Yep, watching it on MLB.TV right now. Awesome!

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

TV Brought a smile to my face

especially since Michaels and then Feliz singled when I tuned in; and Astros already to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

HOLY COW!

Home run by Matsui

Off Santana no less!

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:13 PM CST reply actions

Blum follows with a double

The Astros apparently brought the bats with them to Port St. Lucie

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:14 PM CST reply actions

Mets announcer just said, “Blum had a mediocre year for him last year.”

Um, you think? Who wouldn’t consider his 2009 a mediocre year?

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:14 PM CST reply actions

Michaels singles home Blum

2-0 Astros with one out in top of the first

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:17 PM CST reply actions

Feliz doubles, Michaels can't score

Runners at second and third.

Is it just me or are the Astros really cracking the bat against Santana. Not his best stuff. Wonder if he’s working on something specific.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:19 PM CST reply actions

Didn't realize this...

But Chris Shelton bears a striking resemblance to Jake Busey. Weird.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:20 PM CST reply actions

Shelton sac fly, 3-0 Astros

Feliz didn’t move up to third, however.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:21 PM CST reply actions

Did y’all see Chapman yesterday? He looked pretty good. I’m still bitter.

by Jordan Sams on Mar 9, 2010 12:23 PM CST reply actions

Leadoff double by Gary Matthews, Jr.

Apparently, his new shipment of HGH got to spring training in time for that at-bat.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:24 PM CST reply actions

What??

I should stop listening to these Mets guys. They just said Q would be the starting catcher “naturally.” The spring is a chance for everyone to catch up, I guess.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:27 PM CST reply actions

David Wright homers on 3-2 count

Myers threw a low fastball that Wright took to right-center.

3-2 Mets.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:28 PM CST reply actions

High, outside fastball K's Davis

Myers gets out of inning with 2 runs, 2 strikeouts and a walk.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:34 PM CST reply actions

Update on mini-camps game

Via Footer:
Trinidad tossed one scoreless inning, allowing one hit. He threw 18 pitches, nine for strikes.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:35 PM CST reply actions

After Matsui walks, Bourn steals third

Without a throw. Two outs, so no fielders covered the bag.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:46 PM CST reply actions

Blum singles up the middle.

scoring Bourn and making the score 4-2.

That also chases Santana in his first start of the spring.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:47 PM CST reply actions

Santana had arm surgery (can’t recall if it was shoulder or elbow) around mid-season 2009. So, if you’re a Mets’ fan, you have to be concerned.

by clack on Mar 9, 2010 12:51 PM CST reply actions

It also looked like a fairly typical first start of the spring. Concerned, yes. Worried? Probably not.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:52 PM CST up reply actions

Michaels just hit a ball right at David Wright, who couldn’t handle it cleanly. Michaels beat the throw and loaded the bases for Feliz.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:53 PM CST reply actions

AAAAND Feliz strikes out looking

On a pitch off the outside of the plate…

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:54 PM CST reply actions

I agree. I didn’t have a good concept of what he looked like before now and was somewhat surprised.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

Nice play by Feliz

That grounder would have been a single last year

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 9, 2010 12:57 PM CST reply actions

Wow!

Feliz just ate a ball up to his left in the hole, got up and made the throw. Was a great play. Made up somewhat for that terrible strikeout.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 12:57 PM CST reply actions

Another thing to note

Manzella was waiting back there to cut that ball off. Would have been an infield hit anyway, but if there had been a runner on second or third, it might have saved a run.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 12:58 PM CST reply actions

Nifty double play ends second

Good play by Manzella, good relay by Matsui.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:00 PM CST reply actions

Chris Shelton is getting a lot of playing time so far this spring

Is he a legitimate part of Astros future (Near term or long term)?

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 9, 2010 1:03 PM CST reply actions

I’m thinking they view him more as insurance to Lance Berkman this spring. Plus, they don’t have a lot of good choices on who to play at first in Round Rock.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

Sullivan strikes out looking

This Eggbert must have pretty good stuff. And a silly name.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:05 PM CST reply actions

Hit and run doesn't work...

