But two sources said the Astros will need to be overwhelmed in order to move him, citing the team’s hope that he could be a foundation for future rotations.

this is for myers...
I am really beginning to like the idea of Trading Oswalt, Wandy, and Myers and Kepp by the deadline! 2012 here we come!

Myers is young and could be fairly productive for another five seasons. If he’s cost-effective, it makes sense to keep him around. At the very least, the Astros are making him seem like more than the off-brand starter they’re peddling and will command a bit more to get him. That’s smart. Let’s see if they still say this on July 30th.
this tells me that if the Astros have had feelers put out for Myers, they’ve been underwhelmed with the return they might get for him.
I get the feeling Myers wants to test the free agency waters. I could be wrong, its happened before.
who wouldn’t after the season he’s having, there will be several teams lining up for his services.

I hadn't thought about posturing
But I don’t think that Myers is the guy we want to anchor our rotation for the next four or five years. Moreover, I don’t know if we can get him to sign for something reasonable. I think he’ll find the conditions quite favorable on the open market in December.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

He may not be the best anchor, but really, Lyles will be the No. 1 guy. I think Myers could find a nice home in the No. 2-3 hole in the rotation while these young’uns come up.

I see Lyles more as a no. 2 at best, and Myers as the same. The team will definitely have a big void with Oswalt gone. I guess my hope is that Paulino can come back healthy, step up to his potential, and become a true frontline starter.
Thanks.
With all of that said, a rotation with Paulino, Lyles, Myers, Wandy, Keuchel, and Norris as a swingman/long reliever would be pretty deep, and might not need a true ace.
I’m thinking Lyles may have a Johan Santana-esque peak. He’s got the kind of breaking stuff and control to dominate like that. If his fastball will ever gain a little giddyup, I’d be pretty happy with him at the top of a rotation.

Compared to?
Young compared to whom? He’s 29. That’s essentially middle-aged for a starter.
He is a solid starter, but also a potential for off-the-field issues. He has 6 straight seasons over 2.0 with his K/BB which is very good especially since 5 of those have topped 2.5 and another 3 were 3.0 or better.
If he would agree to the $8 mil option for 2011 with whatever team he’s traded to, he should fetch the Stros something worthwhile. I wouldn’t be surprised if he fetched more than Oswalt if he was signed on for 2011. He’s half the cost.
This is referring to Brett Myers, to clarify
I definitely think they should trade him if they can get any top 100 prospect(s) in return.
If they can’t, they better push hard to extend him on a team-friendly deal. If he does leave in the off-season and we get nothing in return, at that point I will be furious. If they give him, say, a 3 year/$21M deal, I’m okay with that.
By the way, I’ve seen in other reports that Myers does like Houston and would be amenable to returning. So they may already know with reasonable certainty that he’s going to stay.
See I've been taking that as
Myers is cool with being traded and would love to come back to Houston.

If the Astros didn’t re-sign him, they may be able to offer arbitration and get a couple of draft picks in return. It depends on his future performance this year, but he is within range of becoming Type B.
Or he may be accept the option for next year (unlikely, but possible) in which case he could easily be a type A or B at the end of next season.

By demanding to be overwhelmed for Myers or Wandy, the front office keeps pitching off the market while they are shopping Roy O. around. Fewer options => higher price.
If a deal for Roy goes through, expect to see the demands for Myers and Wandy to sag a bit.
