if we giving 11 million and oswalt not having 2012 option picked up, singleton must be in deal
by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 29, 2010 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions
$11M for Gose (Worley is a grade C toss-in) doesn’t make sense at all, I agree.
Gose is a good prospect.
He’s not $11M good.
Oswalt’s got something like just under $6M this year left, and $16M next year and what is supposed to now be a $3M buyout. That’s a total of $25M. That means Phils pay him around $3M this year, $11M next year and no buyout, off him arbitration, which he’ll decline and they’ll net 2 picks.
I can’t see how it’s a win for the Astros without Singleton.

gose, happ and worley sounds like the worst trade ever. Happ isnt going to be a great pitcher, worley has potential, and Gose is hitting .263 in A ball with over 100 strikeouts, i dont care how fast you are, if you dont get on base or put the ball in play, it doesnt matter.
We need singleton. The End.
Singleton needs to be in this deal.
Imagine a line up of…
Bourn
DD jr
Ovando
Singleton
JD Martinez
Johnson
Meir
Castro
in 2012 or 2013. I like it!
Oh yeah
Meh, I know Pence is Mclane’s guy. But with Ovando, Martinez, and DD jr (who will probably be in CF when Bourn leaves) I don’t see any room for him.
I see it as
Bourn – CF
DD Jr – 2b
Ovando – LF
Singleton – 1b
Pence – RF

Yes.

Not that this means a damn thing...but
@meechone Singleton is in the lineup for Lakewood. It’s Happ, Gose, and Worley.
The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
Damnit...
Its one thing to trade Roy to rebuild. But to trade Roy for the sake of trading him was a bad move. We probably could have gotten a better deal in the offseason.
Even if it’s Happ, Gose, and Worley, I don’t think they traded him for the sake of trading him. I think it’s likely they are legitimately very high on Happ and Gose. Wade probably thinks Happ is a legitimate future no. 2 starter.
Meh
Still don’t like it. This team’s Achilles heal has been offense for better part of a decade now. We have yet to even address that at all.
Or...
Perhaps Wade got confused and thought he was brokering the deal for Philly.

Yeah, I didn't say I agreed
I don’t. Happ is a middle rotation guy, Gose is a good prospect but too raw for blue chip status and not in any area of organizational need, Worley is a grade C throw-in.

Looks like he has Happ and Gose and the latest report, Worley and Happ in the previous one.

Not a believer in Happ, but I think Gose could be a really good player. He’s got a great arm, great speed and he’s not a little guy. He’s 6-foot-1 and strong. Was it better than what Arizona got for Haren?
by BrewCongdon-GTA on Jul 29, 2010 2:24 PM CDT reply actions
When you factor in the money we sent
It’s probably about the same.
But we got better players, though.
What I take from this....
Is that we didn’t get a single player that can hit. Awesome
in this day and age
speedy outfielders with good arms who can stick at center are very valuable, say if Houston decides it wants to trade for a high calibur player. In these early years of Wade’s regime, he needs to concentrate on acquiring value over position. Looks like Ed procurred a major league ready pitcher and the two best value options, one being a SS and another being a Center Fielder. Not a great deal, but it could have been worse. Ed Wade may have bit the pillow in this one, but time will only tell.

pillowing biting is for bad people in prison who can’t defend themselves.

According to Churchhill and Sprow we didn’t even receive on of their TOP 6 prospects in return. Plus we paid 11 mill.
:( sucks nobody overpaid from the outset. Maybe these kids will pan out eventually. The tools are there.

Jonathan Villar 42 errors in 99 games this season
and defense is his strong suit??
Not promising.

He’s just a kid. There are a slew of above average to good fielders who slipped up in A ball. Didn’t Jeter have a ton? He’s not a great SS but he was good. He will be a liability there I’m guessing soon.

Could Jeter hit?

Jeter despite his gold gloves for a majority of his career was considered a below average defender.

I suppose there are worse ways to build a farm than acquiring a lot of athletes and hoping some of them pan out.
But when are we going to address the crippling lack of impact bats in our system?