Luckily, Blanco sailed his throw into center field. Otherwise, Shelton was hosed.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:06 PM CST reply actions

Down goes Manzella.

That’s three strikeouts for Eggbert now in an inning.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:07 PM CST reply actions

Smart move on Myers

To avoid that bat. Don’t want to get hurt in ST.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:13 PM CST reply actions

John Franco interviewed

He hurt the Astros his short time with the team. The team improved as soon as Franco was released.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 9, 2010 1:13 PM CST reply actions

I guess it wasn’t just Ed Wade that was obsessed with bringing in relievers. That’s been the Astros MO for the past 10 seasons.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

yes, Franco didn’t have anything left as a pitcher when he was signed by the Astros. But I always have one memorable moment in mind when I think of him as an Astros. Astros were playing Mets at Shea Stadium with Roy Oswalt on the mound. Cliff Floyd and Roy O had some bad blood from previous games/seasons. Floyd hits Oswalt well, and Roy tends to pitch him tight to keep him from getting comfortable, which Floyd doesn’t like. In this particular game, Oswalt hits Floyd and Floyd heads for the mound. Naturally, infielders move toward Floyd. Then the camera goes to the outfield, and a whole phalanx of Astros relievers are charging hard out of the bullpen toward the infield. Out in front of that group, running as fast as he can is old man John Franco, leading the way. I always liked the idea that Franco was ready to fight his old teammates and led the way to protect Oswalt.

by clack on Mar 9, 2010 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

Nice Myers-started DP

makes up for the almost broken bat disaster.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:14 PM CST reply actions

Myers is probably done

Went three innings, gave up four hits and two earned runs while striking out two and walking one.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:19 PM CST reply actions

Has it been skippy for you guys as well?

I’m trying to determine if it’s my connection or them.

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

Not until recently. Was pretty good until then.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

I think it is on their end.

We all had probems.

Mine has not been that “skippy” though. Just in case reduce your resolution and see what happens.

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 9, 2010 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Good to see a little power on display from Feliz. We’ll need him to have Wade’s 20 HR year if we want to make up for the loss of Tejada.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:26 PM CST up reply actions

He’s throwing 96MPH according to the speed gun for the broadcast.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

Falls on his arm, though, looks like it hurt a little.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Lindstrom looks great

Good location on his fastball, great velocity.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:40 PM CST reply actions

I was really impressed by him.

He struck out Ike Davis to end his first inning. He threw a called strike with his breaking ball for strike two high in the zone. Then threw the same pitch (same location) for strike three, getting Davis to swing over top of it. Great couple innings by him.

by byronlhsdrmr on Mar 9, 2010 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

Holy crap!

Michaels made a second great catch in the inning.

Another 1-2-3 frame for Lindstrom. Probably done now.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:44 PM CST reply actions

I honestly think Michaels could be a starter on a lot of teams. He’s underrated by a lot of Astros fans.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:50 PM CST up reply actions

I’m not saying this because of today, of course. I was looking at his UZR numbers and surprised how good they are.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

Michaels plays well in Spring Training and did well in September

after Astros way out of it.

He was poor the rest of the season.

Now another way to look at his performance was he performed better (at the plate anyway) when he started a game than when he came off the bench.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 9, 2010 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

I think people just have that impression for some reason because he had a really bad May/June.

March/April: .865 OPS
May: .332 OPS
June: .493 OPS
July: .826 OPS
August: 1.117 OPS
September/October: .597 OPS

I’m not sure I buy that there is any kind of repeatable consistency in what times of the year a hitter does well, by the way.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

Matsui looks good

Two singles before being pinch-ran for by Navarro.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:51 PM CST reply actions

Inning over.

Astros now up 8-2 through 5 1/2 innings.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:54 PM CST reply actions

Nice play by Manzella

Charging a ball slightly to his right.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:56 PM CST reply actions

He looks good out there. Night and day between him and Tejada. Time will tell about the Everett comparisons.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 1:56 PM CST up reply actions

Raccoons cause so many problems. And yet, are so funny.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Arias warming up in the ’pen

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

Clint Everts is slated to finish the game for the Mets

Former Cy Falls great. Has sorta fallen off the map since being drafted so high back in the same draft as ex-teammate Scott Kazmir.

