Nice to see Michael Bourn in the lineup

Wandy battiing ninth today. Tampa Bay’s using DH instead of the pitcher batting.

RBI single for Evan Longoria

I’m torn with that, he’s was my first round draft pick, but I don’t like seeing the Astros lose or Wandy get roughed up.

I should mention I also drafted Wandy. So, it’s a good news/bad news thing for my team.

I feel like I drafted half of the players in this game on one fantasy team or another. Heh.

Do you need more evidence that his nickname should be El Bufalo??

"One of the things we forget about Carlos is he can’t stop quickly."

From watching the 3d baseman and shortstop racing after flyballs in short LF, I don’t think they have forgotten that…it always seems that they lose concentration trying to keep an eye on Lee.

Friday (or was it Thursday) was the only day I could not get any coverage

One day- Tuesday maybe I forget – I was so busy I could not listen or watch .

I caught most innings this week, but I missed my share.

Raymond mentioned it was Meachem’s positioning that make the play. Wonder if that will happen during the regular season (esp. considering what Ensberg said about the optical illusion from the dugout in MMP)

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I have read some allusions to the fact that the Astros front office was disappointed in the previous coaching staff’s deficiencies in positioning players.

Improving there could also help the Astros’ defensive proficiency

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn’t they finish near the top in 2008?

by Timothy De Block on Mar 27, 2010 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

the Astros’ defense was much better in 2008 than 2009. The Astros ranked poorly in 2009. They had the worst DER of any NL team. (Admittedly DER is a flawed stat.) But the Astros also had the worst RZR of any NL team in 2009. My recollection is that the 2008 team’s DER was below average and the RZR was above average.

8 outs so far, 6 on the ground

The offense appears to be regressing, just in time for the regular season

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

this is pretty close to the opening day starting lineup for the Astros, assuming Berkman is DL’d.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Which is scary, though at least the Astros are facing the Rays’ ace in Shields

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Since the first inning, that is. Upton weak grounder ends the top of the fourth

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Astros can’t score after the Pence hit again. Shelton had a long at bat before making the last out on a ball off Shields.

Lindstrom then threw a perfect fifth

How good has he been this spring? He might be the player I’m most excited about heading into 2010.

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:31 PM CDT reply actions

He's been very impressive.

I can’t get too terribly excited about any reliever, but I like what I’ve seen from him/heard about him.

by OremLK on Mar 27, 2010 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I’ve been listening to Rays’ announcers. Referring to Lindstrom and Fulchino, they say that the Astros relievers have been making a loud pop in Quintero’s mit.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

not sure...

but googling, I see that Andy Freed and David Wills are the radio broadcasters for the Rays Radio network. Freed is a former Pawtucket AAA announcer, who won an Emmy for sports broadcasting, and Wills is a former White Sox announcer.

The Rays have an impressive television broadcast crew, including Dewayne Staats, who used to be an Astros broadcaster and whose son in law is former Astros (and now Rays) reliever Wheeler. Also Kevin Kennedy does color, and Todd Kallas, son of Harry Kallas, is on the television broadcasts.

Michael Bourn must be healthy

He’s doubled and made a couple of running plays in the outfield.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 27, 2010 1:39 PM CDT reply actions

I don’t think the Astros would have put him in a game if he wasn’t 100 percent. This close to the regular season, its’ more important to keep the starters healthy than to get them at-bats.

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I can imagine that Bourn gives the pitchers a lot of confidence….I say that because I have a lot of confidence everytime the announcers say that the ball is hit toward Bourn.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Depends if it's in MMP

Give Carlos credit, he plays balls of the wall pretty well.

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

You can probably guess that answer…I usually cross my fingers that they meant Left-CF.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Maysonet just started a double play

To end the inning…how can the Astros not keep him on the roster? (I know how, but he should really make this team)

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:40 PM CDT reply actions

For the first time in several years

The Astros have more players that should make the team than they have spots on the roster.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 27, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I wonder if Maysonet will be one of those players who is shuttling back and forth between RR and Houston a lot this season.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure he will

I’m just not sure that’s the best thing for him or the team.

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Wade had previously indicated that Maysonet’s chance to make the team would depend on how well he can play the outfield. Mills had said that Maysonet would get some outfield duty this spring, but I don’t recall any outfield play by Maysonet so far. Perhaps they saw him practice as an outfielder and decided against it, who knows?

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Clack, I know you like him

And I think Shelton is the perfect injury replacement for Berkman. I wouldn’t want to count on him over a full season, but he seems like a guy who can give you three or four good weeks in fill-in duty.

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions

In fact, I wouldn’t mind him staying as a pinch hit specialist, since he can play a little 3B, maybe a little LF with the small MMP porch.

by OremLK on Mar 27, 2010 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Shelton is a lefty killer. If he could work his way onto the roster as a pinch hitter after Berkman returns, I could see some dividends. One thing I would consider doing is calling up Shelton for the interleague games so that he could DH or play 1st base and allow Berkman to DH.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

another possibility is calling him Chris Johnson up for that role (DH) if he is tearing the cover off the ball and hitting better than Shelton. A number of NL teams call up hitters for the interleague games to DH or allow another starter to DH. The Astros haven’t done that…maybe it’s because they haven’t had hitters in AAA who deserved the ML at bats.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

He was keeping the ball down in the zone

The Rays were just hitting him. He apparently made the adjustments he needed, but it’s his second straight rough start in a first inning.

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I see looking at the box that he had 4:3 K/BB. All three walks in the first inning, I guess?

Two were, I believe

Then he walked another guy in the third, but stranded him

Changes coming

Meyer third, someone in center and JB Shuck (!!) in right. Have I mentioned how much I like Shuck? Really solid, if not spectacular, skillset. Glad to see him get into a big league game.

by David Coleman on Mar 27, 2010 1:53 PM CDT reply actions

I like him too. He has a reputation as a bit of a blue-collar player, but his performance has impressed in both his years in the organization nevertheless.

I appreciate that he can actually walk in over 10% of his plate appearances. Something we could use a little more of…

I don’t have much confidence in Byrdak. He has been lucky the last two years, and I was expecting him to crater last season (but it didn’t happen). Given how Byrdak has pitched this spring, my confidence in him has waned even more.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I would almost prefer Trinidad in the lefty specialist role. I’d say Wright or Abad instead but I’d like to see how they do as starters before committing to them in the pen.

by OremLK on Mar 27, 2010 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I was hoping that Chacin might show more than he has, and would displace Byrdak. Chacin has been a good reliever vs. lefties in the minors. Of course, I suppose it still could happen if Chacin pitches well in RR and Byrdak has a bad season.

by clack on Mar 27, 2010 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I should say “good pitcher vs. lefties” because Chacin mostly has started in the minors.

Apparently an unusual “runner interference” call on Matsui down the 1st base line. Rays’ announcers liked the call, but I don’t if it was good call or not.

Although the Rays’ announcers agreed with the call (no surprise), they did say that the call isn’t made very often when the pitcher’s throw hits the base runner.

Kata robbed of game winning hit.

Hit line drive and outfielder Contreras leaped and caught the ball. Rays’ announcers are going crazy, like this is a regular season game and Willie Mays just made a World Series catch.
