Rerasoning for Wallace Not Playing?

I can tolerate the explanation that Wallace has been struggling and needs a breather, but it makes me nervous that again he sits against a LHP. I really hope our management realizes that he hits lefties well.

I realize that J Mike hits LHP’s better than RHP’s and has to play sometime, but Wallace is the future and his development is more important that giving J Mike optimal match ups. Sit Lee if J Mike needs to play, I don’t care.

I can’t see too many situations where Wallace should sit this year, ever.

Another possibility for Bud

Rather than a softer off-speed pitch, he could try to add a sinker to get an occasional groundball when guys are battling him and he can’t find an out pitch.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 7:31 PM CDT reply actions

What happened?

I’m not getting the game tonight.

by linkxmalon on Aug 19, 2010 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Bud caught Davis stealing

Sanchez dropped the throw and it trickled into the outfield allowing Davis to advance to third. Throw was harder than it needed to be, but it didn’t bounce or anything and obviously should have been caught.

Bud at 64 pitches already

Not good after yesterday’s extra inning adventure.

Can anyone tell me

What that disappearing double play looked like on the replay? Did Sanchez miss the bag?

Ugh.. 1-0 Mets

The runner advanced on a ground out and then scored on a ground out. That’s an Astros type of playing.

Given Sanchez' lack of range and arm...

he has to be making routine plays.

He failed to turn a DP last night.

He’s been a mess tonight.

Not to mention barely made a couple of routine plays.

by hardcap on Aug 19, 2010 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

I'm QUICKLY losing patience with Sanchez.

Very quickly.

He is aggravatingly slow and now, he’s making mistakes on routine plays.

by hardcap on Aug 19, 2010 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

Eh, Manzella

Probably haas an Angel Sanchez voodoo doll in the dugout. I would if I were him.

Bud has about twice the pitch count

compared to the Mets pitcher (40+ vs 80+). But the worst part is that the offense seems to be back to pre-Bagwell status.

Reliz Feliz!

Bud hasn't been sharp

but Sanchez is helping to extend innings.

We're getting one-hit by an AAAA pitcher

And made to look awfully stupid in the process.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 8:29 PM CDT reply actions

Norris has held them to two hits over six.

by megaera on Aug 19, 2010 8:43 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Proud of Bud making it through six

Obviously didn’t have his best stuff, and that mess with Sanchez and the umpires really blew up his pitch count. Good sign of maturity for him to be able to stay in the game and limit the damage despite those things.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

Is it just me

Or does Q get hit a lot on balls tipped off bats

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

Q gets hit a lot period

Foul tips off other hitters’ bats, foul tips off his own bat, backswings, getting slammed into by baserunners at home plate…

As JD said, “tougher than two dollar steak”.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes. And as even Mills noted earlier this season, Q gets a lot of catcher interference calls. He apparently sets up too close to the batter.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions

it’s probably more correct to say “too close to (sometimes inside) the batter box.”

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

ugh

Bud Norris hitting with the Stros down two runs, and him already over 100 pitches. Not a good move.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

Cy Misch retires 16 straight Astros.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 8:40 PM CDT reply actions

for goodness sake he’s only thrown 62 pitches through 6 IP…sigh

by linkxmalon on Aug 19, 2010 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Norris back out

This is another managerial mistake by Mills, regardless of what happens here.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 8:42 PM CDT reply actions

I think he displays some of the Nolan Ryan philosophy. I know Wade has spoken approvingly of how the Astros have been studying Ryan’s philosophy (which is basically that all young pitchers can pitch deep into games if they are stretched out to do so). I’m not saying I’m wild about Ryan’s concept in today’s game.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

that has to be started early though, in the minors. Not the majors.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Especially not with a guy who was already out for a month

With arm problems. Not to mention, a small-ish power pitcher who throws a ton of sliders…

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think I would call Norris small-ish in terms of his bulk.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

He does have some bulk which helps, but he’s still only 6 feet and doesn’t have the big frame you’d like. In any case, I would not ever put a pitcher with his profile out there when he is over 110 pitches. That’s the red flag zone.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

The pitch count right now doesn’t bother me. It does bother me that Norris has struggled through some tough innings. Now that he gets out of this inning quickly, I’m OK with it.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions

that’s playing with fire, unless Mills had someone ready to pull him in case there was trouble.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

the bullpen was up as the inning started.