The Crawfish Boxes, Astros blogging at its finest.

Jason Castro in to bat

Roger Clemens in attendance, mention of Koby being at the game.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:09 PM CST reply actions

Koby here with the team, that is.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

Castro pinch-hitting for Shelton

Interesting, the Astros seem to be rotating Towles, Quintero and Castro through behind the plate every three games.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

Castro doubles

Very nice swing, deep to center field

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:11 PM CST reply actions

Big time double for Castro, over center fielder’s head.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:11 PM CST reply actions

Could have been a HR in some parks, maybe. Lot of power on display there.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

Power

Many’s greatest concern with him is his “lack” of power. Citing his Corpus Christi numbers last year. I think its overstated. Too small of a sample size. He’s got more power than most perceive. Biggio like power, lots of doubles a few homeruns sprinkled in.

by byronlhsdrmr on Mar 9, 2010 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

Early observation

From the few at bats I’ve seen so far it looks like the hitters are a little more patient than last years spring training.

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 2:17 PM CST reply actions

Davis homers to lead off seventh

To dead center. Not the best greeting for Arias.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:19 PM CST reply actions

Arias looking rusty… now walks the next batter.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

It’s Francoeur too

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

Arias going out of the game… maybe injured.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

And that's teh end of Arias' day.

Appears to be an injury issue. Sampson into the game.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:21 PM CST reply actions

=(

These are the two guys I’m interested in seeing to, and how they bounce back from their Cooper injuries.

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

Do the Astros caps have strange bills?

They look straight fronts not curved

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 9, 2010 2:23 PM CST reply actions

He has looked good at the plate

All the outfielders are playing well right now. The only problem is Sullivan. If the Astros want to keep a lefty as their fifth outfielder, they might be passing up a better player.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah. So far I’m really liking Ramirez as a fifth defensive outfielder.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

Sampson out there in the eighth

Looks like Gervacio will close it out in the ninth.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:37 PM CST reply actions

Arias has a mild trap strain

Suck

The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

by Stephen Higdon on Mar 9, 2010 2:40 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Good play at second

Is that Navarro or did Maysonet get put in?

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:43 PM CST reply actions

He pitched in a 'B' game last Thursday

And is supposed to pitch in another one tomorrow

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

Paulino

Wandy going 3 and Paulino going 3 tomorrow (according to Brian McTaggart).

by byronlhsdrmr on Mar 9, 2010 5:16 PM CST up reply actions

Hah, he doesn't even have a name on his jersey

And he’s wearing 99. Did they just throw his dad a bone here?

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:46 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, he looks young too.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

He seems he’d be like a fit for second base, but that’s just based on appearance not actual skill. I guess I’m just used to a towering lance at 1st base.

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

I was just thinking that because of the burst of speed he showed out of the box on that hustle single. He may not have soft enough hands though.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

*He seems like he’d be a fit

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

Wow

Clemens hustled out a single

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 2:47 PM CST reply actions

Nice at-bat in general. Some good swings fouling those pitches off, showed a pretty good eye.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

Taking crap from the commentators about his windup where he points the ball at third base.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

Now I’m glad I muted it a couple of innings ago.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

They’re laughing at him, saying he better strike everybody out because he does that.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

they showed the crowd starting to wave to him.

I’m sure he’s probably used to it by now, but he’ll get a lot of that kind of stuff through out the season.

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

That’s okay, it’ll be his “thing” that he’s known for when he’s our star closer.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

what happened to the 3 steps into the upright position?

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

From what I’m catching he does it only once or twice, it seemed a lot more defined last year. I never saw that look he gives to the 3rd base side.

by timmy_ on Mar 9, 2010 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, it does look a little more subtle.

by OremLK on Mar 9, 2010 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

Game over

8-4 Astros win.

Record is now 3-3.

Good win, overall and some good play from guys like Feliz, Gervacio and Ramirez. Castro also keeps the catcher battle that much more interesting.

by David Coleman on Mar 9, 2010 3:10 PM CST reply actions
