$11M for Gose (Worley is a grade C toss-in) doesn’t make sense at all, I agree.

Gose is a good prospect.

He’s not $11M good.

by OremLK on Jul 29, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Gose and Singleton would be great but I would prefer a pitcher like Colvin instead.

by Subber10 on Jul 29, 2010 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Oswalt’s got something like just under $6M this year left, and $16M next year and what is supposed to now be a $3M buyout. That’s a total of $25M. That means Phils pay him around $3M this year, $11M next year and no buyout, off him arbitration, which he’ll decline and they’ll net 2 picks.

I can’t see how it’s a win for the Astros without Singleton.

Oswalt's Arbitration

I doubt the Phillies offer Oswalt arbitration. He might accept and get 16mill+ for that year. And they can’t afford a 16 mill Oswalt and afford to offer contract extensions to their core players.

gose, happ and worley sounds like the worst trade ever. Happ isnt going to be a great pitcher, worley has potential, and Gose is hitting .263 in A ball with over 100 strikeouts, i dont care how fast you are, if you dont get on base or put the ball in play, it doesnt matter.

We need singleton. The End.

by Bacasillas on Jul 29, 2010 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Even if it’s Happ, Gose, and Worley, I don’t think they traded him for the sake of trading him. I think it’s likely they are legitimately very high on Happ and Gose. Wade probably thinks Happ is a legitimate future no. 2 starter.

I don’t. Happ is a middle rotation guy, Gose is a good prospect but too raw for blue chip status and not in any area of organizational need, Worley is a grade C throw-in.

Not a believer in Happ, but I think Gose could be a really good player. He’s got a great arm, great speed and he’s not a little guy. He’s 6-foot-1 and strong. The strikeouts are a concern, but he’s holding his own as a 19-year-old in the Florida State League. Hitting from left side will boost his average some.

i think many people will be disappointed if we dont get singleton…but from day 1 we heard he was untouchable…so not such a surprise…just growing hope after reports that he might be in the deal…it was all false hope

This is the way of the Astros. I’m not giddy over Happ, but he’ll be a decent starter while we rebuild.

I would've rather had

Drayton and Ed try to make another push to make the Stros competitive in 2011 than make this deal. This just stinks of an organization not knowing what it’s doing.

Villar is a SICK athlete with a cannon arm and good range. No power, needs to stay on top of the ball better, but he’s a solid prospect

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 29, 2010 2:13 PM CDT reply actions

Look, at least we got guys with upside.

These two are not blue chip prospects, but they could easily develop into them over the next year or three. More to come in my article.

Getting Villar is MUCH better than getting Worley, in my opinion.

Addressing needs

I was hoping this trade would address at least a few of our needs for the rebuilding process. Instead it seems as if more questions are raised than answered. On the plus side, at least Villar could become a solid SS is Mier is a bust.

by Aging Dominican on Jul 29, 2010 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions

What I take from this....

Is that we didn’t get a single player that can hit. Awesome

by baggs on Jul 29, 2010 2:24 PM CDT reply actions

in this day and age

speedy outfielders with good arms who can stick at center are very valuable, say if Houston decides it wants to trade for a high calibur player. In these early years of Wade’s regime, he needs to concentrate on acquiring value over position. Looks like Ed procurred a major league ready pitcher and the two best value options, one being a SS and another being a Center Fielder. Not a great deal, but it could have been worse. Ed Wade may have bit the pillow in this one, but time will only tell.

Phillz fan here

And I hate to see Happ leave however he’s going to be 28 at the end of the year and his upside keeps getting smaller and smaller.

The prospects are great prospects. I don’t think that eithor of them has come anywhere close to what they could be. I know one has some Errors issues but with Minor League fields conditions it’s expected to have a few more.

The 11 Mil was highway robbery when you look at it I think it’s gona cost the Phillz 5.5 mil over the next 2 years. So 11 milllion for a borderline Ace for 18 months in this market is unheard of.

The Phillz rotation now consists of Roy (Doc) Halladay, Roy (Wyatt) Oswalt, Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton, and Kyle Kendrick. as far as playoffs are conserned I don’t think anyone can hang with that.

RAJ did give away Cliff Lee

However I asked TGP the question is RAJ still in the fire, he got 3 AA / AAA prospects for Cliff Lee and gets Halladay for less that what was recieved for Lee, Then gets Oswalt +11 Mil for less than he paid for Halladay.

Sounds to me like there may be some type of greater plan here.

by sowhatifitisasportste on Jul 29, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Before he gives Raul Ibanez a ton of money, pays way too much for Ryan Howard who is on his way through 30, trades a more economical Cliff Lee and trades other prospects for another expensive starter he already had. Ruben loves to spend the money.

by SteveBartman_MVP on Jul 29, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Phillz have sold out the last 80+ home games so, the money is there and, if spending the money keeps fans in the stands then he’s making the right moves.

National reporters bashed Houston for asking too much(because they wanted to see the trade happen for their ratings) and now they will undoubtedly pile on and let the world know how badly we got fleeced. We should have gotten Singleton out of this deal and I think Wade and Drayton gave in to the pressure of the situation and talk of national reporters. Happ is 28 and a #4. Villar can’t field or bat. Gose has decent upside. Gave away $11mil. No Singleton. Next headline should be “Drayton sells team and Wade is fired by new owner”

Can't believe I'm about say this

but don’t judge Wade just yet. If these young players pan out (whicj is most likely 2-3yrs away) then this trade was a success. If Arnsberg (who turned Halladay around) helps Happ become a front end of rotation things have worked out, especially since 4.5 yrs younger than Oswalt and under team control til 2014. I know its alot of ifs here but you never know. And if these guys do pan out along with all the young toolsy players already in the system, then having all these talented young guys in good for the franchise.

Outside looking in

It seems like a solid move to the future I don’t know what your farm looks like however if there is a player or 2 ready to come up next year + these 2 guys with the right coaching could become solid starters. Happ has not had his best year yet. I Expect him to pitch well for the next 6 years or so.

I really like this deal if

we sell high on Michael Bourn knowing he’s getting closer to thirty and may never be as valuable as now. He may win back to back gold gloves in Center Field. I bet we could get an impact starting pitcher for him and move up one of Austin or Gose on the fast track to play Center for Houston.

Possibly keep the one of Gose and Austin that profiles to have a higher ceiling in the minors to develop into the mainstay at center for years to come. Best case senario pipe dreamola.
