BREAKING NEWS: Gervacio to DL, Lopez to Houston
Sammy Gervacio is headed the the disabled list with his strained rotator cuff and Wilton Lopez will be promoted to the big league club, according to Round Rock manager Mark Bombard. Brian McTaggart had me Tweet-beat with this story, but since I heard it directly from someone with the organization, I wanted to act like a real newsman. See what happens when I got to a game officially? I get the BIg Head...
Gervacio appeared to hurt his shoulder on a play where he fielded a ball on the infield and awkwardly threw to third, trying to get the lead runner. According to Astros manager Brad Mills, Gervacio hurt his arm on the pitch before the play at third and the play wasn't the cause.
Lopez pitched one inning against Corpus Christi, giving up a two-run double to Koby Clemens in the sixth. Lopez was pulled from the game at that point and Round Rock was forced to stretch Evan Englebrook out an extra inning and then bring Corpus Christi reliever Erick Abreu in to pitch for the Express in the ninth inning. Both of the runs Lopez gave up were unearned after Brian Bogusevic dropped a fly ball in right field.
Round Rock will add Jared Wells from the Hooks to take Lopez' spot.
What do you think? This move appears to have been made because Lopez is on the 40-man roster and Casey Daigle is not. Is Lopez the guy you wanted coming up at the first injury? Do you think Gervacio will be back soon?

Definetly a 40man roster concious move. Not really much choice besides him to be honest. I’m ok with it…but this will be short term. Its a strain and will likely take the 15 day DL period maybe longer if its bad. The rotator cuff muscles are very critical muscles especially for a pitcher. Which is why they put him on the DL so they can take their time with him. As well as have someone they can send down once Arias comes off the DL.
Gervacio probably out 2 to 12 weeks
plus whatever time to build up strength and control .
I posted this excerpt off the internet on the game thread but it seems appropriate here:
How long will the effects of the injury last?
To some extent, the time to fully recover from a rotator cuff injury is influenced by your dedication to your rehabilitation program. Typically, athletes require anywhere from 2-12 weeks of healing time, depending on the severity, before returning to their sport.

My wife teaches preschool. Here is a text she just sent me:
This has been the worst day. Everyone has gotten hurt and Stella peed her pants on the playground.
And here’s what I sent back:
Sounds like the last couple weeks for the Astros. Except they probably didn’t wet themselves.

This is definitely Comment of the Day, even if it wasn’t in the game thread.

Daigle is more appropriate as starting pitcher depth…at least that’s my thinking.
Lopez pitched very well in the spring. He hasn’t pitched well in the big leagues. But his pitches do seem to have a lot of movement.
Mills mentioned this move after the game. He did not think that Gervacio’s injury occurred on the throw to 3d…he thinks it probably occurred a couple of pitches before that.
Not to sound like a hater...
…but the 1-4 slots in the lineup, batting over the first 3 games went 8 for 46 (.174 BA). Just saying…… Keppinger is about the only bright spot so far.
It's early of course but only four Astros are battting over .250
2 of them are pitchers and one is a pinch hitter wirth two at bats:
1. B Myers .500
2. W Rodriguez .500
3. C Sullivan .500
4. J Keppinger .429

12. J Towles .125
13. C Johnson .000
14. J Michaels .000

Hope that Lopez...
…can hold the ball real funky in his full windup. The only thing that has made me smile in three games is Slingin’ Sammy’s routine and now the Baseball Gods have stipped that away from me.
(Daigle is a starter candidate, I suspect they see Lopez as a reliever, although the 40-man status probably played a part as well – had they had reverse status I don’t think they would mess with waivers for a move like this)
