Source: Myers deal with Astros will be two-yr extension through 2012 with club option for '13. Option also will have vesting element.

Ken Rosenthal via Twitter - take this with a grain of salt, but it is the first actual bit of news we've gotten on the extension. McTaggart just tweeted that Myers is looking for a third year as a guarantee. I think these two reports explain why there has been no news, officially, on the deal since 2:30 PM.

McTaggart just tweeted that Myers is looking for three guaranteed

I take it that is why the deal hasn’t gone anywhere officially.

Wade gave Lyon and Matsui a three year deal…wtf?!?

by Timothy De Block on Jul 31, 2010 10:47 PM CDT reply actions

why would you do that?

by clack on Jul 31, 2010 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

put Lyon on waivers?

by clack on Jul 31, 2010 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

because he has

2 more years getting 5 million. if a team is willing to take him and give us anything, then the stros should pull the trigger. Lyon has pitched well, but if I can get anything for him then he is out of here.

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 31, 2010 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

The contract cost is minimal in the big scheme of things. Having him around also allows the Astros to trade Lindstrom if a good deal arises. I wouldn’t trade him as a salary dump but I would if the return was good.

by clack on Aug 1, 2010 6:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Capps netted Washington Ramos

Although this hurt less for the Twins because of who they have at catcher.

by AstroB on Aug 1, 2010 8:09 AM CDT up reply actions

i was never a fan of relievers

in my opinion you can pick them up anywhere. To me his contract is not necessary and someone can easily fill his void. With that said, there are teams that need relievers and might claim him. If I was GM, I would try to get a little something out of him, but if not, then just hand over the contract to that team…5 Million less a year is a nice amount to have off books

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 1, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

you think the Astros could dump

All of Lyon’s contract? Would be $10m+ off the books I guess.

by AstroB on Aug 1, 2010 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

well…it’s off the books over two two years, which isn’t that consequential in the grand scheme of things. One thing that bugs me is that people make way too much out of Lyon’s contract. It’s not significant on an annual basis to have much impact on roster construction. Suppose that Lindstrom becomes very valuable and could be traded for a huge bounty in the future. If you keep Lyon, the front office has more willingness to make the Lindstrom trade, because they know they have someone they can plug in with experience at the closer position.

by clack on Aug 1, 2010 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand your view

I just don’t think of it that way. I am very anti relievers (which is not so great as a stros fan). I think really any pitcher can be plugged in and pitch in relief. to me a 2 yr 10 million contract for relief pitcher that isn’t your closer is kinda ridiculous. But yes, if it means trading lindstrom then I can understand.

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 1, 2010 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t be opposed to a 3 year deal. I’d prefer 2 and an option but as long as the money isnt too bad then 3 is fine with me

by Astrosws20 on Jul 31, 2010 10:54 PM CDT reply actions

same here

Im not sure if people remember, but if he struggles in a few years he can go to pen where he was a solid reliever and closer

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 31, 2010 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

The value of extending him, to me

Is having him as an anchor as the young guys adjust at the big league level. I don’t see why Wade would extend Myers for only two seasons, unless he thinks this battleship is going to turn a lot quicker than everyone else. Whatever the option escalator is, like all options escalators, I am sure it’s stupidly easy to hit. So why not just give him the three years, and put a team only option on the fourth. That way Wade has some flexibility to adjust to how the battle ship fairs on rough seas. If having a back of the rotation innings eaters in 2014- it’s there. If not, pay him two million 2014 dollars and tell him bon voyage.

From my perspective at least there’s 2 reasons why the option is a good idea.
1. The option is probably based on innings so Wade is protecting us in case Myers gets injured.
2. Myers is having a career year and will likely get more money than I or any of us would want to give him. He likely won’t have another year like this year if I had to guess so its always nice to at least give yourself some protection when signing someone who might have already hit their ceiling year

by Astrosws20 on Aug 1, 2010 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

can the stros

sign him to an extension, place him on waivers, be claimed and trade him if the deal is right? If so, I would consider doing it. A team that might have a big injury in the rotation might have to bite and the stros can get a nice deal out of it…if they did though, it would not seem so loyal.

right

but I am asking if it is technically allowed?

