ST Game No. 20: Houston Astros at Pittsburgh Pirates
Grapefruit League record (as meaningful as a bag of sand): 10-8
I can't believe it! There's another team in Florida that the Astros can play besides the Nationals? Inconceivable!
Today's starters: RHP Felipe Paulino vs. RHP Ross Ohlendorf
Brandon Lyon and Gary Majewski are also scheduled to pitch in the game.
The lineup, per McTaggart:
1) T.J. Steele, CF
2) Kazuo Matsui, 2B
3) Jason Michaels, LF
4) Pedro Feliz, 3B
5) Chris Shelton, 1B
6) Edwin Maysonet, SS
7) Humberto Quintero, C
8) Drew Locke, RF
9) Felipe Paulino, P

Every additional game without Michael Bourn
makes me a little more nervous.
What is the latest update on his condition?

He’s recovering but still not taking batting practice, from what I read on McTaggerts latest blog.
They’re probably just taking it extra cautious with him.

Just that he’s getting better. No timetable yet on a return.

I hope we’re just getting all our injuries out of the system in Spring Training so we can have a healthy season.
I can hope that, right?
Yes, I’am a bit concerned about all the injuries happening.

Pirates batter (Milledge) intentionally batting with cracked bat ????
Called out on strikes – I guess cracked bat doesn’t hurt if you are called out on strikes.
Paulino struck out the side (not counting three who reached base safely )

Arias hurt
With a posterior cuff impingement and rotator cuff weakness. Can our medical guys explain that?
Found this on impingement:

Looks like they may of caught it before a tear.

Astros County did some actual, medical research. Sounds like this is the precursor to a full-on tear. Welcome to the 25-man roster, Sammy Gervacio…

yesterday’s Cardinals broadcaster was a pitcher in Tommy Lasorda’s bullpen. He was explaining that different managers have different habits in using their bullpen. He said Lasorda would make relief pitchers get up and warm up even if he didn’t plan to use them. Brownie said something like “I’m sure that wasn’t intentional, but it must have been hard on pitchers’ arms.” He responded, “yeah, it was really hard on the pitchers, but I think Lasorda did it just for fun.” I was thinking of Cecil Cooper when he said that.
so Paulino settled down after the first??
any idea on his line for the day?
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Matsui is 3 for 3 today…his average is up to .306.
Shelton is 2 for 2 with a walk.
Quintero is 2 for 2.
And think, the regulars aren’t even playing today.

I looked at the Bucs Dugout game thread, and they began by making fun of the Astros lineup. After the score got to 5-1, they decided they had jinxed the game by questioning the lineup. I can understand their reaction when Pence and Lee aren’t in the lineup.
We’re being mocked by the Pirates. How the mighty have fallen…

Twitter updates from Will Carroll
Indicate that Arias’ problem is bad. The docs will have to get his inflammation to go away, because this is a problem that could return. Problems could be a precursor to a full-blown tear in the broadest sense, but the fact that the Astros have caught it now mean a tear can be prevented.
Here's his line
5 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Six of the seven hits were singles. Thanks to Alyson Footer and Brian McTaggart for the tidbits
Maysonet with a long double off the wall, drives in Shelton. 8-1. Pirates announcers say that wind blowing in kept Maysonet from getting a HR.
Drew Locke triples in Maysonet. 9-1. Pirates outfielder Delwyn Young leaped trying to get the ball at the wall, and fell and lay on the ground for a few seconds, which probably helped turn a double into a triple.
Seems to me the Astros
Are playing with a little more fire this spring. All these minor leaguers are giving me some hope for our farm system as we mover through the season. Shelton, Steele, Locke etc…
Then again maybe it is just because we are playing the pirates….
Hey Clack…if you are a moderator on the board could we get something posted about who maybe going to opening day?? I’m getting my tickets soon and wondered if anyone else is going.
thanks
"now you chunkin' in there.."
I think David had posted something earlier in the spring training about group outings. I could put something up, but maybe David will see this and post an article. He seemed to have given it some thought.
We'll get a thread going tomorrow
So people can discuss this. Still working on getting a TCB group outing together. Will have more information later.

Pirates announcers are saying, “take this with a grain of salt.” This may be a spring game, but I’m sure Pirates’ fans can’t be happy about it, since we basically have seen the Pirates opening day lineup.
I agree with you that the minor leaguers have played well, both offensively and defensively—-probably better than I expected. Some of these guys like Steele, Meyer, and Barnes are A ball players who seemed to fit right in with higher level of play.
Drew Meyer
He played in CC last year at 2nd, he’s older and spent some time in the majors with the rangers.
true.
my mistake…for some reason, I was thinking of him as the Lexington 3d baseman.
As far as AA players, Drew Locke also looked pretty good in this game. He hasn’t gotten into many games (11 at bats now), but he has made the most of his opportunities. BA .375, OPS over 1.0.
Strange to see that he came over from minor league camp this year, as opposed to making the team last year =X

Astros win 11-1.
Drew Locke with a fine catch to end the game. Pirates announcers thought it was a great catch by the “youngster.” Locke reached into stands for foul catch with good effort to make a Houdini catch.
Well, Paulino just made a big statement. I’m sure Mills liked what he saw. What’s even better is that felipe did it against the Pirates opening day roster; not a bunch of invitees, and minor leaguers.
pencil him in the 4th slot in the rotation...
now if we can the consistency he has lacked through out his stint in the bigs we could have a “phenom”
"now you chunkin' in there.."
Perhaps he will be the first
of Arnsbergs…if that is how you spell it…success stories.
"now you chunkin' in there.."
4th??
Are you downgrading Bud Norris?

The Yankees just placed Chad Gaudin on waivers
He has some control problems, but there’s a lot to like there, despite his $2.95M salary. Wonder if the front office has any interest in claiming him?
I wondered about picking up Gaudin too. Since he would have to be placed on the 25 man roster, you would have to ask if there is a starter he would replace. Since I’m not wild about bumping Norris or Paulino from the rotation, I don’t know that I would want to pick up Gaudin. At $2.95 M, he would be fairly expensive for a reliever, particularly since he can’t pitch well to LHBs (career K/BB ratios: vs. RHB, 2.8; vs LHB, .83). If the Astros believed that Norris has an injury, for instance (I’m not saying he does), then I think Gaudin would be a nice option to try out. My guess is that the Yankees are hoping he clears waivers and agrees to report to AAA, where he becomes a starter in reserve.
Yeah, roster space is the issue. If we took on Gaudin we’d basically be forced to release Moehler, and $2.95 million is fairly expensive for somewhere around 0.5-1 win.
Still, I wouldn’t be upset if they did claim Gaudin and release Moehler; Gaudin still has two years (including this one) of ML service time left before free agency, he has upside, and he’s projected to pitch better than Moehler this season. (In fact, he is projected to pitch better than Felipe Paulino, as well.)
I doubt the front office is looking to spend that kind of money, but I would be pleasantly surprised if they chose to take a chance on a younger player instead of sticking with the “cagey veteran”.
Wouldn’t the Astros only have to pay him the league minimum if they pick him up and not his full salary? I think the Yankees are on the hook for that.
