By the way, I think the team record you show is incorrect.

Yankees Brett Gardner starts off with a bunt off Myers. (Brett vs. Brett.)

Quintero picks him off at first base.

JD and Brownie point out that his game is in the Astros’ complex, but you would think it was the Yankees home ground. Lots of Yankee fans.

First in-game interview with Mills. He seems like a matter of fact guy. Asked about his philosophy (small ball vs. wait for HR), he says he hopes he can’t be pegged with a particular philosophy. He said it will depend on whatever helps score the most runs, given the particular line up each day. It might depend on things like how the wind is blowing. He wants to do the most with the talents and skills of the players who are available. He said the Astros have a few players who can run playing today, they might allow them to run—-but we don’t want to make too many outs on the basepaths.

Manzells

Strained right quadricep

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 20, 2010 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

Quadricep is a series of muscles upper leg

Could be a strain or tear -Depending on severity , Tommy Manzella will be out 2 or 3 days or up to 6 to 10 weeks .

It didn’t look too severe as he left the field, but no official report yet on the severity.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 20, 2010 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

This is what I found (about strained quadriceps)

Grade 1

    * Some stretching with microtearing of muscle fibers.
    * Recovery can be complete in 10-21 days.

Grade 2

    * Partial tearing of muscle fibers.
    * Recovery can take up to 1-2 months.

Grade 3

    * Complete tearing (rupture) of muscle fibers.
    * Recovery can take more than 3 months.
    * Surgery may be needed to repair the torn muscle fibers.

I’m assuming it’s grade 1 or 2 because it didn’t look that painful. Hopefully just a mild strain and he can be back in there by opening day.

by OremLK on Mar 20, 2010 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Different research results

The info I found said 2 or 3 days for Grade 1 or 2 and 6-12 weeks for Grade 3.

2 or 3 days is big difference from 10 to 60 days

Let me try again

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 20, 2010 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions

here's one (yet another range of days)

How long does a quadricep injury take to heal ?

Torn ligaments and tendons require as long to heal as fractured bones do.
The average healing times are: (1) mild strain – 2 to 10 days, (2) moderate strain – 10 days to 6 weeks, (3) severe strain – 6 to 10 weeks. The complications listed above are more likely to occur in the case of repeated injuries.

Astros fan for life

by Joe in Birmingham on Mar 20, 2010 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

So it could be anywhere from 2 days to 2 months based on this? I’d guess it’s not very severe, in any case… I bet he’ll be fully healthy opening day.

Hmm... maybe worse than we thought for Tommy
Mills called it “a pretty good strain.”

“I tweaked it, so it’s going to be a little bit sore, but other than that, I’m just going to kind of wait,” Manzella said. “I think tomorrow I’m going to be able to tell how sore it will actually be. But I just iced it a bunch, so it’s going to feel stiff from doing that. I’m just going to see if it loosens up tomorrow.”

Houston Chronicle report

Tommy Manzella is expected to miss at least a week..

The Astros expect to know more about Manzella’s condition on Sunday, but general manager Ed Wade said trainer Nate Lucero gave an early indication.

“Nate said we’re probably looking at a week to 10 days,” Wade said.

Manzella said he was not sure how much time he would miss.

" we’ll see how it goes day to day," Manzella said. “It didn’t feel like I got it too bad.”