The good news is, it gets him to the bullpen quicker.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m still rooting for Bud to make it as a starter though :-\

See what happens with Wallace out of the lineup

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

Now that I think about it, the only way Wallace get’s into the game is as a defensive replacement.

He’s shown the ability to hit a breaking ball at times this season. So hopefully he can adjust if this is the new book.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

the old Joe Morgan adage: “Throw breaking stuff to young hitters; throw fastballs to old veteran hitters.”

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Lopez's velocity is way down

Shouldn’t be surprising, but this is why I was kind of thinking they should send in Abad.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:05 PM CDT reply actions

Wilton Lopez reminds me of Alberto Arias when he was on a roll last season. Hopefully, the same thing doesn’t happen to him.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

Lopez is less wild

He actually has really good control, from what I’ve seen. But I know what you mean. That solid strikeout rate + lots of groundballs combination.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Arias had a nastier breaking pitch to go with his hard sinker. Lopez throws his hard sinker 80% of the time, and Arias threw his 60% of the time. But, yeah, I’m referring to the power sinker pitch that both throw and the combination of Ks and groundballs.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

That's true

I do like Lopez’s changeup he uses though. It has good sink on it too.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

yes, I’ve noticed that.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Very lazy passed ball by Quintero.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:08 PM CDT reply actions

Might even have been a strike

If Castro gets criticized for messing up difficult chances, let’s give Q his share of the blame too when he screws up one like this.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m actually less critical of Q now that he’s technically the backup catcher.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Someones been buttering up the catchers mitts

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:09 PM CDT reply actions

I wonder who will close

I would imagine Lyon, but he has been worked pretty hard and has been hittable lately.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

Lyon

If he wasn’t going to use Lyon then Lopez would of been saved for the 9th.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

What, no Chacon in the 9th?

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Quintero shows his tools in that at bat.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Admit it

You preferred the Jason Bourgeois hit more than the upcoming Michael Bourn bunt.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Aug 19, 2010 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, the hit was more fun. but Bourn adds a little suspense when he bunts, because he is so capable of beating the throw to 1st.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

With Bourns numbers against lefties I don’t have a problem with that strategy.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

It was a good play here

Tough lefty (Bourn is TERRIBLE against lefties), men on first and second with nobody out (good run expectancy if you advance them), and Bourn has a chance to get a hit or ROE on any bunt with his wheels.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Bourn

sac bunt…almost beats it out

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 19, 2010 9:22 PM CDT reply actions

If I were Mills, I would consider pulling Q and putting a faster runner on 3d.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:22 PM CDT reply actions

The choices are Wallace, Castro and Manzella

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

…or a starting pitcher. I would probably put Castro in. he has pretty good speed for a catcher. Manzella not a bad choice either.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

With the game being so close I imagine Mills is keeping extra innings in the back of his mind.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:28 PM CDT reply actions

Not fun when you can tell so easily that both batters in this situation are pressing (Sanchez and Pence).

he does it again for a swinging K.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions

what’s funny is he laid off the curveball at the same level.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I know the Astros want to win ball games

But Lopez and Lyon need to be unavailable tomorrow. No sense in increasing the risk for injury on two relievers in a lost season.

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:34 PM CDT reply actions

just ask Gervacio and Arias

by Timothy De Block on Aug 19, 2010 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I want to see more Abad and Melancon.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Goofy play ends the game

Hunter Pence has to slide to get a pop-up which falls in between Blum, Bourn, and Pence.

by OremLK on Aug 19, 2010 9:37 PM CDT reply actions

Pence wants to be dramatic with the catch of that little pop fly.

by clack on Aug 19, 2010 9:38 PM CDT reply actions

I haven’t been keeping up with the team as much lately.

I was wanting for Lindstrom to be eligible for the DL and completely missed that Berkman was on the DL. Even though I knew about it.

is this the feliz thing or something else?

by James Bailey on Aug 19, 2010 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

Manzella was called up to replace Feliz on the roster. Keppinger was put on the DL today because (according to Mills) he had difficulties when he was running in the outfield today. Hernandez replaces Keppinger.