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 1, 2010 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, maybe

I’m not sure if there is anything in the CBA about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was against the rules. Even if it’s not, I wouldn’t want the Astros to be that kind of organization.

I'm excited about our 2011 rotation

Sounds like it’ll play out as such:

Wandy
Myers
Paulino
Happ
Norris/Lyles/Keuchel

The offense could be dismal, with quite possibly no contribution coming out of the farm in that area until 2012, but I could easily see that starting rotation producing an average ERA under 4.00.

by OremLK on Aug 1, 2010 12:32 AM CDT reply actions

Well, I understand that the players aren’t different. But I’m hoping that Paulino and Norris will have adjusted more and will be better, and that Wandy will perform like Wandy all season. Plus, Lyles!

by OremLK on Aug 1, 2010 12:49 AM CDT up reply actions

maybe the Astros can pull a San Diego Padre

type of turnaround next year.
Our rotation looks strong just as the Padre’s do, and both teams have bad offenses. Although the Pads do have Adrian Gonzo and Ludwick now.

Perhaps

Wallace can turn out to be our ‘hitting machine’.

yeah, I like the shape of that rotation. I don’t like the idea of using Lyles in the majors next season (other than possibly a short taste in September), but otherwise it’s a good plan.

by clack on Aug 1, 2010 6:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m with you on Lyles not needing to be installed into the rotation at any point next season until September. There’s no reason to rush his development nor start his arbitration clock early. He had a little hiccup with his July performance so he’s showing he still has things to work on and develop. I’d much rather him work on those things in the minors than the majors. It’s easier for him to develop his pitches in the minors. Like refining his curve and tweaking his FB. His changeup is already solid. His cutter/slider probably needs some work but in time could really turn into a quality pitch.

by Subber10 on Aug 1, 2010 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

I’d tend to agree, but I think he will be used whatever we may want. The Astros will want to show off their top prospect, and there likely won’t be better options (performance-wise) for a sixth starter to call up in case of injury.

by OremLK on Aug 1, 2010 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

During the game yesterday Wade said that there is no reason to rush Lyles up to Houston. They are very happy with him and don’t want to rush him up with him only being 19.

I'm concerned

about Paulino
Sounds like they’ve just shut him down for 2010, but it doesn’t bode well.

by AstroB on Aug 1, 2010 8:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m not sure how serious it is. Chronicle notes said that Paulino feels that everything is going well and he is optimistic he will pitch before the season is over. That quote doesn’t make it seem like the movement to the 60 day disabled list is caused by any kind of relapse in his injury condition. It could be that moving Paulino to the 60 day disabled list is all about saving room on the 40 man roster at a time that Wallace and Mellancon are added to the 40 man roster. Even though Oswalt and Berkman are removed, the Astros probably want to keep space open for other additions to the 40 man. Paulino no longer counts toward the 40 man roster if he is put on the 60 day DL, and that gives the Astros more roster flexibility.

But I agree with you that we need to keep a close eye on Paulino’s condition.

After listening to Wade during the game yesterday I seriously doubt Lyles and Keuchel see the field at MMP before 2012.

Still nothing official on Brett Myers, who agreed to terms on a multiyear deal. He’s taken parts of a physical.

The contract is guaranteed for 2011 and 2012 & carries a 2013 club option that could become vested through Myers’ 2012 performance.

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 1, 2010 12:50 PM CDT reply actions

The 2-yr guaranteed value, incl. buyout on option yr, guarantees $21 mill. If the contract carries through ’13, it will guarantee $28 mill.

The pact also contains additional performance bonus potential that could raise the total value to $29.5 million.
