Interesting that two NL teams are using a DH this late in the season. Shelton at 1b and Johnson at 3b is interesting this late also. Well, I should mention that I’m basing this on the mlb.com live boxscore. That disagrees with the posted llineup above.

Bourn is walked and steals 2d, advanced to 3d by Matsui, and scores on Pence grounder. Astros score a run without a hit.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:09 PM CDT reply actions

groundrule double by Feliz. Deep line drive which bounced over the wall. Braves announcers say that Feliz was a late change to DH.

2 run HR by Chris Johnson. I guess he is making a statement.

3-0 Astros

No kidding. Making a case for playing time.

Very nice...

you know sometimes guys only need a crack and they can open the door. Is he any good at first? I remember another converted 3rd baseman we had a 1st for a while.

He has never played 1st base in his career. I’m surprised that the Astros don’t give him a try at 1st base in the spring games.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

One thing I’m glad about is that he’s hitting blasts off both righties and lefties… historically he’s had a fairly bad platoon split in the minors.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

ah brings back memories...

of the early 80’s…Puhl leading off, Craig Reynolds bunting him over…used to love when we played that way…

Oswalt today

In case you didn’t see it Footer tweeted that he threw 81 pitches and gave up 2ER’s in 5 innings and had 7K’s. Reached 92-94 on the gun, and Mills said he looked outstanding!

Wandy gives up “seeing eye” groundball, according to Braves’ announcers. Ball bounced over Keppinger’s head near 2d base. And he is about to walk Heyward.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:16 PM CDT reply actions

Heyward is on my fantasy team

I hope he has a Ryan Braun-like rookie season.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:16 PM CDT reply actions

Just made a nice defensive play in RF to retire Shelton… announcers comparing him to LeBron James.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Too bad luck balls for Wandy

Softly hit ball up the middle took a high hop over the bag, walked Heyward, then a dying quail in front of Bourn. Bases loaded nobody out.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:19 PM CDT reply actions

bloop double by Glaus down the RF line.

Braves announcers are referring to as a “little bloop” that turned into a double.

Now McCann with a sac fly for the first out.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

He has good action on his curve today. Fastball location still looks like a struggle.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Watching on MLB.TV by the way.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m listening to the Braves audio, by the way.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn’t buy MLB.TV because it’s not that valuable to me during the regular season due to the blackout policies.

yay back to jumpy video….

by Timothy De Block on Mar 31, 2010 12:20 PM CDT reply actions

Curveball looks great

Strikeout to end the inning.

Wandy didn’t look bad, just some poor luck on balls in play. His fastball location improved quickly as the inning went on and his curve was great… great action, lots of swingthroughs, and some of the ones which the ump called balls I thought might be strikes, so his command was good.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:25 PM CDT reply actions

3-3 now by the way, going into the second inning.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

get all this bad luck crap out of the way before the season starts. Or could this be an indication of how our season is going to go??

"now you chunkin' in there.."

by jano4 on Mar 31, 2010 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Astros may have a lot of “bad luck” on groundballs if Keppinger plays shortstop very much.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yikes

"now you chunkin' in there.."

by jano4 on Mar 31, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

To be fair, I don’t know that Adam Everett in his prime gets to that one “seeing eye” ball. It took a HUGE hop over the bag.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I wasn’t referring to this game as much as the general idea of Keppinger playing shortstop. He has bad range.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I know. Agree completely.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Wandy is getting killed with 5 straight hits. I thought he was only going to pitch 2 innings. Apparently one of the singles was another seeing eye grounder past Matsui, but by and large it sounds like a lot of well hit balls. And as I write this, another blooper falls in front of Bourn but Bourn throws out McCann at third base (ruled a force out). Braves announcers say that Wandy “isn’t fooling anybody.”

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

Getting pounded… now 9-3 off a three run double.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

So far Braves lead 9-3. I don’t know what’s wrong, but Wandy just gave up a 3 run double to Hinske. Wandy will be taken out and replaced by Majewski.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Braves announcers...

say that Mills has to be very concerned about Wandy. They conclude: “The Astros look to be in for a very long year.”

