Astros cut 9: Majewski, Daigle, Castro, Chacin, Cash, Meyer, Shelton, Maysonet, Lopez.
via an Alyson Footer Tweet Maysonet, Shelton, and Daigle really, really surprise me.

No huge surprises for me.
With Towles’ hammy problems and recent slump I was getting slightly concerned, but it looks like they made the right choice on sending Castro to get some more experience at AAA.
I had hoped they would let Shelton stick around to fill in for Berkman, but knew it was a fool’s hope that he’d get at bats over Geoff “Veteran Presence” Blum.
Closest thing to a surprise for me was probably Daigle. It was neck and neck between him and Gervacio… I guess we know who they decided to run with. Welcome back, Sammy.
Kind of wish they would have cut Sampson instead of Daigle, though. Not a big fan of Sampson. But I guess Sampson is probably out of options and that’s why. Not sure…
On another note… they didn’t cut Johnson, huh? I wonder if he’s going to play first base if Berkman’s on the DL to start the season?
If that is the plan, I assume that the Astros would start to give him some time at 1st base in spring games. As best I can tell, Johnson has never played 1st base in his career. I suspect that this is a reward to let Johnson go to MMP and play in the exhibitions there.
Maybe they plan on putting Feliz at first base and Johnson at third? Would be weird because Feliz is a much better defender, but he does have experience at first.
That’s instantly what I thought when Johnson was brought up.
Maybe he’s playing his way onto the team, and once Berkman is back if he’s tearing the cover off the ball Feliz ends up as utility.

Or perhaps it indicates that they don’t intend on DL’ing Berkman, even if he can’t make the opening game. They can always call someone up if they find that he will be out long enough for the DL. I also would expect to see Feliz at 1st base at some point in the spring if they are looking at that approach. So I guess we’ll see.
Yeah, that was my other thought as well, clack. Hmm.
I’m remembering something Justice said during the off-season. I usually don’t put much stock in anything that comes off his keyboard, so take this with a bucket of salt, but he did mention something about Feliz being a good signing in part because he wouldn’t block CJ from playing his way onto the big league team.
that also means we have a 4.5 million utility infielder

I just don’t see it happening. Keppinger or Blum would have to be cut/traded, and Feliz can’t play 2d base or shortstop (with any efficacy). The overall team defense would be much worse. It would seem like a more plausible scenario if Feliz and CJ were platoon candidates. If Johnson’s spring games are an indication, his defense at 3d base is a problem.
Two hours ago I would of agreed with you, but now with these latest cuts I’m not so sure anymore what the plan is.
While I don’t agree with it, could there not be the possibility that Feliz is traded?
by Timothy De Block on Mar 30, 2010 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions
seems unlikely from many standpoints. but I’m not aware of teams which need a starting 3d baseman, and Feliz’s $4.5 million salary is high for a back up. For instance, he certainly would be too expensive for the Rangers to use as a back up.
Ya if he were to get traded it’d have to be as a starter.
I know the Royals are having issues with starters at 3B this year.

Feliz is starter quality
With Chris Johnson’s improvement, Astros may be amenable to a trade.

Alex Gordon will start the season on the DL with a thumb injury. He is the Royal’s third baseman when he returns. Callaspo is expected to be the starting third baseman until Gordon returns. Callaspo is good hitter; if the Royals would trade him to the Astros, I would take him.
I saw Callaspo was going to miss the opener too.

I think it’s possible, but not yet known for sure, whether he misses the opener. (I had Callaspo on my fantasy team and just dropped him, partly because of that possibility, and partly because my first baseman, Branyan, definitely will be on the DL on opening day.) In any event, Callaspo’s injury doesn’t seem like something which will keep him out very long. I still don’t see the Royals paying $4.5 million for a need which is temporary.
Sampson has pitched well and he has a track record with the team. I’m not surprised that they would pick Sampson over Daigle. Assuming that Daigle returns to RR, it would be interesting to see what role he is given.
I'm a Chris Sampson fan
Until Ceclil Cooper (remember him?) ran Sampson’s arm ragged, Sampson succeeded in every role he was put in. Sampson improves the team.

I know you are :)
I just really don’t like relievers who can’t consistently strike out more than a batter per two innings, whether they get lots of groundballs or not. It’s too many balls in play, and requires otherworldly control to find any success whatsoever.
To Sampson’s credit, he does historically have good groundball rates and good control, and that’s why he hasn’t been knocked flat out of the majors by now.
Still, I can’t get over my reaction when I look at his stats and see that two out of the last four years he struck out less than four batters per nine innings. A 4.39 career K/9 is just asking for seasons like the last one, where poor BABIP luck wrecks your ERA.

Reserve outfielder but it looks like Sullivan has that one pretty much wrapped up.

The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Move Lee to 1st...
His lack of speed is safer at first than in LF, while Berkman recovers. We move someone faster, younger to LF and all of a sudden we have us a party going on….
"I've never gone into a game trying to win the Heisman Trophy; I go into a game trying to win." - Colt McCoy
We discussed that a week or two back.
A couple of us agreed with your idea. (After all Carlos Lee did play first a few games in 2009)
Someone else pointed out that Wade or Mills had already decided NOT to use an outfielder for an infield position. If true, that squashes the Lee-at-first idea.
