There are a lot of people speculating that Mark Cuban will buy the Astros and they are overly excited about the possibility of having a "win at all cost" owner. I share that dream for a Houston sports franchise; But, I see no way that Mr. Cuban will show any interest in purchasing the Astros.
I need you to think with your head and not your heart for a few seconds. There are a lot of positives to Mr. Cuban buying the Astros. Mainly he would make money and we would have a solid team with a chance to win each year if he holds true to form. Here’s the problem. Cuban would have a conflict of interest. We should all be aware that the Astros and Rockets have agreed to join together in a new cable channel expected to start in 2012. Mr. Cuban owns the Mavericks….the competition! It would be very difficult for him to justify financial gain from two NBA franchises. One he owns and one he’s a partner with. This puts him, in my mind, out of the conversation. The only way it could work if for him to sell the Mavericks……or buy the Rockets AND Astros….huuummm?????.......can we trade franchises??? I know that’s silly. But I think this is why he is saying he’s not interested. He is…but his situation won’t allow him to take action.
Let’s hope that whoever buys the Astros has some billionaire friends who like good baseball played in a beautiful ball park and who don’t mind writing big checks.
I think the new channel is a great thing for Houston sports; but it may have just cost us a shot at having the next "Steinbrenner".
