Blum said he’d be ready for rehab in a week. Manzella will be back not long after. So unless there is a trade (and perhaps even if there is one), there will be some picking and choosing going on between Sanchez, Manzella, and Hernandez.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 7:05 PM CDT reply actions

Same here

My current prediction:

Keppinger gets traded, Feliz and Hernandez placed on waivers, Sanchez continues to start at shortstop, Manzella and Blum playing utility roles, with the two of them and Bourgeois competing for a starting job at 2B.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I have a feeling Hernandez sticks around.

by Timothy De Block on Jul 26, 2010 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

he looked good defensively behind Wandy yesterday

by AstroB on Jul 26, 2010 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

He looked good, but not as good as Manzella (slow footspeed), and he hasn’t shown anything with the bat yet. If he starts hitting, then I’ll go with “Manzella optioned”.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I would put Sanchez at 2nd

His DRS is -6
UZR/150 -24

That is in 144 innings coming in to today.

and having a bad night. Given up 3 R on 5 hits through 3innings.

by StrosSouth on Jul 26, 2010 7:58 PM CDT reply actions

He's had a bad July in general

Coming into tonight, 15 K : 10 BB, 6.35 ERA.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Hes still adjusting somewhat I think. Still really high on him though especially at his young age.

by StrosSouth on Jul 26, 2010 8:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, definitely

Too small a sample size to be worried.

Apparently three of the runs tonight are unearned, too. Only 1 ER allowed so far.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

well that explains things then. clemens is out so no pop in lineup and the D here is so so.

by StrosSouth on Jul 26, 2010 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m still excited to see if J.D. Martinez can be the middle of the order bat he was for Lexington. He’s had a slow start but his advanced stats suggest he’s been unlucky, hitting into a lot of lineouts.

He just hit a LD single.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Carlos Lee costs another run

Fumbling with the ball in the corner after taking forever to get to it.

Do we have a chart showing

how many doubles are hit to left, center and right at Minute Maid by the opposing teams?

It seems an inordinate amount of doubles to left considering the short fence.

Don’t think they can afford Oswalt. If the Astros get serious and put Myers on the market, maybe… Target Field suppresses homers well so far.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I shouldn’t say the first I’ve heard, but they’ve been very cool on him the last few days.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe they’re trying to be the team that sneaks in this time.

It’s already happened twice to them.

by Timothy De Block on Jul 26, 2010 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

That'd be nice

I doubt the Astros would do a deal without Montero. So if they sneak in, it’ll have to be him. But I’d love to get Montero.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's say the Yankees get Oswalt

What would their rotation be in the playoffs, assuming they get there and everybody is healthy?

Sabathia and Pettitte would surely get 2 spots.

They could move Hughes to the pen.

Would they just bump Burnett out knowing that they are committed to him for years?

by hardcap on Jul 26, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I’d guess CC/Pettitte/Oswalt/Burnett, since Hughes has a lot of recent experience in the pen, and they are trying to watch his innings.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed about Hughes...

but how often to teams use 4-man rotations versus 3?

Wouldn’t they be tempted to go back to CC in a Game 4?

If so, that would leave somebody out and it’s hard to see them doing that to a guy they are stuck with for years.

Lower level catchers are mashing this year

by Subber10 on Jul 26, 2010 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

The Greeneville Astros actually have three hitters

Above 1.000 OPS: Chris Wallace, Marcus Ndiffer, and Jhonny Medrano. All of them are old for their level and you would expect them to dominate hitters so much younger than they are, though.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

All three are going to be fun to watch as they move up.

by StrosSouth on Jul 26, 2010 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Wallace and Ndiffer are in their first season in the pros so it’s not really surprising they are at their level. Mid to late round college and undrafted guys are usually sent to rookie leagues. Theres not really room to move any of them up to Tri-City. Ben Heath is taking all the time at catcher and theres two other catchers there too. And theres about four guys who have spent time at 1B this season as well.

I fully expect to see Ben Heath and either Bubby Williams or Chris Wallace in Lancaster next year.

by Subber10 on Jul 26, 2010 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

One of his outs was a lineout too.

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Wade is disappointed DeShields hasn't signed yet

And he’s laying it on thick to Brian McTaggart:

“The only thing we have to do is point at the guy who crouches behind the plate at the Major League level, Jason Castro. He was signed in July of 2008 and is now in the big leagues. If Jason had waited until the very last moment to sign and didn’t have the benefit of those at-bats in July and August of 2008, it would be rather unlikely he would be catching at the big league level at this point.”

Drayton needs to quit being cheap and just the kids

by StrosSouth on Jul 26, 2010 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m thinking this also has something to do with Selig not Drayton. Selig hasn’t approved any overslot bonuses for 1st rounders yet. So this may be an issue with Selig not Drayton. Drayton could approve a 5 mil bonus and DDS would sign it but Selig wouldn’t until early to mid August.

by Subber10 on Jul 26, 2010 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Ive never cared for Selig myself. Need a CEO type to MLB not an owner of a team.

by StrosSouth on Jul 26, 2010 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Keep in mind

I believe only something like one out of ten of the top ten picks has signed so far. So it’s not like he’s any “worse” than the others in his range in the draft.

by Joe in Birmingham on Jul 26, 2010 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think much of the article. Wade has to make comments like that. He can’t say anything about whether or not they have made an agreement and have sent it to Selig because then he’ll have Selig on him. Of course he’s disappointed but anything overslot is going to take awhile.

by Subber10 on Jul 26, 2010 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Tyler Burnett went 2 for 5 with his second homeurn. He’s walked more than he’s struck out and if his power can showup more, he’ll be a serious 3B/1B prospect…I like him at this point.

by Subber10 on Jul 26, 2010 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

BB% seems to translate even better than K% which is what’s really exciting. At that rate he would be leading the majors, to give you an idea how rare it is. Two caveats… it’s really low level, so I know it’ll likely go down as he advances. And the sample size isn’t reliable yet.

With Sanchez on first Berkman hit a grounder caught by Lee at first moving towards second.

Lee planned to toss to second for the thied out , but Shortstop Castro nowehre near the base.

Lee turned and threw to the pitcher covering first , who was straddling first but must have thought he was in front of the base.

When he caught the ball the pithcer stepped back towards the dugout and was even farther from the base.

Berkman reached safely.

Long and short of it is: Take every rumor you hear with a grain of salt (duh, but it does bear repeating).
