…team has $$ to spend. infield is good…very adequate…pence and bourn are pluses… i wish mills had played bogosuvic more in lf the past few weeks…he looks good..bench is good..bourgeois and michaels, maybe downs…question…manzella??? good on D but not very good hitter…a vasquez is good answer at ss…ok D and good hitter…may have good starter in minors…? relief corps? we have lots of choices, a lot of guys have had an opp to show their stuff.. fa’s will be available in re pitching..and we have some trade bait…..and we have $$ to spend… magnus
