Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

[Tal] Smith said he expects to make a deal because there is "considerable interest’’ in Oswalt, with "three or four’’ teams trying to make it happen. Smith felt by tomorrow things should begin to heat up.

Well, I hope something gets done today

Obsessively checking Twitter/MLB Trade Rumors/Google News twenty times a day is getting old.

Good it’s not just me.

I’m not going to lie, this past week has been less productive than others. But it’s not everyday The Astros are the head of big trades.

Truth

I’ve been going crazy the worst is probably during the game where twitter is refreshed several times an inning.

Trying to stay away from the computer =P

Tal Smith

What exactly does he do for the organization?

by StrosSouth on Jul 25, 2010 10:33 AM CDT reply actions

Is this sarcasm?

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

by Stephen Higdon on Jul 25, 2010 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

no. seriously what does he do? I hadnt heard of him until MMP was built.

by StrosSouth on Jul 25, 2010 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

He’s been extremely involved in the Astros organization for a very long time. Here’s his team bio.

As for what he does currently, on a day-to-day basis, that’s a bit tougher to discern. He’s the President of Baseball Operations, which doesn’t tell you much. But I do know that he was extremely involved in the design of MMP, and I’m pretty sure he’s the guy who handles all the Astros arbitration stuff.

Every time Richard Justice blames Tal Smith for the current state of the Astros and says he should be fired along with Ed Wade, I want to ask him to point out a single move that was Tal Smith’s. I think he’s probably an advisor to Ed Wade, and is probably involved in big picture stuff. It’s unclear how much he’s involved in the day-to-day.

by AstroAndy on Jul 25, 2010 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

with his background and success Im sure he knows of dealing going right now. After all these years I never knew he had soo much to do with this franchise other than having Tal’s Hill named after him.

by StrosSouth on Jul 25, 2010 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

As President of baseball operations, I would imagine his job is similar to what Nolan Ryan does with the Rangers. Or to put it another way, for those of the political bent, he’s kind of like the owner’s chief of staff.

Ken Rosenthal:
Still #Phillies #Cardinals #Dodgers on Oswalt. Player/$$$ issues with LA. Tough match with STL. If Phils move Werth they remain best positioned. But one exec says Phils’ goals in a Werth deal “seem to change by the day.”

Link

No mention of the Yankees, but I have to believe they have some interest, given they were scouting him last night and are definitely seeking pitching. They may be focusing on Haren right now, but if they lose out, I could see them jumping in.

by OremLK on Jul 25, 2010 10:38 AM CDT reply actions

Either that or the Dodgers

I just don’t want it to be St. Louis.

by OremLK on Jul 25, 2010 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

either trade would provide some much needed help in the system that would eventually reach the bigs

For Roy

comment fail...

I wanted to say for Roy’s sake I hope he goes to LA to reunite with Brad Ausmus.

Brad said he is retiring after this season recently. He’s made over $20 mil during his career so I think he will be just fine.

stros asked for kemp or loney

id be so fine with getting kemp…the guy is a top of the line OF

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 25, 2010 12:34 PM CDT reply actions

That's Rosenthal speculating again
The Astros are not enamored of the Cardinals’ young talent and are struggling to find a match with the Dodgers. They have asked the Dodgers for a major-league position player in a package for Oswalt, presumably outfielder Matt Kemp or first baseman James Loney.

Link

Bolded the most important word.

I don’t buy that the Astros asked for Matt Kemp. If they did, Wade is frickin’ insane. There’s highballing to start with a strong hand in negotiations… and then there’s demands so over-the-top they become insulting, and hearing the [click] as the other manager hangs up the phone on you.

We aren’t getting a return anywhere near that good, unfortunately. I would assume (hope) Wade realizes that.

by OremLK on Jul 25, 2010 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Im sure he’s posturing somewhat especially since Philly seems to be trying to flip Werth for prospects to pull off the Roy trade. You know stirring up the pot a bit to get what they want in return.

by StrosSouth on Jul 25, 2010 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Yuck, apparently MSNBC ran with the story as if it was fact, instead of mere speculation on the part of Rosenthal.

The quality of sports journalism in this country is terrible.

by OremLK on Jul 25, 2010 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

journalism is dead in this country. Period.

by StrosSouth on Jul 25, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

someone should get fired for that

this entire week seems to have consisted of different sites stealing news from other sites and changing it slightly so as to present it as ‘new’.

by AstroB on Jul 25, 2010 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

From my vantage point, Kemp would be untouchable. However, just for some contrary perspective, Kemp has been in the doghouse with the Dodgers. I have read some speculation that Colletti wants to dump him. Colletti at one point this season, called Kemp into his office and scolded him and then told the media about it. That didn’t make Kemp happy. So, it’s possible that there is some bad feelings there which might make Kemp available. Not likely, I know, but I’m not totally dismissive.

by clack on Jul 25, 2010 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I remember hearing that. But then the other day they said he is “their guy” (or something very similar to that) and they have no plans whatsoever to trade him.

Even if they offloaded Kemp I can’t imagine they would do it for Oswalt, especially in the middle of the season when he’s an important part of their roster. I would assume they’d want MLB-ready prospects, similarly cost-controlled good young players, or both.

by OremLK on Jul 25, 2010 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly. Kemp is a guy you trade for someone like Greinke, not Oswalt.

by seanbergmanrules on Jul 25, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Or maybe a swap of disgruntled outfielders

Something like sending him over to TB for B.J. Upton and a prospect.

by OremLK on Jul 25, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Enjoyed this BS on Philly SB page:

“Oswalt is a smallish right-hander (6’0”) so there are questions about longterm durability"

news to me

“The talent required to acquire Oswalt will likely not be as high as for Haren, as Oswalt is only signed through 2011.”

I think this flies in the logic of just about everything I’ve read on the entire trade-deadline. Who would give up more to get Haren than Oswalt?

by AstroB on Jul 25, 2010 1:00 PM CDT reply actions

Haren likely has a little bit more value than Oswalt because he is owed less money and is projected to perform similarly over the next couple years.

by OremLK on Jul 25, 2010 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno

Oswalt is money down the stretch. That’s got to add a lot of value during a pennant run.

by AstroB on Jul 25, 2010 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Hoping...

for a package with PHI/TB as well. I would love to get Reid Brignac and either Davis or Hellickson. And I’d throw in more money or another player to get Hellickson. Don’t the Rays need BP help. What about adding Lindstrom for the Rays to get Hellickson?

If we deal with the Dodgers I agree that Kemp is untradeable but do you think it’s possible that we could acquire Loney and Dee Gordon in a package? That would be great.
