Question for Astros fans
My name is Matt Swartz, and I’m an author at Baseball Prospectus. I’m doing some research on the infield shift (where three infielders play on the right side of second base for a left-handed hitter), and the data is a bit hard to come by. Since I know what a great resource the SBNation blogs are, being a former writer at one myself, I thought that some of you could give me some help.
I am curious who has gotten shifted against on your team MOST of the time, AND who your team regularly has shifted against in your division over the last 18 years. To jog your memory I am listing the lefties and switch-hitters that your team has had in the last 18 years that have hit at least 20 home runs.
Thank you for your help.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Daryl Ward vs. the Astros, but my recollection is that the Astros usually put some kind of shift on for him. Berkman regularly received the shift treatment in the last couple of years. It seems like it is relatively recent that he has received a shift defense (perhaps last two or three years) because I don’t recall that it was a frequent occurrence for Berkman in the early part of the decade. Is it just me, or does it seem like the infield shift is used a lot more, and against more players, than used to be the case? I really can’t recall how teams played Carl Everett when he was with the Astros. I don’t recall the Astros putting a shift on for Beltran, nor do I recall that other teams used the shift on him when he was an Astros outfielder. But, then again, that has been a few years, so I can’t be sure.
I echo clack's sentiments RE: Berkman and the increase usage of the shift

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
