Walk to Pence and hit by Feliz puts runners at the corners with no outs. Michaels with Sac Fly RBI. 1-1

Manzella strikes out, but puts up a good fight and fouls off a lot of pitches. Hard to be too disappointed with an at bat like that.

Run down goes well for the Astros

For once…

Hanson was unaware of the fact that there was supposed to be a squeeze play.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

by Stephen Higdon on Mar 7, 2010 12:43 PM CST reply actions

But he winds up working a walk out of it, as Moehler can’t find the zone.

Moehler gets out of two walks on a flyball to Pence.

Baseball Prospectus mention on the air

Talking about how muddy the NL Central is projected to be by PECOTA, with only one team projected above .500 (St. Louis).

Matsui with infield hit, goes to 2d and 3d on error.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 12:56 PM CST reply actions

And Berkman drives him in with another double!

by OremLK on Mar 7, 2010 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

Melky Cabrera gets to third on Glaus double to LF corner. Radio guys are praising Carlos Lee’s defensive ability.

Majewski is pitching for Stros by the way.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 1:12 PM CST reply actions

McCann doubles in 2 runs to tie the game.

Braves are getting good swings on Majewski.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 1:14 PM CST up reply actions

Manzella missed grounder through the hole….radio guys say that McCann blocked Manzella’s vision. Radio guys seem to disagree whether McCann was playing a game with him.

Braves take the lead 4-3 on ball hit through rightside of infield. Ex-Astro Brooks Conrad with the hit.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

Announcers are saying McCann got in his sightline running the bases and caused the error.

by OremLK on Mar 7, 2010 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

5-3 lead for Braves now, with Corcoran pitching for Astros. Glaus with RBI. And he keeps giving up singles.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 1:49 PM CST reply actions

Escobar with 2 run double. 7-3 lead for Braves. Corcoran is giving up lots of good contact. Arnsberg out to talk to him….not sure if this is a pitching change. No, it’s not a pitching change.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

Not looking too good for either Majewski or Corcoran so far. Not that the sample size is even a fraction of being large enough to make a pronouncement about them, but they did need to make a good impression in ST to overcome their iffy numbers.

It’s always hard to get excited about minor league pitchers coming off seasons below 2.00 K/BB.

by OremLK on Mar 7, 2010 1:56 PM CST up reply actions

Both Majewski and Corcoran are heavy groundball pitchers, and it seemed like a lot of GBs were making it through the infield. How much of that is defense or not, I don’t know.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

You may not have noticed, but I’m not really a big fan of ball-in-play groundball pitchers ;) Leaving that much more up to luck and defense always makes me nervous.

by OremLK on Mar 7, 2010 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

Don’t talk to Dave Duncan. :)

I like groundball pitchers a lot. However, I prefer GB pitchers who also can strike out a reasonable number of batters (e.g., Alberto Arias). I like the reduction in HRs which comes with the GB pitcher, and it allows teams to enhance their pitching by improving the infield defense. I don’t think Corcoran and Majewski will turn out to be much more than minor league depth. Corcoran seems to have a better chance of contributing at the major league level, given that he has pitched in the majors more recently and he pitched fairly well at Round Rock last year.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 2:15 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I do think being able to get a lot of groundballs is an advantage, but I don’t like guys who rely on that and have bad K/BB ratios. Sampson is a good example… never been a big fan.

by OremLK on Mar 7, 2010 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

I always felt that Sampson’s low K rate would prevent him from becoming more than a No. 5 pitcher or a relief pitcher. However, Sampson’s K/BB rate wasn’t bad in AAA and his early seasons as a major leaguer because he walked so few batters. However, his walk rate has been rising in more recent years, causing a decline in his K/BB rate. Sampson is a guy who has to be precise in his control.

Towles hit by pitch. Before he was hit, radio guys talked about how he crowds the plate, and risks a HBP. Zumaya hit Towles with 98 mph heat when the Astros played the Tigers. Teams try to pitch on the outside part of the plate against Towles, which is why Towles crowds the plate.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 2:04 PM CST reply actions

Lee doubles and Towles speedily gets around the bases for a run. 7-4.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

It’s not actually a bad strategy… as long as you don’t mind getting hit by more pitches and the increased injury risk.

by OremLK on Mar 7, 2010 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

just ask Biggio…

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

I guess Towles having that kind of career at the plate would be acceptable. If he has to.

by OremLK on Mar 7, 2010 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

Josh Banks is giving up runs now. Another pitcher who doesn’t have much chance at the ML roster. A walk and three singles led to 2 runs. 9-4 with 1 out.

by clack on Mar 7, 2010 2:19 PM CST reply actions

Banks is a guy who has always underperformed his FIP, which makes me nervous… but his peripherals are good. Pretty average peripherals as a starting pitcher all around, though, and he could be a nice piece of minor league depth in case the rotation gets hit hard by injuries (knock on wood)…

Shelton with a single

Possible two out rally in effect now.

But I had the volume down kind of low.

Game over...

Pitching was spotty in this game. But Villar and Englebrook are spotlighted by radio guys for their good performances. Lance Berkman is player of the game for the Astros, according to radio guys. They also say that Berkman has looked good playing defense at 1st, with no apparent effect from his knee.
