Astros Trade Kevin Cash to Red Sox
Per Alyson Footer, the Astros have traded catcher Kevin Cash to the Red Sox in exchange for quad-A infielder Angel Sanchez. Sanchez has a career .685 OPS in the minor leagues, and he's batting for .675 this season with the Red Sox AAA club. Going by TotalZone, he is a plus defensive shortstop and second baseman.
Footer says he will join the Astros in San Diego, which I suppose means he gets an active roster spot.
EDIT: Subber10 adds that Footer tweeted Yordany Ramirez has been removed from the 40-man roster, and a 25-man roster move will occur by tomorrow.
EDIT 2: SoxProspects.com has the following to say about Sanchez:
"Exceptional defensive player with a strong arm. Primarily plays shortstop but can also play second and third base. With the bat, Sanchez makes average contact and has doubles power. Good plate discipline. Average speed. Still has the potential to be a major league utility player, especially if he is able to repeat his offensive success from 2009."

She has tweeted that Yordany Ramirez was designated for assignment to make room for him on the 40 man roster. The corresponding 25 man roster move will happen tomorrow.
I guess the Red Sox just wanted to engage in a AAAA swap meet?
The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
Victor Martinez is injured
So they’re desperate for catching depth, and already like Kevin Cash because he was Wakefield’s personal catcher.
I can only hope
This finally brings Feliz’s release, or signifies a trade involving him, Blum, or Keppinger. But I have the feeling that it simply means Navarro is on his merry way back to Round Rock. What was wrong with Oswaldo, and why he couldn’t get much playing time, I don’t know.
if a 25 man roster move is happening...
what can it be? someone going on DL? im interested in this guy…

Wade interview
“Good solid steady defensive shortstop, makes all the plays.”
Says they were reluctant to let Cash go (for a little cash I assume) because it leaves them thin at the AAA level on catching, but when the Red Sox called back and said they were willing to trade Sanchez, it made sense.
So we have talked a few times about Yordany Ramirez being removed from the 40 man roster since he doesn’t provide any value there, and well now he finally has. Since he’s been designated for assignment, do you think there is a chance he turns down the assignment and opts for FA? That would leave an opening in CF at RR with Bogey being the best option and ideally, he’s better suited for RF. That could open the opportunity for Shuck to move up to RR!
didnt think of that...
i like this move more :)

I guess it makes sense (not sure how in the long run)
My guess: Ozzie Navarro wil be back in Round Rock for more experience.
I agree with OremLK that the Astros love Blum. He was the first player signed over the off season, almost immediately after the 2009 season ended. He’s done nothing to diminish his shining star. He’s the clutch bat off the bench. He’s played all four infield positions. He even comes close to being a leader on this team.
Sanchez probably is a better defensive shortstop than anyone on the team (not on DL) . His destiny hinges on his hitting.
If he performs, things gets interesting when Tommy Manzella returns.
As for Kevin Cash, it is a loss in case Q or Castro gets hurt, but otherwise he is expendable after the season.
Some concilation to Cash, of course, is he may be wearing a World Series Championship ring this time next year.

minor league splits this year for Sanchez
If you neutralize for park and luck, his line is pretty good:
0.294 0.364 0.357 0.721
He hits LHP better than RHP by .722 vs. .664 OPS.
sure why not
sanchez will obviously be an upgrade defensively from Blummer, and maybe he can provide a little offensive as well.
Wish you well Kevin Cash.
Jon Barry, playing like he was 20 years ago when he was a real offensive threat!.... Bill Worrell
I guess I’m just surprised we got something decent for Cash

Not that surprising to me. The Red Sox signed Cash as a free agent twice in the last 3 years, and the Yankees signed him as a free agent last year. The Red Sox obviously liked him, and they are really desperate at the catching position right now. The “good handler of pitchers” reputation creates a mild demand for his services, and his other negatives aren’t as big a problem for deep lineups like the Sox and Yankees.