Phillz fan here
And I hate to see Happ leave however he’s going to be 28 at the end of the year and his upside keeps getting smaller and smaller.
The prospects are great prospects. I don’t think that eithor of them has come anywhere close to what they could be. I know one has some Errors issues but with Minor League fields conditions it’s expected to have a few more.
The 11 Mil was highway robbery when you look at it I think it’s gona cost the Phillz 5.5 mil over the next 2 years. So 11 milllion for a borderline Ace for 18 months in this market is unheard of.
The Phillz rotation now consists of Roy (Doc) Halladay, Roy (Wyatt) Oswalt, Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton, and Kyle Kendrick. as far as playoffs are conserned I don’t think anyone can hang with that.

Congrats, and thank you for the insight. It must be comforting to know that there is at least one GM in the majors that is worse than Amaro.

Wait
RAJ did give away Cliff Lee
However I asked TGP the question is RAJ still in the fire, he got 3 AA / AAA prospects for Cliff Lee and gets Halladay for less that what was recieved for Lee, Then gets Oswalt +11 Mil for less than he paid for Halladay.
Sounds to me like there may be some type of greater plan here.

Before he gives Raul Ibanez a ton of money, pays way too much for Ryan Howard who is on his way through 30, trades a more economical Cliff Lee and trades other prospects for another expensive starter he already had. Ruben loves to spend the money.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Jul 29, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions
Phillz have sold out the last 80+ home games so, the money is there and, if spending the money keeps fans in the stands then he’s making the right moves.

When you boo Roy for the first time, and he implodes, we will see how awesome this trade is. If Roy has even ever been booed in Houston, I’m sure I could count the number of times on one hand. Doubt he has.
by SteveBartman_MVP on Jul 29, 2010 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions
well jury’s out on that… I think we did ok but you all got more than we got for Cliff Lee:
Happ>Aumont (now at least)
Gose>Gillies
Villar>Ramirez
Plus, you all have been very cool to visiting Phils fans – CLASS ACT ASTROS FANS. You probably do deserve better than Ed Wade.
If the deal Ken Rosenthal reported is accurate...
Philly gets: Oswalt + 11 million
Houston gets: J.A. Happ, Anthony Gose, and Jonathan Villar.
The Astros just got hosed.
Just Oswalt
for those 3 is borderline but the 11 million makes it a joke.

My understanding was..
Adding money in a deal nets better prospects. I guess everybody but Ed Wade and Drayton McLane understand this. I wasn’t so down on the GM before, but if this deal goes down this way then he really is a complete jacka**.
My understanding
was that the 11 million was for Singleton. Why the hell are you paying to get rid of the face of your franchice?!

National reporters bashed Houston for asking too much(because they wanted to see the trade happen for their ratings) and now they will undoubtedly pile on and let the world know how badly we got fleeced. We should have gotten Singleton out of this deal and I think Wade and Drayton gave in to the pressure of the situation and talk of national reporters. Happ is 28 and a #4. Villar can’t field or bat. Gose has decent upside. Gave away $11mil. No Singleton. Next headline should be “Drayton sells team and Wade is fired by new owner”

Can't believe I'm about say this
but don’t judge Wade just yet. If these young players pan out (whicj is most likely 2-3yrs away) then this trade was a success. If Arnsberg (who turned Halladay around) helps Happ become a front end of rotation things have worked out, especially since 4.5 yrs younger than Oswalt and under team control til 2014. I know its alot of ifs here but you never know. And if these guys do pan out along with all the young toolsy players already in the system, then having all these talented young guys in good for the franchise.
I agree
and I realize I need to do my best sifting through the BS the media will unveil calling it a heist or whatever.

Outside looking in
It seems like a solid move to the future I don’t know what your farm looks like however if there is a player or 2 ready to come up next year + these 2 guys with the right coaching could become solid starters. Happ has not had his best year yet. I Expect him to pitch well for the next 6 years or so.

Justice on MLBN
Astros got salary relief, a comparable, credible pitcher in J.A. Happ, and a couple of prospects, so all in all they did ok.
It's pretty easy to get salary relief..
When you spend $11M..
just an fyi to the front office
I am also gladly accepting handouts in the form of MILLIONS of dollars.
(worth a shot)
I really like this deal if
we sell high on Michael Bourn knowing he’s getting closer to thirty and may never be as valuable as now. He may win back to back gold gloves in Center Field. I bet we could get an impact starting pitcher for him and move up one of Austin or Gose on the fast track to play Center for Houston.
Possibly keep the one of Gose and Austin that profiles to have a higher ceiling in the minors to develop into the mainstay at center for years to come. Best case senario pipe dreamola.
