Is moving Oswalt the best move?
Not sure?? Well neither am I. I would hate to see him go to the Cardinals or another team in our division. But if he brought back solid prospects it could be alright.....right??? I’m torn because I don’t want to the see the Astros go into 2011 with less talent than they have in 2010. Without Oswalt you lose your legitimate #1. Remember the Shane Reynolds years?? Want that again?? Do you REALLY think Drayton is going to go get us a solid ace?? If you do…..YOU SHOULDN’T DRINK THIS EARLY IN THE MORNING. If they decline Berkman’s option; how much worse is our offense? Do you think the Astros will go sign Jorge Cantu as a free agent?? They should…but will they??? The Astros are not a good team…that is obvious. But with the addition of a solid free agent here and there (here would be 3rd base and there would be 2nd base) we could be at least respectable and worth watching. The plan appears to be "We stink till 2012 and then we HOPE we don’t stink". Sure there may be a few kids in A and AA-ball coming up that might work out; but we don’t have Bagwell, Biggio, Gonzalez, Caminiti and Finley coming up to develop and turn into something special. We have a bunch of guys at the AAA level that no one wants. Trading off whatever veteran talent we have just doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. I would hope that the Astros would wise up, open up the pocketbook and add some real talent to what we have until these "Baby-stros" down in A-ball are ready.

The plan that I’ve seen from the Astros is to acquire ML-ready prospects, not guys who are a couple years off. That means they won’t be a few years off, but immediate contributors, joining guys like Castro, Johnson and Paulino this year and Lyles next year. It’s a step backwards, but you can’t step back too far from a 100-loss season with this group, right?
I'm good with......
ML-Ready prospects….especially since we don’t have any. I question Castro and Johnson. They aren’t terrible but not exactly setting the baseball world on fire. I’m also good with one step back..IF…we can take two forward in 2011.
yes
Look at the teams’ stats. How in the hell did they win 39? Best hitter has a .799 OPS. They only have 2 or 3 pitchers with pretty good seasons.
My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.
No more than 3 years, but with the upcoming payroll flexibility (shedding Oswalt, Berkman, and Lee) as well as the apparent near-readiness of the farm to start contributing, I’d say 2012 is a realistic point for Houston to be contending again. There’s a lot of ifs (spending free agent $‘s wisely and lots of young players panning out), but it’s realistic to expect a winning team by then.
201??????
I hope you are right. I find it hard to believe that Drayton is going to allow Ed Wade to REALLY spend in free agency. If they don’t pick up Berkmans option (and I wouldn’t)….who do we have at first??? God help us if it’s Geoff Blum. they MUST go find a bonafide 1B.
This week is critical
The next seven days will go a long way in determining the short term future of the Astros. Oswalt and Berkman must be moved for parts that will be beneficial no later than 2013. Next year is shot, just use the season to look at young players and hope you find a few good ones. Do some fine tuning in 2012 and assess what the team really needs and spend money on a free agent or two for 2013 and compete.
Perhaps Lee can be moved in the next year or two to an AL team for a pennant run – maybe. Asking for major league ready players now suggests to me that management thinks there is some hope for next season. I suggest the management should look at higher ceiling types in the minors (Shelby Miller of St Louis) and look toward 2013.

agree astros are not that far from being good. big problem is carlos lee. get some hitting in the lineup and berkman gets a lot better: he is 6th in walks in nl. keep starting pitching… it is ok. oswalt is a top top level pitcher. pick up his option now and pull him off the trade mkt. get rid of lee, maybe berkman, can they be coupled together for a minor leaguer who is 5 tool outfielder? manzella, in my opn is now trade bait..he is good, but new ss is better, both are cheap…johnson, keppinger, bourn, pence, and catchers are ok…need to fill in a couple of big guns at lb and lf..not free agents…get young guys…bullpen is ok in some ways.. some good pitchers there to build around…wandy, myers, norris, paulino, with oswalt at the top… pretty good group..and they have done good all year, even with a weak offense. good hitting 1b prospects are very available.. trade for a 2a or AAA who is ready. ditto with a 5 tool outfield prospect. magnus
I have to disagree with you about keeping Roy. This franchise MUST get younger rather than stay an aging team. If you trade Roy now you have the ability to pick up some young and talented and potential starters for the long term. This is in a rebuilding mode whether or not Drayton publicly states it. If anyone can rebuild this system (if given the freedom) is Ed Wade. Now I’m just going off of what he did Philly in building their ML team through the farm system and smart acquisitions. we just need to give him time and allow the the young guys on the farm time to develop into starting caliber players at the big league level.
