Cash gets a start

In a radio interview Brad Mills indicated Cash will catch Norris and Paulino. What he said was Cash is an experienced veteran guy who can help Norris and Paulino.

For what it’s worth, the word “Towles” was never mentioned in Milo’s interview of MIlls.

Brad Mills said the game last night have been different

if Astros scored in the first inning..

I’m almost screaming , “Then why didn’t you have Lee bunt Bourn home from third!?!”

(Okay _ I got that out of my system)

I wonder when was the last time that Lee ever attempted a bunt.

Good question

Don’t they practice at least one every day in batting practice?

by Joe in Birmingham on May 5, 2010 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m sure he has been through bunting practice in spring training. However, you often hear it stated by broadcasters that managers are reluctant to put a bunt on for certain sluggers because they have no experience bunting in a game. How true that is, I don’t know.

Some sluggers do have experience bunting. Berkman, Ensberg come to mind.

by clack on May 5, 2010 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

just out of curiosity…Carlos Lee’s last sac bunt was 9 years ago at the age of 25. He had 1 sac bunt each year, 1999-2001.

I think so.

Checking in

Still fired up about the Towles thing, but I’m hoping some baseball will help me get over that.

I have a feeling Cash is going to make Wade look like a genuis, at least for a little while. =/

by Timothy De Block on May 5, 2010 7:19 PM CDT reply actions

I’m also surprised Fangraphs wasn’t all over the Towles move, especially since it’s such a good opportunity to rip Wade. But maybe the Astros have fallen off the radar, in the media.

Awesome

more bad defense, Lee fails to catch flyball up against the left field porch.

Carlos Lee misplays ball at the wall, and it goes for a triple and run scored. He had a bead on it and it missed his glove.

by the way, you mentioned Ensberg’s piece about the day he was released in spring training. That was a good piece. I think it shows that Morgan is really improving as a writer. Perhaps he can become another Dierker. I remember back in the 80’s sometime, Dierker had a weekly column in the Chronicle. Not all that unusual; oftentimes the sports section would have columns by players or former players, but they weren’t written very well. And then I started reading a Dierker column about some historical baseball moment (don’t remember what exactly), and I said, “wow, this isn’t a former baseball player writing an article; this is a writer.”

I also hadn’t seen Ensberg’s critique of Ringolsby’s monstrosity about A-Rod. That was well done too.

by clack on May 5, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t doubt that Ensberg could be a good coach. But as for hitting coach? The way he kept changing his stance all the time would worry me as an indicator for his aptness for hitting coach.

need middle infielders and 3d baseman. The only current 2d baseman I can think of right now is Josh Barfield, and he has become a minor leaguer after a couple of years as a starter for the Padres/Indians. Paul Janish is from Houston and plays shorstop.

Mills said that when Carlos came to bat in the 9th, he kept looking at “Clarkie,” expecting a sac bunt. But Mills said, “no, we want him to swing the bat.” I guess that answers the earlier questions between Joe and I as to whether Lee thinks he can put down a sac bunt.

Was at the game with my dad

He spent a bunch of money on some of the best seats in the park, in the section in front of JD, Brownie, Milo and co., and one of his clients backed out, so I got to go at the last minute. My first time in that part of the ballpark… Sure is a lot nicer than the cheap seats! Cushions, wider seats, more foot room, and a waitstaff? Yes, please.

Great game to be at, too. When Lee hits the homer, my dad turns to me and says “about time”. At the same instant, his friend texts him and says the same exact two words.

by OremLK on May 5, 2010 10:28 PM CDT reply actions

I've sat there near the top row my first game ever.

Once I sat in the really fancy seats, about the fifih or sixth row behind home plate on the Astros side but stlil behind the screen. A buffet dinner underneath the stands before the game and free food and drinks during the game. Ran into Drayton and his wife on the way out, talked to him briefly. l said something briliant like “That loss hurt.” (loss to Braves)

A few days later I got in free with a group and sat way down the right field line. Different experience for sure. (loss to Expos with Roger Clemens pitching )
