3) Hunter Pence, RF

4) Carlos Lee, LF

5) Pedro Feliz, 3B

Other pitchers available in this game are Gustavo Chacin, Andy Van Hekken, Wilton Lopez, Roy Corcoran, Sammy Gervacio, Gary Majewski and Jeremy Johnson.

Listen and watch the Red Sox game here. The Mets game is not on MLB.TV, but if you are in the Houston area, you can hear it on 740 KTRH.

Rain makes game vs. Mets iffy.

Oswalt is warming up, but Milo says the umbrellas have come out. I will check out the Red Sox game, I guess.

Red Sox broadcasters note that Norris didn’t have HR problems in the minors, but did have HR problems in the majors last year. Their comment: Norris can’t throw high fastballs like that in the majors without getting hammered. They also said that Norris’ velocity is declining.

Norris gives up a double to Youklis, which was inches from a HR. Norris will be taken out. The Astros didn’t bring but two major league pitchers with them.

Bourgeois stumbled over bag, similar to Manzella’s injury. He is taken out. Brandon Barnes will replace Bourgeois. Not sure who will play CF.

by clack on Mar 21, 2010 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Bourgeois has been having a nice little battle with Sullivan over the 5th OF position. I’m sure he will be disappointed if this injury costs him time this spring…it could cost him a position on the ML roster.

by clack on Mar 21, 2010 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

and that competition brought out the best in both the past week

I hope Bourgeois was taken out solely for precautionary reasons.

As I hear Milo with his carnival barker advertising style….I realize I didn’t hear any of that on the Red Sox radio broadcast. Oh, well.

by clack on Mar 21, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

just as I tune in to Mets...rains start and delay.

Broadcasters worry about putting Oswalt out there after this.

by clack on Mar 21, 2010 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I just flipped the tv on a few minutes ago..

I hope it comes back on so I can watch some Astros. The only live game I’ve caught is the last 3 innings of yesterday’s game, because they don;t show every game on tv here. I wonder what the weather is like in Florida..

Just as I type this, they remove the tarp on a wet field to get ready to play … girl’s college softball!

Televised Astros Red Sox on MLB.TV (not sure if on TV in Houston)

It just said "rain delay"..

So I asumed it was the Astros since they were in a rain delay and FSN had a rain delay message up…. but looks like it was softball that was on the schedule. They just got out of a rain delay.

As I return to Red Sox game...

Moehler has loaded the bases. Since Moehler had a DP before I left, he must be having problems.

Astros and Red Sox both wearing light pants and same color reddish tops

The numbers on the back of the shirts are different colors (Sox – black , Astros white). Otherwise it’s difficut to tell the teams apart.

I think this is the first spring game I can recall with German Duran playing shortstop. He is the former Rangers prospect who was picked up off waivers last season.

Mike Cameron doubled

he’s had a nice long career.

I recall him playing here for AA Birmingham Barons for 2 1/2 seasons. He covered at least half the outfield. Fast fast fast. had trouble batting.Somewhere he learned to hit

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 21, 2010 1:54 PM CDT reply actions

I like Cameron. But he is a flawed hitter, mostly due to K problems, which make him streaky. But when he is on a good streak, he is tough to get out. It’s surprising that he has remained a great defensive CF at his age.

Difference between Norris and Moehler

I didn’t see Norris pitch; but based on the first few posts above,

Norris threw a few high fastball that got hammered whilie Moehler keeping his pitches low – about a third of them in the dirt.

Moehler having the more effective approach.

Kevin Cash with groundrule double. Q was on 1st base on HBP. Ground rule keeps Q from scoring.

by clack on Mar 21, 2010 2:22 PM CDT reply actions

2 runs score on double by Brandon Barnes.

This guy, Barnes, is a Lancaster outfielder who doesn’t get the attention of Steele or Gaston; but he has made some plays and gotten some hits when he has been given a chance this spring. He made a great play in the outfield yesterday, and JD kept asking, “who is that?” saying, I want to give him some credit.

by clack on Mar 21, 2010 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

as I recall, he had a game winning hit in the 9th of another spring game.

Red Sox announcers are decrying that non-roster minor leaguers are hurting Papelbon. Before this inning started, they said Papelbon had been unhittable this spring.

I’ll give the Red Sox radio announcers credit for doing a little more homework on Astros’ players than some of the out of town spring announcers.

They did a good job of explaining his history and looking behind his 5+ ERA last year (talk about both halves to last season…his ERA was 17+in last 15 games). .

Results for the Day

Astros WIN against Red Sox 10-7 in 7 or 8 inning game shortened by rain and lightning.

Astros -Mets game rained out after one inning. Roy Oswalt struck out three Mets in his one inning.

Bud Norris had rough start giving up five runs in less than 2 innings. Moehler had a decent outing giving up 2 runs in four innigs. Urckfitz (1/3 inning) and Sampson (1 inning) had perfect albeit brief appearances.

Jason Bourgeois was injured legging out a single.

Barnes, Matsui, Chris Johnson, Blum, Cash good days at the plate.

I know it's only March, but...

you have be encouraged by the offense…as long as we can outscore everybody, our lack of quality pitching will not hurt us that much :-(

It’s been nice, but there’s no way the hitters keep up this frenetic pace. It’s a small sample size in spring.
