TCB Fantasy League Draft: Who Goes First?

We are five days away from the TCB Fantasy draft, so let's have an open thread to talk about where guys should be drafted. With a 16-team league, this is going to be one of the deeper drafts that I've hosted, so where should guys like Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman go?

For that matter, who goes in the first round? As a reminder, our point system does reward defense. Does that push Hanley Ramirez up to the top? Or is Albert Pujols still the unquestioned No. 1?

The other interesting thing about this league is that there are no rate stats. It's purely based on counting stats. Should that change the draft boards?

As a reference, here's the top 10 for our scoring system that was provided by CBSSports.com

This projection system doesn't include any of the fielding stats or HBP. As a comparison, here's the top 10 pitchers (while HBP and holds aren't projected).

We also need to come up with a good way to select draft position. I'm not averse to picking out of a hat, but if someone has a more creative idea, I'm all for it.

Oh, and here's a look at the divisions and team names so far. Some of the teams are still "Team 11," but we've got some creative entries so far.

Can't really argue with any of those guys...

maybe Adrian Gonzalez is too high. Josh Beckett to me isn’t a top 10 starter.

First base is incredibly deep this season.

Starting pitching is deeper every season than most people think.

Draft position

Is their not a randomizer on the site?

by timmy_ on Mar 17, 2010 1:34 PM CDT reply actions

i agree

should just be luck of the draw, in my opinion. i don’t know if cbs does it this way, but yahoo has a tool that randomly assigns the order. or just google “fantasy draft order generator” and you’ll find something

Hey, should we talk about our draft rankings before the draft? Doesn’t that take some of the strategy away?

I agree on the random draft order.

Juan Pierre because he’s gritty.

Does David Eckstein still play? cause I’d take him second because of his heart.

The incorporation of a few fielding stats into the point system does make me wonder how that will affect rankings. I have never played in a fantasy league with fielding stats. It’s an interesting and good idea. But I’m not sure how it will work out. The fielding stats seem like they could change your evaluation of when you select players at certain positions. For instance, some positions produce more errors as a matter of course, and outfield assists probably point you toward the corner outfield positions; middle infielders obviously will be involved in DPs. The relatively high points given to pitcher wins makes you think about the team context.

But since you have to start one player at each outfield position, no one will be able to stock up on right fielders for the assists. I am also interested to see how the fielding stats play into this. I’m sure they won’t have as much of an effect on the top of the draft, but the mid to low round players could see some hidden gems emerge.

I didn’t mean that you would pick more outfielders or shortstops, etc. I meant that It might affect when someone decides that they have to pick a shortstop or outfielder, etc. Not only would you need to factor in normal consideration of scarcity of hitters at particular positions, but the scarcity of good fielders who also hit well may change your decision. That’s all in theory, since I’m not sure if it will really affect how I draft.

Will it make a difference for a guy like Hanley Ramirez? He’s not the best fielder around but is an elite hitter at a scarce position. I don’t know that it’d stop me from taking him in the top 3 picks, but it’s something to think about for sure.

by David Coleman on Mar 17, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Hanley Ramirez? No, it probably doesn’t change my evaluation of him; I’m pretty high on him regardless. But it might make someone think he is more valuable than, say, Prince Fielder (who is rated No. 2 by the CBS experts).
