Galloway: Rangers Would Have to Sweeten the Deal
This is in the "for what it's worth" category. Fort Worth Star Telegram reporter Randy Galloway discusses what it might take for the Rangers to get Oswalt. The bankruptcy issues are significant, but beyond that, he is skeptical that the Rangers can come up with the kind of young players the Astros want. He claims to have talked to a scout and "Houston sources." This kind of speculation may not be meaningful, but since he discusses specific players, you may find it interesting.

I don't know about this...
Okay, let’s assume Andrus and Feliz are untouchable. You’re telling me the Astros wouldn’t trade Oswalt for Justin Smoak and say, one of Tanner Scheppers or Martin Perez, just because Smoak has struggled a bit and Perez/Scheppers aren’t close enough to the majors? That’s ludicrous.
"Every time you go to that cook-off you get drunk as a poet on payday!"
Where do you put Smoak though?
This is also the team that passed on Smoak and instead selected Castro, now maybe that’s more about money, but it could also be an evaluation basis by the Astros.

Sounds like the Astros may be asking for Andrus and Scheppers. Add in Moreland as the third guy and I like that trade a lot. Don’t know if the Rangers ultimately make that deal, though.

I do think that the Astros will insist on ML players or near-ML ready players. McLane and Wade have both used that term. And I have come away convinced of that in looking at Wade’s trades in Philly. I think it’s a fair point that Smoak shouldn’t be dinged for his poor performance so far. But I agree that this is a risk when you call up young players…i.e., their value declines if they don’t start off well, compared to keeping them in AAA where they would be putting up good numbers. Also, we don’t know who Galloway may be talking to, and how much they really know about the Astros’ thinking. Tim’s point is also worth considering too.
I can't believe...
The Astros would be stupid enough to turn down any package including Martin Perez (the 17th best prospect in baseball according to Baseball America) and other bonafide prospects.
What perception is reality
This Oswalt speculation is crazy. Some people saying his salary is impossible to move or get value from unless it is all paid for. Then you have Steve Phillips saying he is worth Strasburg. This writer seems to think the Astro demands are 3 of the Rangers best young players, who would all be above or equal to anything the Astros have.
The anticipation is killing me. If the Astros could get Andrus or Smoak with anything else resembling a prospect I pull the trigger til the hammer goes click. That would be quite a return
My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.
Just a note:
Randy Galloway is generally considered to be an idiot outside of mainstream media in DFW. Probably should take whatever he says with a grain of salt.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
