Last I checked, the astros were 22nd in ERA but 9th in runs allowed, quite a discrepancy. Does it mean we have an unusually strong defense, or an unusually poor range defense that causes fewer chances for the defense to make plays? Another way of looking at it is, we aren't allowing many runs, but allowing an unusually high percentage of them as earned runs. For this to be true, I would've thought that our team defense fielding pct would have to be quite high. However, it turns out to be just average ( 17th ). Any one have any analyses to offer? Also I'm curious if anyone has any numbers on how good our defense is at taking away runs ( via range, double-plays, etc. ) Naively, I would think we have a fairly strong defense at CF and RF, average everywhere else, but with a glaring range factor weakness in LF.