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 1:02 PM CDT reply actions

ugh

(unless they mean Astros will go deep into the post-season)

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

by Stephen Higdon on Mar 31, 2010 1:03 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Wandy has always struck me as the kind of guy who needs to be really mentally into the game to perform well. Makes sense that it would be difficult today.

by OremLK on Mar 31, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Astros load the bases with three hits but fail to score.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 1:14 PM CDT reply actions

Hunter Pence

I’d tell Pence in a bases loaded situation he can’t swing at a pitch until he’s got to two strikes or get’s a fastball.

by Timothy De Block on Mar 31, 2010 1:16 PM CDT reply actions

Hunter Pence + Derek Lowe = grounder to shortstop.

And that’s what we got.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

If Hunter could improve his pitch recognition and ability to hit sliders/breaking balls, I think he’d easily be a 40 HR per season type hitter. He just has that much raw power. It’s a shame he rolls over so much off-speed stuff.

Jack Shuck with a RBI single. David will like that.

RBI single by Johnson. 9-5 game now.

Johnson is certainly making management think

Moehler apparently yelling at Quintero. Some sort of disagreement with Q…and umpire gets mad.

Can’t really figure out what’s going on, but I assume it’s not good when the umpire gets mad.

Braves announcers suggest that umpire is ready to leave Florida as soon as possible, and lacks patience for communications problems between pitcher/catcher.

I just noticed

Bourn’s raised his batting average like 100 points since he’s come back from his oblique injury…hopefully he’s warming up at the right time with the power righty duo of Lincecum and Cain…the triple yesterday was especially encouraging.

by linkxmalon on Mar 31, 2010 2:10 PM CDT reply actions

yes. Bourn has been on fire lately. Both Matsui and Bourn have raised their BAs to .300 range, which would be a nice development for the top two spots.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Braves announcers describing Brooks Conrad: “fan favorite,” “gritty player,” “always gets his uniform dirty,” “throwback player,” “doesn’t wear batting gloves,” “hit well when he starts, but less productive when he only gets 1 or 2 at bats per week.”

That needs to catch on throughout the league.

Braves score a run off Gervacio. 10-5.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

Game over. 10-5 loss by Astros.

The Astros took out most of the regulars after about 5 innings, by the way.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 2:40 PM CDT reply actions

What happened to Wandy today?

I missed the first few inning and didn’t hear any reasoning… Maybe it was emotional distress, as suggestion by our announcers? When its not going well, he always starts taking off his cap, and wiping his face with his sleeve. It’s never a good sign.

Plus, it seems awful late in month to be planning on only 2 innings, or is that reasonable?

by johanna14 on Mar 31, 2010 2:58 PM CDT reply actions

The 2 innings of pitching seems unusual, but I think they were trying to get some work for Wandy before he was scheduled to leave for Houston for the baby birth. Also, I vaguely recall that he is scheduled to pitch a minor league game on short rest or something.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

correction…I think Wandy was pitching today on short rest after a minor league outing.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

thanks! That does explain the length – and possibly some fatigue by the third inning, if this was his between-starts-bullpen-like time…

by johanna14 on Mar 31, 2010 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions

In case you haven't had your fill of bad news....

Felipe Paulino is “day to day” after enduring back spasms when was playing catch.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 3:31 PM CDT reply actions

And Carlos Lee has tightness in his quad now too.

http://twitter.com/brianmctaggart/status/11363144198

This is getting insane. Fortunately, El Bufalo apparently played in the minor league game with Oswalt, Manzella, and Towles today.

Carlos Lee has tightness in right quad, will play in Minor League game today. Oswalt, Towles, Manzella and Bourgeois also in Minors game.

I mean that in the most sarcastic way possible.

Why do MLB regulars play in minor league game?

especially this soon to start of the season.

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 31, 2010 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

Players who are recovering from injuries are allowed to participate in minor league “scrimmages” before they play in the regular spring games. I’m not sure exactly why. But I assume that players are allowed to go half speed on certain plays if it involves a muscle strain or whatever. Perhaps there is an understanding in the minor league games that certain players are to be protected from having to make certain plays or engage in certain actions.

by clack on Mar 31, 2010 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

makes sense I guess

Why did JR Towles play in the minor league game?
