Trading Wandy
Let me start with the fact that I think Ed Wade made the safe and wise choice to deal Oswalt at the trading deadline. I'm not sure he got the best possible deal but after reading about how difficult it was going to be to deal Roy, I'm not too surprised at what Wade got in return. Yet now I can't help but look at the Rangers and the Yankees who are both desperate for an ace pitcher and wonder what they would have given up for Roy right about now after they both lost out on Cliff Lee.
We may not have Roy to sell off but we do have Wandy. He is a rent a player but the Rangers and Yankees, most off all, are worried about winning next year, and Wandy wouldn't handcuff a team in the future with a massive contract like Lee unless they choose to extend him. I would think his contract would make him appealing to the Rangers, and the Yankees are starting to sweat a bit as they watch Boston load up. I can't imagine they feel really good about signing Mark Prior. I'm sure there would be plenty of other teams interested in him as well. What kind of haul would you want for Wandy? I think we could use an upgrade at every single infield position. And if they can land a 3B or 1B, then the Astros could deal Wallace or Johnson for other parts. Who would you sign to replace Wandy? I don't think any of their minor leaguers are really ready to step in, so they would need to pick someone up.
I for one am ready to take some lumps if it means getting higher quality young players in return. So, I would be willing to take a chance and deal him now to get upside and a higher draft pick. I know many of you value those few extra wins, but I feel like this coming season is mostly lost, and 2012 isn't looking much better.

I’m not sure how much the Astros could get for Wandy, partly because I’m not sure how other teams feel about him. The Rangers might like him better than other teams, if I recall correctly that Nolan Ryan liked Wandy. (However, I would be a bit skeptical as to how Wandy might fare in the Rangers’ ballpark.) The thing is that Wandy falls into a lower tier on the list of possible pitching trade candidates (starting with Greineke and Garza and possibly including Billingsley, Zambrano, Buerhle, Josh Johnson). I would be concerned that the Yankees or Rangers would consider Wandy to be a fall back “cheap” option, and would expect that they don’t have to give up much.
If the Yankees traded for Wandy, I would want Montero, their top pick, but I doubt that they would give him up for Wandy. The Yankees don’t have much in the way of high level position player prospects after Montero. The Yankees do have some good pitching prospects. Unless the Astros get a big over pay, I would prefer to keep Wandy. Even if the Astros don’t sign him as a free agent next year, he still is likely to produce good draft choices when he leaves—which could be more valuable than the possible prospects that Wandy return right now.
If we traded Wandy, I’m undecided on what kind of return we’d get.
Positives:
-Not a lot of options right now on the FA market for above average starters, meaning there’d certainly be a market for him.
-He’s good and he’s left-handed.
Affordable-for now.
Negatives:
-Wandy isn’t exactly young. (He turns 32 next month.)
-Can be inconsistent at times and doesn’t seem to pitch all that well outside of Houston.
-In his last year of arbitration and not locked in to a long-term contract.
-Doesn’t really profile as a #1 starter.
Even with all the negatives, I’m sure the Astros could still end up with a decent return, but assuming they do, I’m concerned about who takes his spot in the rotation. We already seem stretched pretty thin at 5th starter, so I can’t imagine having to fill another rotation spot with what we have available. (Also, trading Wandy would pretty much make me think the Astros have given up on 2011 and are going for the #1 pick in the 2012 Amateur Draft.)
I would rather hold on to him and see where the team stands at the deadline. If they’re out of contention, any player with an expiring contract should be shopped, and Wandy would have by far the most value (over Quintero, Keppinger, Barmes, Hall, and Michaels).
Given that Wandy is lefthanded, good, a 2nd half pitcher, relatively inexpensive, and not past his prime, I would expect A LOT for him…a similar return to what we got for Oswalt.
Food for thought: Wandy vs Cliff Lee by the #s

Not saying Wandy is on Lee’s level, but it’s closer than you might think. Wandy has less mileage, a better strikeout rate, and comparable HR, Hit, and WHIP #s. He lacks Lee’s low BB #s, but how much is that worth, given that Wandy is so much cheaper. I would expect nothing less than what we got for Oswalt.

Trading Wandy, I would hope Fernando Abad seriously gets a look at a starter. But, I don’t think we should trade Wandy considering how bad our starting rotation could be without him. Lets wait until our minor league pitchers are ready for the big stage. But if it means that teams like Texas & New York would be willing to send us extra prospects because they are desperate, that may be better than having to wait in the future when we would get considerably less for Wandy. But I see no reason in trading Wandy at this point since he would be extremely valuable to us.
"I want my life back". "I'm sure you do Tony Hayward, but I like marshland & fish. You'll never be able to do anything it takes to "make this right". And don't even think about giving me marlins.
wandy
r u crazy… you dont trade pitching….wandy is a proven starter…dominant a lot of the time….if he had had an offense the lst part of last yr he would have been 15-7 magnus
